Nice job on explaining the carb and how it functions with boost (power valves). Way back when,I started out with thermo quad carbs. Everything took off from there. Amazing how bits and pieces of different designs have been engineered to fit together over the years. Pretty much the same for most components.

Your discussion on Carburetors was spot on. Too many time no one will touch one because they don’t understand them. I’m one of the few in my area that can repair and rebuild most carburetors but I get paid well to do them.

I run Q16 in a 400HP Yamaha sidewinder, it did pick up a hundred rpm and had to clutch accordingly over C16. Great video 👍

The biggest problem of that A/A intercooler was the size. To compare different style of cooling, at least the pipe diameter should be the same. On a high volume (+5l) engines, pipe diameter is crucial to keep the air flow cold and steady.

Yeah me and my dad had a 871 blower on a true 350 and we had to quad keyed the crank and we still spun the pulley after a few hard street drives the tech has changed so much in 15 years

On the Carb. I built alot of Q-Jets when I was younger. I noticed GM used the same jetting alot of times between te BBCand SBC. It took awhile to figure that one out especially when I found out that my 500 Cadillac had the smallest jets GM made. Of course 3500 RPM was it on a stock one

Have not seen the modified air / fuel metering, including four floats, for a Holley, (you referred to the carb. by another name, did not catch the name), very interesting video. Thank you. Personally seeing where car owners are moving towards cold flowing *alcohol* with additives, and / or some sort of cold-air-flowing - modified fuel, running no external air cooler. The 90 degree restrictive elbows / turns, within the pushed air flow path, makes so much logical sense, *thanks again* .

love me some Q16. it'll take ur breath away if you get a wiff of it on a hot summer day. oxygenated fuel, 🤪 always ran Q16 in my naturally aspirated BBC because it made more power on the dyno and was trying to get everything we could out of it. Was truck pulling in a class that had to be all cast iron heads and intake.

I had a 1980 Ford Mustang with the 2.3 l draw through turbo charger setup. I took the original 230 CFM carburetor off of it and put on a Holley 2 Barrel 500 CFM carburetor. Reported the intake manifold, they hadn't, I had a 1.75 inch exhaust manifold with a custom two and a half inch exhaust that ran up to the turbocharger, and he's 3 in exhaust from the turbocharger back to behind the car. It was the stock block with the forge flat top pistons running 9 to 1 compression ratio. On pump gas at 10 lb of boost it dynoed at 230 horsepower to the wheels. With the Boost unregulated, I could run 110 Octane leaded gasoline between 18 and 22 lb of boost is what it got but I never got a chance to put it on the chassis dyno it at that level but it was certainly faster! That was the draw through, or wet turbocharger. It made some really cool noises at Full Throttle and between gears off the throttle you could actually hear this turbocharger speeding up with a little spanking boost when you'd first hit the throttle.

I would have found it to be more useful to see like for like pulls with water to air and air to air. It's kind of a no brainer that an undersized intercooler of any type would perform poorly. Perhaps you could do that comparison sometime in the future.

Also interested to see the pressurised carb' setup. Back in the late 80's I bought an old (even then) Kawasaki Z1R Turbo with a pressurised carb and pressurised pre turbo water injection. The carb worked because the float bowl was pressurised by a feed from the inlet. Meaning that its internal pressure and float bowl pressure is near enough the same, leaving the carb to work as normal. The water injection tank was also pressurised from the inlet and fed the turbo intake via a jet with a spring valved jet set to open when the water, and boost pressure reached about 9 psi. I had a lot of fun with it, but that basic Bendix carb did not work well at low boost and it would fowl plugs and run like a dog. But on boost it could really clear it's throat and scare the cr?p out of me as it had way more power than chassis or brakes. The water injection worked as the one time I blew a hole in a piston (yes #2 always #2!) I discovered the water tank was empty.... Just remembering what a beast it was has me smiling now.

That is one honkin' sbc. 💪

Anyone looking for or wanting more power than 2k through a blow through carb deserves associated issues. Talking like prior 1900’s technology evolved into the 21st century and it can support up to that much Hp. Your nuts! Very impressive capabilities of antique dinosaur technology. I’m only making like 650 hp with a blow through sbm, and I’m impressed with that lol. Never could imagine this kind of power with a carb…

Was going to ask about the air to air run numbers but I see in the comments the answer. A FYI a 90* bend has the same restriction as 160' of straight run. So your set up of 6 elbows is the same as adding 960' of additional piping. So elimination of the elbows alone would help that set up but 250HO difference is a lot.

Besides protecting the intercooler. Is it beneficial to blow off prior to the intercooler. I assume if there is less air mass going thru the intercooler than the deltaT can be faster? Have you see any numbers on this. They can be faster temp transfer on higher pressure gas/liquid.

I got my hands on a nice Barry grant carb. Its too big for my engine right now. but I cant wait till I can build by 445 olds

I'm slowly buying parts to build a 406sbc. I currently have, brand new AFR 210cc Competition Ported cylinder heads, Eagle 4340 crank, Eagle 4340 6 inch H beam rods with L19 rod bolts. Probably going do use a Dart SHP block. Could you recommend a good cam, intake, and carb? I want around 10.5:1 compression pumps gas 93 octane engine. It will be a street strip bracket raced car. Probably be 3000lb with a 4.10-4.56 rearend gear, glide or turbo transmission. I want to at least make 600 horsepower at the flywheel. Just need a good recommendation to go well with my cylinder heads. Heads are setup for solid lift roller camshaft up to .710 lift. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I’ve always thought a blow through and the expanding air and atomization of fuel cooled the air down tremendously. Well that’s what David Freiburger said about his salt bed race car. Also on the air to water IC how does it keep from Making a bunch of condensate? I guess it just blows the water on through tho before it puddles up

That TINY A/A intercooler looks more like some OEM Factory POS than a high performance aftermarket item!

Interested in some general head specs. Mfg, 18° or 23° we have a 23° 434 nitrous motor that would be nice to shorten the stroke up in and throw some boost at it.
