This is a continuation of the 4s 40p battery build. I will be building 3 of these batteries for my portable powerpack. I also take some time to talk about my I got involved in building 18650 battery packs as I move forward to integrating Solar power.

Awesome channel buddy. Glad I found you cause you're one of the few that doesn't make jumping into the world of 18650 battery pack creation seem intimidating or inaccessible to someone without a lot of DC experience.

Nice build video. I'm also working with 4S packs and have them running on solar with a 120V power inverter. It's a nice intermediate step between 12V and 24V.

For all, about soldering on the cells - being heat is bad for these as the insulators inside the cells between plates is plastic, so take care when soldering. That being said, don't use a low power soldering iron. Yes that sound counter intuitive, but using a soldering gun of about 120 watt will heat the connection fast where the low power will heat the whole end and radiate deeper into the cell. So the soldering needs to be fast so heat can't radiate into the cells. It's the same principle as the spot welder being high fast heat to weld the contact resulting in fast cooling - no heat into the cell. I have always soldered to cells with no degradation to voltage or mah of the cell. And I do my packs just as Frank does here. Thanks Frank for your teaching of others..

Her Frank, Great videos. I am curious to get your take on the soldering vs spot welding question? I am just getting started processing cells and want to start with a portable power pack as well. My plan is to solder similar to what you are doing.

I have a friend who bought a spot welder and had a hard time getting it to work right. I wanted to use fuses on my cells I felt like using a spot welder for that was more trouble than it was worth. I have not had any issues with soldering. Thanks for watching. Frank

Thank you so much for this video! I'm in the process of gathering up all the goodies to build my own portable power bank, I'll be doing a 4s 30p pack. This will be very helpful in my build. I'm hoping to be able to run my trolling motor battery off of this pack. If I have to, I can build a another battery pack to go inside of this portable power pack, provided that there's enough room. Which I think there will be. I just hope I can provide the 55 amp draw that my trolling motor will need.

Just a quick note... Some of the cells struggle to take soLder because of the size of your iron tip.. Trick is to use as large a tip as you can on a hot setting, this improves the flow and adhesion of the soLder and lessons the time the iron needs to be on the cell which also avoids damaging the cell due to excessive heat being transfered with a smaller tip because you have to be on the cell way too long.... :)

My understanding is that the order is from “topmost” to “bottommost”, or the last connection made to the first connection made. So for example I’m making 8p packs, connecting those in 7s, and then connecting those in 3p - so I would call this 3p7s8p

Remember: Those who don't know the difference shouldn't be playing with electricity or high-power batteries. That's why we insist on proper terminology. I'm off-grid solar for 20 years as of this summer, on a 52 kWh battery set (giant 2 volt industrial lead-acid cells), and engineered my own system. Anyway, good on you for exploring alternatives. Good luck!

I also want to build a ev of some sort. I have. some forklift motors. I'd like a car or small truck. but may start with a bicycle. or scooter or motorcycle. but I don't want it to be slow. I can't stand to be passed . much less by everything. with a line of traffic behind. so I'd want at least a top speed of 70-80 mph. and 0-60 in 6 sec or less. I don't need Tesla speed. but yes I would like it. I'd probably build a car shed or motor cycle shed. with solar to charge it. with a wind turbine . with the ability to send the power to the house. 6-800 watts and a small batt bank for charging a ev . couldn't be that bad. and my house is off grid. I charge my batts with the generator for now. I hope to start solar in a few weeks. the generator needs a break. and I'm tired of hearing it! running a 6kw generator. to charge with 1000w or less . isn't exactly efficient. I'm also working on a DC generator. and will charge at 29v 150a. well that's enough rambling. all those cells in packs look great. I'm still charging and testing! I just about have my charging testing board finished. can't wait for the next video!!!
