In time, Kruger emerged as a leader. He started as a field cornet in the commandos, eventually becoming Commandant-General of the South African Republic. He was appointed member of a commission of the Volksraad, the republican parliament that was to draw up a constitution. People began to take notice of the young man and he played a prominent part in ending the quarrel between the Transvaal leader, Stephanus Schoeman, and M.W. Pretorius.
In 1873, Kruger resigned as Commandant-General, and for a time he held no office and retired to his farm, Boekenhoutfontein. However, in 1874 he was elected to the Executive Council and shortly after that became Vice-President of the Transvaal.
Following the annexation of the Transvaal by Britain in 1877, Kruger became the leader of the resistance movement. During the same year, he visited Britain for the first time as leader of a deputation. In 1878, he was part of a second deputation. A highlight of his visit to Europe was when he ascended in a hot air balloon and saw Paris from the air.
The First Boer War, also known as the "First War of Independence", started in 1880, and the British forces were defeated in the decisive battle at Majuba in 1881. Once again, Kruger played an important role in the negotiations with the British, which led to the restoration of the Transvaal's independence under British suzerainty.
On 30 December 1880, at the age of 55, Kruger was elected President of the Transvaal. One of his first aims was the revision of the Pretoria Convention of 1881, the agreement between the Boers and the British that ended the First Boer War. Therefore, he again left for Britain in 1883, empowered to negotiate with Lord Derby. Kruger and his companions also visited the Continent and this visit became a triumph in countries such as Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Spain. In Germany, he attended an imperial banquet at which he was presented to the Emperor, Wilhelm I, and spoke at length with Bismarck.
In the Transvaal, things changed rapidly after the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand. This momentous discovery was to have far-reaching political repercussions and to give rise to the uitlander, or foreigner, problem, which was eventually to cause the fall of the Republic. Kruger acknowledged in his memiors that General Joubert predicted the events that were to follow afterwards, declaring that instead of rejoicing for the discovery of gold, they should be weeping because it will "cause our land to be soaked in blood."
At the end of 1895, the failed Jameson raid took place; Jameson was forced to surrender, taken to Pretoria and handed over to his British countrymen for punishment.
Kruger believed that the Earth is flat; in 1897 he said to a sailor sailing round the world "You don't mean round the world, it is impossible! You mean in the world. Impossible!"[1].
In 1898, Kruger was elected President for the fourth and last time.
On 11 October 1899, the Second Boer War broke out. On 7 May the following year, Kruger attended the last session of the Volksraad, and left Pretoria on 29 May as Lord Roberts was advancing on the town. For weeks he either stayed in a house at Waterval Onder or in his railway carriage at Machadodorp in the then Eastern Transvaal, now Mpumalanga. In October, he left South Africa on the Dutch warship De Gelderland, sent by the Queen of the Netherlands Wilhelmina, which had simply ignored the British naval blockade of South Africa. His wife was too ill to travel and remained in South Africa; she died on 20 July 1901.
Kruger went to Marseille and stayed for a while in The Netherlands, before moving to Clarens, Switzerland, where he died on 14 July 1904. He was buried on 16 December 1904 in the Church Street cemetery, Pretoria.

@@goodafy You are getting a Phd in Woke African history. I met my Grandfather whom fought in the Boer War before he passed. The only Blacks were the auxilary folk which bears out the fact they were not armed thus were horse handlers and camp attendents. Not once did he mention that the Blacks stood back to back with the Boer fighting the English. This was a Whiteman's War. Please read as many 'Old' publications on the Boer War as the current information follows the Woke trend to give the World the impression that Africans played a bigger role in World affairs than they did. A good example of this is the way the BBC is now spreading the word that the UK always been a multi Cultural Society but all old movie footage is ripping that theory to shreds, even causing a backlash. View the KZfaq channel History Debunked by Simon Webb and see the English reply to their own BBC's programs. Before you know it the 'Redtails' will have saved Britain during the Battle of Britain! it was actually the English who introduced Apartheid in 1904. DF Malan intensified it after1948. It was also the English who massacred 1000's of Zulus and Xhosas during the Frontier wars. And what the British did to the Afrikaners was unspeakable. So go read a book or something and piss off with your so called benevolent British ideals.

