Wow, that is a complicated watch, not for the faint of heart when repairing.

Did you do a video on how you modified the winders?
@csspinner5 сағат бұрын
I didn’t. All I did was drill them out though to make the holes large enough to use any of the arbors in the set
@brianwohlleben31824 сағат бұрын
@@csspinner Okay. Thanks. Did you have to mod the arbors? I know some have complained about the hooks not being that good.
@csspinner4 сағат бұрын
@@brianwohlleben3182 I found if I use a big enough arbor the hook works. The issue is using a smaller arbor the spring doesn’t find it easily

I am a little late to comment on your post but I just discovered, and subscribed to, your channel. I see that you decided to continue the narration. I think your clear descriptions are of great value to anyone watching who may not be familiar with certain watches and movements. I agree with your comment about hand winding the mainspring. Once you get beyond the standard set of winders there are a myriad of different size barrels and having winder for each would become very expensive. As long as you are careful, as you were, and do not kink the spring, the only difference between hand winding and a tool is convenience. Finally your mention of Henry Fried’s book brought back memories. My father and Henry were good friends and both belonged to the New York Horological association. Henry lived nearby and I knew him before I knew what he was. Later I got into the watch business and had many meetings and discussions with Dad and Mr. Fried. Bottom line, Henry was a very nice man and very helpful with information. Keep up the good work.

Love the narration, the history talk... I am looking at local ads and there is the same watch for sale, somewhat better condition then yours was. This is one is supposedly running and alarm is working. What's a good price for it?

Has anyone noticed how the watch case is made to look like those ana digi watches from 70s and 80s

See what you do is take all the parts that couldn't be saved and build a little stand for the watch to be displayed on. Be it hung or be it a base you lay the watch on when you take the watch off the stand you see the parts that had to be replaced encased in resin arranged to where they would have been found inside the watch. While the house fire is a terrible experience it's still very much apart of the history of the watch that would be handed to each generation. You don't have all the time in the world so make the most out of the time you have be then good or bad times.

Magnificent documentary! Beautiful videography, lighting. Even your carefully chosen music works nicely, meditative and never distracting. What a 20-minute education, especially with the part names in URH corner! How exciting to restore a castaway antique to like new. I love watching a real pro at work, to see how it's all done. Thank you for making this!

Hi Chris, another great video, and thanks for the heads up on White watch crystals. I had been buying them in bulk, and that "buy 20 to (maybe) get one" gets old quickly. Also useful was the one vs. three dial washer issue. I have my grandfather's Longines pocket watch, and the hour hand is a bit wonky. Maybe a second (or third) dial washer will fix the problem.

AMAZING to say the least. You know when your watching a movie and you et all tensed up? Watching you make those parts, fitting them and then putting the chain back on I'm like at the edge of my damn chair. I've always loved watch's, Seiko being my favorites. But seeing you, and others on yt has really opened my eyes to a whole other world, and I find it absolutely fascinating. If I have to get up for any reason, I make sure I pause it so I don't miss anything. Thank you for showing us a whole new world.

I too watched to the end. I am delighted by the "Gold" etching in the bridges, which is really pretty and tells of the quality. There is a certain elegance with the enumeration of the faces that use the "Dido" style font. Beautiful restoration and lathe work. Thanks for sharing.

You said at 55:10 you needed to set the movement to 12:00 before putting the hands on, how did you do that? Do you have to do that with the dial off so you can see where the sensing gauges are?
@csspinner8 күн бұрын
That’s one way to do it, but visual approximation like that can still cause one to be off by several minutes. Instead, I got as close as possible then triggered the repeater every 30 seconds or so around what I thought was 12 until I heard the transition from 11hr 3qtrs to 12hr 0qtrs. At that point I mounted the hands aligned to 12

The balance spring probably dissolved not just because of the amount of rust but also because of an adverse reaction between certain spung steels and certain cleaning products. ScoutCrafter did a vid about this recently.
