My dad had an 1887 that was thought to be lost in Katrina, it turns out my brother in law had gotten it a few days after the storm and had his father hold it. I just got it back yesterday and I could not be happier. Now to find someone to restore it. It's one of the only things I have of my dad, I'm so excited. I also got his S.S. Northcote double barrel side-by-sie

He wanted to go with a pump design but Winchester insisted on a lever as they were known for lever action rifles. Browning released his own pump action shortly after.

@@danstevens2204 not shortly after, winchester bought the pump design also and shelved it until they saw the 1887 wasn’t selling well anymore. That’s when they put the model 1897 into production. But JMB actually designed it before the 1887. I have to check the exact year in my book.

Mark I feel for you. I just purchased a 1917 Model 12 Winchester. It looked good outside, but had a very sluggish action. Once apart I found it looked like this 1887. The owner just shot it and never went down the rabbit hole and do the maintenance. But thanks to your years of coaching and information, it's now a functioning Senior Shotgun!

I bought a very rusty brown 1890 flobert cyclist pistol and took it apart. Degreased it, then boiled it for 45 minutes and brushed it very gently with some steelwool (first soaked in alcohol) then i soaked it in petroleum. (Heater fuell) and wow what an awesome result. Underneath the rust was nickleplating and the moving parts like hammer, trigger and extractor were black. Now it looks nice and is functional. It' s only a real challenge to hit something, it's tiny. I learned that from this channel. You are a great teacher Mark. :))

Thank you for what you do. You motivated me to replace the stock on a Winchester Model 1890 22 short pump action rifle my Mom's Dad had that he used to shoot squirrels out of his peach trees in Washington D.C. back in the 40 and 50s. There was a bit of mung on and in the rifle but I very carefully clean it without removing any of the patina on the metal. Very slight difference between the foreend and the stock but I am happy with it. Rifle shoots pretty well with 22 shorts.

Thank you again for emphasizing not to throw out the bag until the job is finished because small parts can be caught in the folds. I've had many arguments with people who have thrown out boxes w/ packing material from /new/ parts orders *after* screaming they didn't find everything they expected. [Distributor] and [Mfg.s] maliciously sent us "complementary" replacement orders knowing that the customs duties/taxes would cost us thousands of dollars for the *dozens* of repeat orders those "people" placed every week; Irrespective of /if/ I'd handed them the heaps of parts their boxes *that* I had to pull out of (and around) the overflowing dumpster to make room, and found literal heaps of parts that fell out once I'd "cleaned" them out. (Even more infuriating was that we'd had compatible "generic" parts on the shelf but they'd wanted to use the "actual" parts from the companies that made the datasheets they found by Googling the internet; and not our internal library incl. parts from those same companies by type...)

Thank you so much for your knowledge and videos. I'm just a hobbyist and I perform refinishing via cerekote and sandblasting and rebuild stock sets and perform basic gunsmithing for folks. I've restored close to 30 guns in the past 3 or 4 years. You have taught me so much about conservation and I love it. I truly truly appreciate all your knowledge you share with us. My friends father was a gunsmith for 50 years and he taught us quite a bit about the trade but he's passed now and I lost my mentor until I found your channel. I guess I'm just trying to say I'm so grateful for your videos. Thank again :)

Getting the "Bag" is an expression we use at work. hehe.. Off subject, the music that you posted as being inspirational includes (Rush). Now, stay with me. Rush was very innovational and many things can be centered around the artwork of each of the members. one, in particular, was Neal Pert, he unlike the others did not have a (Mind) melody to work with. he, however, was a percussionist and understood the mathematical navigation to a rhythm. I saw him in an interview back in the '80s talking about the exercise challenge of not just being like any other "Drummer" So,, he broke down a classic Piano script, scraping off the frosting and getting to what the cake was made of. he applied those Base notes, crescendos, tenor, alto and pico to the mathematics of percussion and wrote exercises for him to practice. anyway, Much has been copied in Firearms, however, people that build on foundations of what they understand and apply it to being innovative and moving it out of the comfort zone are practicing a true art. That does not make us John Browning or Beethoven, however, in a way we can call it our own device. -Dave

I have a Model 1873 Winchester in 32/20 that I got like that too. I love it when I can find guns like that someone has had in a corner of a closet or under a bed and they sell it to me for hardly anything because of the way it looks. That Winchester turned out to be a gun that is mechanically perfect and still tight. And I have been very surprised at just how powerful that cartridge is and how accurate the gun is.

I owned a model 1901 Winchester Lever action 10 Gauge back in the 1970's.The Model1901 was similar to the 1887 but it had an articulated lever with a locking latch which locked the lever in the closed position, similar to a Winchester 1895 Lever Action Rifle. The 1901 was designed to handle 2-7/8" Smokeless Powder loads. I shot Remington 2-7/8"factory loads (which they still made back in the '70's) and Smokeless hand loads in the 1901. The 1887 was NOT designed for Smokeless powder, it was intended for Black Powder Only. It might be safe for light Smokeless loads if they are properly pressure tested. However, I would recommend just shooting Black Powder in the 1887, if it is in good condition, and enjoy it as it was intended to be used. Regards, Gungineer, Mike Piekarski

As a musician and firearms fellow I've used something called Music Nomad guitar polish on an old SKS stock that was looking pretty tired. Amazing stuff....this seems to be a cleaner / polish and then used their guitar wax. That's a Brazilian Carnauba wax and the results were outstanding and I have it on hand anyway. Price was not too bad...

Love the old 1887 Browning design Winchester as it is, not cut down like so many originals were for Cowboy Action Shoots. What makes it doubly painful is the fact that there was a modern reproduction of the 1887 that can handle modern loads without the need to alter these beauties'. Well done sir, well done.

Dad had one of those when i was a little fella he bought it for 25-30 $ got it home and went through it it has some issues with the lever and bolt and loader assemblies he tore it down and looked it over and dove deeper into the fireing assemblys and all that and yes like that one there it was packed full of rust unburned powder and dirt and munghe finally disassembled the full gun with exception of the barrel and loader tube. The wood was excellent with a few dings and slight scratchesnothing that took away from its looks the whole gun was a kind of orange brown colorafter tearing it down as far as possible he ran it through a steaming hot bath in a wash cabnet that only used super heated water and steam it turned out very nice all the original blueing shown so wonderfully and the wood he cleaned and steamed out the dings and the scratches about disappeared.all the parts cleaned up and exposed some ware problems that he had addressed by Otto Strenkert a pretty well known local gun smith and machine shop owner he restored and repaired the worn parts and reset the parts that were at their worse that would keep the gun from being a runner. Dad found some period correct ammo for it and burned off a few rounds cleaned it and sold it shortly after with documentation as to the restoration of worn and broken parts repaired by Otto.when it sold the fellow who bought it was the same fella who sold it to dad, i guess he was happier buying back his gun in its prettier state and paid 10x what he sold it for at his insistance. Dad let him have it back. Until i seen that one on your bench and in terminator movies and johnwayne movies return of the 66, i really didnt think id ever see another like it.

It's amazing how all that rust was hiding so much of the original blueing of that gun. Boil it, convert the red rust to black rust, and card off the loose stuff....and behold the beauty that was hiding from sight. Too bad this technique does not work for wrinkles.....boil my face, steel wool it a bit, and look 30 years younger. Don't think it will work...and not about to test it.
