if you file down the front site it will have the opposite effect and group even higher. thats actually better than most of the cap&ball revolvers ive had that hit really high. try replacing the nipples with one of the improved designs. the nipples that come on those replicas have a much larger hole than the historical examples ive seen. the cap should be quite tight requiring a bit of pressure to seat it. also try deburing and polishing the hammer face right where it hits the caps. the purpose being that the rough edges of the hammer dont pull the deformed cap off the nipple into the action. the spent cap should stay on the nipple until the next shot blows it off when its to the side and has room to drop free without gumming up the works. damn good shooting!

Blackpowder is VERY durable. If powder didn't get wet and the caps didn't get soaked in oil, it WILL go off a hundred years from when you loaded it. There are muzzleloaders found in the attic, loaded decades before, that went off no problem (sometimes accidentally as the finder thought they were not loaded... ) During WW II the french actually used leftover barrels of XIX century black powder to make improvised mines...

I actually have two. One is a very old replica with a 6" barrel of all things and at ten yards it will take out a beer can pretty easily. The other is an Uberti that is much nicer looking with a 4" barrel and a bit harder to shoot accurately. One tip that makes these guns very cheap to shoot is that #00 buckshot is exactly the right size for a ball for the gun. a 4 pound bag is a lifetime supply lol. On all my replica revolvers I first nickel plate everything that is not color case hardened and ream the cylinders to bore size if needed. Then I stiffen the hammer spring which really helps with cap jams.

I bought a 1849 (02-20-24) and was pleasantly surprised that I only had to do the basic things you have to do to any BP revolver. It makes up for all the work and new parts I had to do to the 1862 Pocket Navy to get it to even function. Now I have all the colt cap&ball Colts revolvers ever produced except the baby Dragoon that I consider in the 1849 category and may not buy one.

So the true answer to your question is yes you can file down your rear sight, though limited as to how much. I was going to do that but I found those conversion kits aren’t designed for regular rounds. 850fps is the max recommended. So the cap and ball give as good or better ballistics. Except for the .22, that one is still a consideration.

What size roundball are You shooting? Generally speaking, .321" soft lead roundball are recommended for ".31 Cap-and-Ball" revolvers; they provide a very tight fit in the chambers, and should give better accuracy and velocity. I'm pretty sure that LEE makes a .321" RB Mould. Although I haven't shot my Colt 1849 .31, I put many miles on a Lyman "Remington NMA .44" that I bought in the nearly 80s. These C&B Revolvers are surprisingly accurate and powerful!

Yeah they surprisingly are capable of fantastic accuracy. I’ve been using 00 buck shot (.330) with 15gr of 4f averaging 950fps, and can keep them in a dip can sized area at 15yrd. Forget the cap shaking technique, use a piece of hacksaw blade as a helper spring underneath the hammer spring (mainspring) and get some SlixShot nipples and never have reliability issues again. Just make sure to polish the side of the “helper spring” in contact with the bottom of the mainspring so it doesn’t scratch or etch and might potentially cause breakage.

@@OverOnTheWildSide I just opened up the mounting hole on one end of the hacksaw blade so the mainspring screw fits through, then put the mainspring on top and scratched layout lines, then gently ground each side to the shape of the mainspring. It goes up to about 1/4” from the top. Adds about half to the tension so the caps don’t blow back and fall into the action. Since it’s not seen it doesn’t have to be pretty lol. I’d make sure to polish the side that’s against the mainspring so it doesn’t scratch or score.

But I heard they used to glue the caps on with a mild glue back in the day. If you can only fire 5 rounds without reloading why not . The caps would stay on then. Just for your fyi. I like the size of that revolver. I have two 1851 Navies in 36 caliber and they are a little difficult to carry. Plus, double-ought buckshot is .32 caliber. When I am loading shotshells the 36 caliber balls do not fit well in a shell, compared to 32 caliber balls. They sit in groups of three in a 12 gauge shell. So, the 32 pistol and then shotgun combo would be nice.

