Some more quality time with this original Civil War rifle. Very cool! We meant to speed up the reloading late in the video, as we did in an earlier video. We just forgot. Anyway, that's the reason for my comments about "speed reloading" and why I did not speak during reloading late in the video. I didn't expect you to be able to hear anything I'd say anyway. :-)

I went to the museum in Springfield mass where they made those. They have hundreds of them stacked in racks that were ready to ship out at the end of the war and they kept them I guess. They all look like they were made yesterday, it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen! You're a lucky man to have one in that shape.

Civil War era rifles are my new niche. I have over 130 rifles and pistols of different types and as of late, I've grown an interest into single shot rifles. I appriciate each shot more. My recent purchases were a Browning B-78, Ruger No 1 and a Remington rolling block. Still want a trapdoor Springfield and a Sharps. Most of my firearms are military collectibles. There's just something about them. Like the nostalgia and feel of an older car.

BilgePump...Thanks. Gun collecting is my vice. It's an expensive hobby. My wife hates that I buy so many guns. The plus side is that they hardly ever lose value and I have something physical to show for my money. My love of guns comes from my Dad. He had a lot also, but I think a lot of my interest comes from my interest in history. My Dad loved history so my childhood vacations were spent going to civil war battlefields

Hey Hickock, I did some re-enacting in the late 80's and early 90's. Blanks are just as loud as live ammunition. They are much messier than live ammo. Having a projectile allows the power to burn "relatively" cleaner. So cleanup at the end of the day was very very very messy. Hot (boiling) water and a little dish soap usually did the trick. The safety rules forbade a number of things. No projectiles allowed on the field!!! not even a loose one in a pocket somewhere. They also asked us to not use the ramrod while in the field. If you got really busy, and left that in the barrel, it turns into a Javelin. Keep up the good work.

I've watched a half dozen or so of Hickock's black powder videos, but it just struck me how funny it is that modern black powder enthusiasts take so many precautions meanwhile the soldiers that used these in combat would fire round after round under combat stress. Makes you wonder whether all that precaution is worth it. Better to be on the safe side haha.

That original 1861 reminds me the day, in a gun shop in Texas I came upon a Navy Arms 1863 musket. The wood was super dark brown and bright stainless . Yours , at first glance looks like that rifle. The age and pitting says yours is real.

I use the small alcohol patches, that you can get at the pharmacy, that some folks use to swab an injection site. The alcohol cleans the bore, and evaporates very quickly, leaving a clean bore for a follow-up shot. That seems to work better than just a dry patch, or an oil soaked patch.

The CQ.combat in the american civil war era terrifies me, which is strange because my great grandfather fought the Italians with swords and lances on horseback. Just something about a bayonet and butt strike that terrifies me utterly.

I've had to extract a .45cal lead ball from my rifle. I made my own extractor tip out of a 2" metal wood screw. I cut off the screw head and ran a die (10-24) over it ........... then threaded it onto my ram rod and extracted the lead ball. Works GREAT!

For what it is worth, you might have mentioned that the barrels on the original guns are iron, not steel. Firing an original with 60 grains of powder might produce more of an explosion than you expected! If you intend to get involved with a 61 type Springfield, get a repro, and stay safe!
@hickok45
@hickok45 Жыл бұрын
Yep, they were iron back then firing 60 grains of black powder, just as they are iron today firing 60 grains of black powder. As with any antique firearm, you want to check it out and make sure it's safe to shoot, whether it's an 1st Generation Colt or an antique muzzleloader. If you intend to get involved with antique firearms, get them checked out, but as with many, many thousands of people who shoot antique arms, don't just out of fear or an unnecessary obsession with "safety," feel that you can only shoot reproductions. My shooting experience has been vastly enriched through the years by experiencing so many antique firearms., maybe because I've never known anybody who blew himself up, or have even heard of anybody who blew himself up. :-) That said, everybody else's mileage might vary. Always do what you think is safe and be sure you are aware of your limitations.

I've had to pull a ball twice. You are right, it is very difficult to do, but it is doable... Thankfully. It was a flintlock longrifle, 45 caliber with a 440 round ball and thick denim patch. TIGHT fit. I couldn't get enough powder in to do the trick. Tried compressed air too. No luck.

The bullet pullers work well. I've used them on 32, 45, 50, and 54 cals. The only time I had a problem was with a sabot. The plastic sabot stayed and the bulled pulled. I had to do the dry-ball trick with just a little powder.

I've shot all day like that, you don't soak the patch, just get it about as wet as a spit patch. It'll dry before you get your next powder measured. I learned this from years of shooting matches in WV with the Mountain State Muzzlelaoder Association. Spit patches get real old after shooting for hours, and dry patches get stuck too easy. I was taught you really never run a dry patch.

hickok45 what about a drop of balistol on the patches between shots? (That's what I do)
@shanek6582
@shanek6582 7 жыл бұрын
Spyder, you don't want to use any oil products on patches while shooting, it can accumulate and you'll get misfires. The point of using a patch that's slightly damp with either spit or a slight spritz with water with a SMALL amount of soap is it lubricates the patch enough so it won't get stuck, and it dries in seconds, especially if you've fired a few shots already. This was common knowledge where I'm from.