One of the foremost reasons behind the second Boer war was the exploitation of the native and indigenous people by the Boer republics (and the removal of the Uitlanders). The British public disagreed almost unanimously with the use of concentration camps but believed that the liberation of the state from the Boer leadership was justifiable. Both the British and the Afrikaners are responsible for the Apartheid system but it is incorrect to claim that the involvement of British influence in the formation of South Africa is wholly responsible for the exploitation of the indigenous people and negates the large Afrikaner presence in Apartheid politics.

Not possible under modern political conditions as the Dutch separatist Boers separated from Holland for the same reasons the Puritans fled England. IE they were non conformist reformationalists. IE they opposed Dutch Crown and Dutch parliamentary pro Crown Ministers and supporters. So a return to the Dutch Union could only be as a result of Boers accepting the Dutch constitution. They can only do that if they disown their separatist ideology.
@johann.9271
@johann.9271 4 жыл бұрын
@@MikeGreenwood51 Where do you get your info? Boers were not separatists in the sense that they wanted isolation from the world, they just wanted freedom from the British. The only reason Boers and modern Europeans are not closer together is because the Anglo-American alliance destroyed the Europe we recognised in two world wars and then replaced it with spineless puppets. Give us a Wilhelmina, a Wilhelm, a Bismarck, a Nicholas or a Leopold, and that would be Europecagain.

@@johann.9271 No I did not say they wanted isolation from the world. They wanted isolation from other Dutch people who did not share their same religious views. So it was not isolation from the world. The Puritans likewise did not want isolation from the world. but other's in power wanted them isolated. Prevented from teaching or being in positions when they could infect their own like minded reformationalists.

@Paul Frost Correct. Also note the BRITISH Cape Colony's 1776 land act and the practice of ringing bells in the BRITISH Cape and BRITISH Natal Colonies to shove non-whites out of town after dark. Cecil John Rhodes, the arch-imperialist was a super-racist, so was Alfred Milner (the actual architect of modern Apartheid). BRITISH Natal Colony under Shepstone created laws to prevent blacks from voting. Cecil John Rhodes introduced Apartheid in sport in 1849. When the Afrikaner came to power in 1948 it was suddenly frowned upon but never under British rule. Alfred Milner said: "One day the Boer will take control of the entire South Africa, but that will ironically lead to his final downfall". So it is no coincidence that the anglo-saxons project Apartheid as a pure Boer/Afrikaner invention.

Let us be a little clearer with the facts. the British were bankrupted and enslaved by the ZioNazis well before the Boer wars... It was the Joowish money that saw the slaughter of Boer women and children and the Joowz were holding all the minerals when the dead boers were being buried...just follow the money, Joowz profit from war and the financially consolidate everything... It is inexplicable to me that this repellent, gutless racist should be held up as a hero even today - even by the Afrikaaners, let alone anyone else. They never mention his bigoted policies and the massacres committed against the black natives, whom even the British treated better. Kruger exhorted his people to resistance to the death against the British invaders in the 1899-1902 Who Gets To Control The Gold That Doesn't Truly Belong To Either Of Us War, then when the war inevitably swung England's way, what did this 'brave statesman' do? He packed half the Transvaal's treasury into crates and ran away to Paris like the coward he always was, leaving his people in the lurch to suffer slow defeat by starvation and military force. What makes his story all the more disgusting is that people today argue over who was in the right in the Boer War, the rebels or the British. How about NEITHER OF THEM? The land did not belong to the British, it did not belong to the Boers, it was *stolen off the black natives*, who were treated like total s**t by the white invaders. Yes, let's all weep about the Boers in British concentration camps, and completely forget about the death toll of the black inhabitants, which was many many times higher than that of the white imperialists. Oh, and Kruger's beard looked f**king stupid, too.