@@OverOnTheWildSide wish I would have known that before going for 36 caliber. I make my own black powder and have been experimenting with shooting slugs and pumpkin balls with my 12 gauge with it. I bought those Lee molds and melt the lead over a propane burner. I have done it on a campfire. Anyway, my large projectiles are not very accurate, so I'm thinking buckshot would be best for hunting deer in brushy areas: riparian areas are my favorite anyway. So, it would be nice to be a .32...sorry I realize it is .31 now...duh...would be nice to be a 31/shotgun "person".....anyway cool pistol you got there. you can play around with it a bit to increase the reliability. one thing i would recommend is not to slowly pull the hammer back like a modern target revolver. it was actually designed with a quick rotation in mind to throw the spent cap so using a deliberate and brisk cocking motion will help your reliability a lot. another thing that helps is while cocking to point it in the air with a slight angle to the right if safe to do so. you can also polish the face of your hammer and file a very shallow and slight "v" groove on the face of each nipple to direct the gases. this guy blackie does a good tutorial kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7uXjZh9vtTXk4E.html

If you file that front sight down you're going to shoot even higher. As for the round balls moving forward even after you cut a ring of lead, make sure your chambers don't have an imperceivable burr. Load all of the cylinders (you can do this without powder and then knock them out after, or load it with the intent to shoot) and then when the round balls are seated, make a snap with your wrist several times hard like you're cracking a whip. The round balls shouldn't move. If they do, and you cut a ring of lead, then you've got a burr (from the machining process) that's overhanging the chamber mouth and even though you can't see it, it's microscopically making the round ball undersized for the inner walls of the chamber. Essentially, the overhanging burr cuts off a little excess lead and once the round ball gets past the burr and into the cylinder itself, it now has a little bit of wiggle room. You'll need to knock that burr down very carefully with a drill press and an oiled dremel grinding stone. It'll only take a fraction of a second on low speed to do this. Mark the offending chambers so you don't do the other ones unnecessarily. I had issues with Pietta before, but not Uberti.
@OverOnTheWildSide
@OverOnTheWildSide Жыл бұрын
That’s very interesting, I don’t know that the balls are slipping forward it was just something I dealt with on my muzzleloader rifle so I was being cautious. I’ll keep an eye out and see if they do. As far as filing the sight, that was just a dumb mistake. My brain wasn’t functioning properly and I made a couple mistakes like that. Lots to think about I guess haha

Don't file the sight, your front sight needs to follow the bullets to adjust properly. I am glad you are getting good use of the property, my dad and mom owned it and my mom is the one who sold it to you. Have you found the snake den yet?

@@OverOnTheWildSide yes, well kinda a general vicinity. Where the house is go across the creek and just over half way up the hill towards the landing with the gravel pit is. It is right on the edge of the bigger rocks. In the fall all the baby snakes would be congregated in that spot along with a few adults.

@@OverOnTheWildSide yeah, I think so. It has been almost 15 years since I have been up there. Life just gets busy. But there was 100% a den on that hill side. I have killed a lot of snakes up there.

Yeah my brain was off that day. I was also calling it a .32 (or I did in the title at least) but thanks, that would have sucked if I’d actually done it haha.

Don't file the front site! That will just raise the pattern. Your aim should put the bottom of the spot just on top of the front sight. The top of the front should be centered in the hammer notch and even with the top of the hammer notch.

Oh, forgot. After you fire a shot, as you cock the hammer be vigorous, or raise your arm a'la Andy Devine as some of the old western movie cowboys did. It wasn't just for show. It was a carry over from the days of cap and ball revolvers. Helped prevent cap jams.

Yeah, that was a mistake, saying that I would file it down. My brain wasn’t working very fast that day, I made a few mistakes. For instance, I also called it a 32 caliber.

I’m going to assume that’s a typo and you wrote “dapper”. Mine is a used Resistol fur felt hat that I reshaped. I find hats often available on Marketplace, good quality hats come up for 50-$80 quite a bit.

Slick shot Nipples will stop a lot of that cap suck business. I put em on my Wells Fargo and not one cap jam since doing so. Uberti recommends .033 round balls which happens to be exactly what a .00 buckshot ball is. The Lee .00 buckshot mold makes the perfect size. I cast about 400 of them juts for that gun. Cheap ammo. Regular buckshot won’t work well as it has antimony in it and too hard.
