I personally use staghorn sumac wood as I can find it locally for free, and it suits all of my needs for lift in pyrotechnics. I would really like to see it stack up against other woods to see how well it actually does.

You stand the ladder up, when shooting at short ranges. The 100 yard position is at the very bottom. With the ladder down, the battle sight is set for a belt buckle hold, something like 360 yards or something like that.

I'm back, look down a couple comments and you'll see me a few months ago, what has changed from then to now is not a lot, but I'll pass it on anyway. I have been using cottonwood exclusively now, still have a lot of willow, both charred and raw dead stuff. The cottonwood is way cleaner in my 45-70, easier to clean and gives near 150 fps better velocity with the same charge. I'm still to cheap to purchase brass media, but I use poly coated bullets which are completely covered with poly and weigh 230 grains each. I mill my charcoal for 8 hours before mixing the ingredients so they incorporate better. 48 hours of milling 77-13-10 seems to work real well, then compressing, that is done over an hour or so per puck, I compress to where I can't go any more and leave it set while I do something else then go back and compress a few more pounds, as much as the jack will stand, then continue on with the day and pump the handle again, normally no more compression. Dry the pucks out for a few days in the hot sun or in the dehydrator. These pucks are rock hard and require a hammer to break so I can run them threw the grinder. GRINDER> the 2 I have are coated with tin, the latest is pretty thick coating, tin doesn't spark to my knowledge. Then just make into the proper grind and go to the range. I am getting 1375 fps avg pushing a 550 grain paper patched bullet with a lube wad between 2 cards under the slug, out of a 32 inch barrel Sharps reproduction. Well that's all I can think of for now, still a great video Jake

Nice find and it looks to be in great condition. If you notice any accuracy problems, slug the bore as you may need a slightly larger bullet. I have had good success with an old Rapine mould throwing a 0.460 405 gr bullet. The slower MV with the powder coated bullet is a mystery. Was the wadding set up the same in the other load?
@Everythingblackpowder
@Everythingblackpowder 12 сағат бұрын
Howdy Robert. The Lee mold drops at .460 and I ran them that way. The wads were not set up the same in both loads but I’m not sure if that’s why it slowed it down.

@@Everythingblackpowder Excellent. The wads are extra wt for the powder to push but it seems only a partial answer for the loss of over 100 fps. It seems everytime I test something bp related, I come up with more questions, lol.

AAHHHH I have always loved the .45 government rifles and carbines, Thank You for a great vid! If anyone hasn't pointed it out yet, the 1884 Sight I think is zero at 200 yards, this may help account for Your high shots. Also, You'r indicated velocities are a bit high, an 1877 Army document states 1100 FPS min to 1150 fps max. Maybe that also has a hand in the shot placement in this video?

I agree long term milling improves the quality of black powder. However, it's important to stir the powder to mix with the media periodically to make sure the powder is being milled and not just caked onto the milling chamber walls. The longer you mill, the faster the powder cakes, so you need to stir more often.

The springfield is a great rifle. I like the sharps cavalry carbine better tho. It has a stronger action. The springfield has excellent ejection. According to the government records, the carbine load was 55 grains of powder, with a wad, and a 405 grain hollow base bullet. The infantry load was 500 grain bullet with about 68 grains of powder. I like the cavalry load much better.

Just tried out some propellant with corn cobs as the carbon source. Milled, mixed and pucked as close to your method as possible. Shooting in a 50 CVA mountain rifle percussion fired. 50 Grains under a 490 round ball. My velocity started at 1064 fps and climbed 1340 on the 4th shot. Loading became increasingly difficult and was actually pounding on the ram rod to load the last two loads. When I patched it the patch was extremely dirty, so my next carbon will probably be Angel soft TP.

A lot of old artillery pieces were probably cast And there are a lot of things that can go wrong in the casting process that can lead to slightly weak areas in the metal. It is entirely plausible that premodern casting & alloys & QC techniques + random metal defect + poor loading technique could lead to problems you wouldn’t necessarily see in a modern piece. That might have a hammer-forged barrel with a purpose-engineered steel alloy and better ways of catching & correcting defects before they leave the shop.

Getting close to the original .45-70 load is not easy. In the era they had thin bottom casings (not yet brass - they were made out of copper). This is why they managed to squeeze 70 grains of powder under a 405gn bullet. Thick bottom was introduced later, with the advent of smokeless powder and military rifle pressures around 60000psi. And it became standard, even in calibers like .45-70. Today if one wants to be close to the original .45-70 loads, the .45-90 provides enough case capacity. Yet reaming an antique rifle for it would be sacrilegious. The only way out of this is powder compression - Buffalo Firearms offer some powder compression plugs, working with neck expansion die bodies.

There were two loadings for the trapdoor. The 55gr load for the carbine is authentic. A common prank was to slip a new recruit the 70 gr rifle load during carbine practice.

Powder coated bullets don't carry lube in the groves . With black powder the bullet collapses the grove , because it needs the lube to support the bullet . Powder coat will go down the barrel but the bullet is completely deformed .

Jake, what a well made video ! You are a very generous person to share so candidly what you found through so many hours of work, wow ... Thank you ! I have not yet fully explored myself everything you are talking about, but the few facets of black powder I have myself delved deeper into, I must admit I arrived at the same conclusions as yours. I am now quitting wheel weight tumbling media and will try a "more brassy" media instead. By the way I tried a couple different versions of the CIA method (available on the Net) and started getting really interesting results only once I was set up for tumbling and compressing. Sometimes I wonder if I had compressed after the CIA method if the results would have been as good as tumbling and compressing ... may be another time. Again thank's and keep on your most excellent work !

Generally, powder coating is best for situations where a jacketed bullet is preferred - high pressure smokeless loads. IIRC it originally came about as a way to prevent leading in magnum smokeless pistol rounds, and it even enables loading cast bullets at pressures that will cycle an AR in .223 Remington. I'm not sure it really gives any advantage in black powder, and in fact I suspect it's kind of pointless. Especially since you need the lube to keep the fouling soft, and the only other argument for powder coating is that it prevents you from having to use messy lube on smokeless cast rounds.

Jake, would you consider some experimentation on what Shermin Bell was doing regarding using smokeless as a BP replacement in BP only revolvers? I read and understand that as long as the powder is slower than 2400 and the right amount is used and NOT Double charged it can be done safely and with less pressure peak than BP. I've ready 2400, RL7 and a few others would work fine for this. I've looked for weeks for more Shermin Bell research but can't seem to find any more other than what I've found already but its kinda vague.
