R Stands for repeating action. recocked by hand to fire another round as no gas to gas system. Also for grenade launching as gas from ballistite cartridge goes straight down the barrel. An early version of FN FAL. Gas regulator on FN 49 set by armourer. FN FAL normally set at 6. But can be changed by firer. Set it to 0 when letting foreigners use it. Kicks like hell.Lol.

Mark, if you need a fine rust in a hurry, just strip a piece of metal with denatured alcohol set it on your bench and just watch the magic. Depending on the humidity you can see rust as quickly as 20 seconds. Backstory, we had a random inspection of a toolkit by Quality Assurance (QA) in the USAF. The toolkit was comprised mainly of Snap-On tools; so expensive chrome as far as the eye could see. When the inspector popped open the toolkit, it looked like it had been submersed in salt water for a decade, yet the paperwork inside said it had been inspected just a couple weeks prior and by one of our best troops. Our investigation discovered, nightshift had run out of 'CLP', it was on order, scheduled for delivery that following morning. So the Airman took it upon himself to substitute denatured alcohol and finish wiping down the tool kit as per inspection requirements. This still didn't explain the ridiculous level of rust so we conducted a little 'science'. We pulled brand new tools from bench stock, wiped them down and began setting up timers. Before we figured out how to turn on the timers we already had a super fine surface rust on the chrome which (till that moment) I thought was impossible. Another 15 minutes, the tools were no longer serviceable by military standards and we had our answer. Full disclosure, the Denatured alcohol from Lowes seems different from what the USAF HAZMAT guys provided. It seems thicker, less refined but, I can only presume it will provide similar results.

I picked one of these up a short while ago. I have yet to fire it though. I've read that commercial 6.5x55mm is perhaps just a little hot for these Norwegian Krags -- roughly 45,000psi chamber pressure, and you really want to stay around 40,000 or under.

Have a question about a Zastava M88A. Safety detent ball and spring. Any special trick to installing? Not sure but I think the after market ball I have is a tad to big. Before I go modifying thought I’d ask first.

Mark Novak is the best gunsmith I've ever seen in my life. He's taught me more about what to do with it. That's the problem everyone is scared. I know till I started watching his videos I was scared to try to do it on my own. He calmed me about it and I have fixed all my guns myself. Thank you Mark Novak!!!

With no desire to be redundant, since barrel shroud disassembly is sufficiently covered in a number of other videos on You Tube; I'd like to mention a couple of things regarding this. If you have an 8/81 and wish to disassemble the barrel and shroud, the method shown on the video is REALLY doing it the hard way. A simpler and MUCH faster way to accomplish this is 1: remove the barrel nut and set it aside. 2. withdraw the barrel from the back of the shroud and set it aside. 3. Unscrew the barrel jacket bushing about 3 or 4 turns. You can use a tool specially made for this or a piece of metal stock as the videographer does. If you do it that way, be careful not to bugger up the slots. There's a good chance this part hasn't been removed in close to a hundred years so the right tool is better, and some mild (very mild) warming may be necessary as well to get it started. 4. Insert a barrel spring compression tool into the hole. This tool is really just two dowels, one inside the other. The large one fits just inside the shroud and the smaller and longer one keeps the spring from kinking. A screwdriver of proper size can be substituted if absolutely necessary, but I prefer to tool, which is about 12" long. Finish unscrewing the jacket bushing while holding the recoil spring back with the tool. Done this way, you'll have full control of all the parts without having to worry about their getting away from you. Once the jacket bushing is free, simply withdraw the compression tool on which you'll have the barrel nut washer and recoil spring. Lay them aside and dump out the recoil spring case and the buffer spring and you're done. Simply reassemble in reverse order, making very sure you get all the parts in line: buffer spring goes in first, recoil spring case and recoil spring next, then the jacket bushing with the washer underneath it. When the barrel is re-inserted, be careful to make sure the key on the washer gets in the keyway on the barrel. Replace the barrel nut and you're done. This can be accomplished is much less time than it takes to tell and is much easier than what's shown here.

I fitted literally hundreds of those IMI made hammer forged chrome lined barrel and forged slide sets, to new and used frames in the 80s and 90s for British shooters when pistols were still legal here. The IMI parts were the most consistent heat treat, hard wearing and middle tolerance all the way. They were mechanically far better than anything Colt was turning out at the time - just not as pretty. They were so inexpensive which was the real kicker. Properly linked with a fitted bushing, and hand lapped onto a stainless Caspian gunsmith fit frame with Wilson, Brown and CMC internals; they would always group 2" @ 25yds in a machine rest with IMI 185gr Samson Match .45ACP. I could turn out a competitive, reliable, match grade single stack pistol with high-vis sights and nice grips for just a little bit more than a new Colt Gold Cup that was still rougher than a badger's ass, terrible s80 trigger and unreliable. Good memories indeed, and sadly missed....

Is smacking the butt of the rifle to send the bolt forward an intended feature or just a quirk of this particular rifle?
@OneInchofSpace
@OneInchofSpace 10 күн бұрын
Probably not an intended feature as such. You can similarly do the same thing with an AR-15 with an open bolt. All that's happening is that the jolt is rattling all the small parts, one of them being the bolt hold open mechanism which is spring-loaded to be closed/down.

Funny thing, I watched this video where you made a comment about the brown dye in the Acraglas for a repair, and the very next video I went to after this one, which the gunsmith was glass bedding a rifle, and he added the brown dye to the Acraglas. I guess in a bedding situation, it might be ok? Liked your video better though, as you are repairing a Johnson. No one wants a broken Johnson.
