Interesting info. I’ve just purchased a 1989 Morgan Dollar as I’ve just gotten into collecting. It’s got some wear on it, but I really quite like having coins that look a little rough, it kind of adds to the appeal for me.

Hey. You mentioned the 89cc was the lowest mintage of all the Morgan cc dollars. Actually the 85cc is. The 89 just had less that survived, and that is what makes it worth more than the 85. Nice video!
@devastator665
@devastator665 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the correction! Your totally right. I missed this fact and it's important because it highlights that attrition and mintage are two very different figures that both affect a coins value whether perceived or actual. 1885-CC are also quite scarce but they do exist in higher numbers in UNC which gives a perception that they are more common

My 1889 Morgan Dollar that’s a Philadelphia is worth about 100 that’s what my local coin dealer said but that’s because it is mint state if graded it would fall in the 63 to 65 category

I inherited a 1889-O vf condition, not the 1889-CC, oh well, too bad! However, if you paid $800 for that coin, you would be wise to protect it by having it graded or at least put in a capsule.
@devastator665
@devastator665 3 жыл бұрын
Well shoot! 1889-O is a still a good date but it needs to be a bit higher than VF to get into the real premium grades. Yes this is a good point about caring for coins. The 1889-CC was raw at the time because we sent it in for grading. I was also filming over a padded surface. Never a good idea let a coin like an 1889-CC bounce around and contact other coins.

Great info, Maddox. If I may, would have been a better video if you had put these coins on a table, instead of holding them in your (bare!) hands. That way, they wouldn't be bouncing all over our screens. Again, info was very useful for beginners.

Good question, I wish I had the coins to compare still, but from past examples I do believe it is possible that the size can vary very slightly between mints. I know for a fact, gold coins of the same era, do in fact have differen't diameters and edge reeding patterns.

That means yours originated from the Philadelphia mint. A good number of brilliant uncirculated Philly mint bags got paid out so those coins tend to be quite common but some uncirculated examples could be worth more if they are really exceptional nice. They would have to look absolute pristine though, almost like they were made yesterday.

Why are you spending so much on a nonslabbed coin? Also why no gloves? Luster makes up 60% of a coins grade.Your dirty fingers are bring down the value of each coin u handle. Makes me sad.
@devastator665
@devastator665 4 жыл бұрын
There are actually a lot of statements here that are not true. Firstly the Carson City 1889-CC was so original and circulated grading is so cut and dry there was really no need to make a lower offer due to risk. Sure, on some coins we would never throw out that much money on a raw piece. But on circulated Carson's the market is solid. We sold this raw with no hassle. You are correct on luster to an extent in that it is important but really when it comes to an MS coin luster is a basic assumption that it will be there and that it will be fine. For instance above MS62 the coin should have full luster period. So really the more important aspect of grading is contact or bag marks. There is no exact science to how to determine how many bag marks a coin has nor is specific number important. It's about how much of the coin is affected by them. Does it have a ton of them? Well it's probably a 60-63 then. Does it have only a small handful? Then it's probably a gem. 65-67. Gloves is a huge misnomer. None of the professional graders use gloves. Some uneducated KZfaqrs proclaim they are important but as someone who actually submits thousands upon thousands of coins and frankly makes thousands and thousands of dollars each year doing it, gloves make no difference in and of themselves why? Because it's all about how you hold the coin. Coins should be held by the rim as much as possible. If you must touch anywhere else try to let it touch the skin lightly at best. The oils on our hands can affect the surface of the coin, but your much more likely to drop a coin with cotton gloves. That edge grip is critical. This is not my opinion though, you can find this information directly on NGC and PCGS websites. At the end of the day whether we like them or not, they control the market so we grade to their standards. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

If you felt I was in anyway attacking your creditability I sincerely apologize. I was comming from a position of amateur asking questions. I should have phrased my comment better. I will still wear gloves when handling coins but I handle mostly modern coinage. I feel the chance of damage from my hands is greater than any drop damage only because I always have a soft landing spot. I'm clumsy like that. Again thanks for not really ripping into me as I'm sure you could have. Knowledge is power and there are no cheat codes. I TRIED U,U D,D L,R L,R B,A SELECT- START.
