Those old rifles just got that magic you don’t feel in a plastic and aluminum rifle. You are igniting my terrible addiction for old guns . I wish I could buy black powder here in Alaska, maybe it’s time I make a batch or get in contact with a muzzleloader group. This was nice to watch, gets me daydreaming about shooting.

Personally. I think your rate of fire was on par with someone using a Martini Henry, furthering my belief that the Trapdoor was the best “stop gap” musket conversion of the 19th century.

yeah BP would be better Im sure. Youd just need a wee bit of breeze otherwise it might mess with your time not being able to see the target for smoke. 🙂The smokeless loads out of the lyman book I have seem to have big flyer potential, well for me anyway. There were some really good shots in that string though

Not bad for rapid fire, mostly offhand at that distance. Tactically it would have been uncomfortable down there.

duplex loads, best of both worlds. My sharps doesn't like smokeless, hard to hit the broad side of a barn, I don't think the rifling twist agrees with the slower traveling loads. tack driver with BP. still, looks like you had fun. that's what it's about.

At what range was this? I'd bet the barrel was slightly above room temperatue... There was a battle between the Brittish heathens and the Zulus in South Africa once. The name slipped my mind. Might have been Izondluvu or some such. The Brits used Martini-Henry rifles. (.450/577. Basically a necked down .577 snider case. Very close to the 45/70. It used a .45 bullet of 450 grain with 70 grain of BP. Or there abouts) The battle went on so long, that the Martini Henreys got hot to the point where, after chaimbering a round, it would "cook off" in the barrel😮 I dont know the auto-ignition temperature of BP, but I think I am safe to assume the barrels were red hot, at the time.

Meh. Shooting timed events is always a bear. There is a very fine line between losing points for time and losing points on accuracy… and in my world you’re much better off being accurate than being fast. But - the CFC is still a great exercise and you did more than well enough!
