On "My Car Story" we're at Greenmead Historical Park in Livonia MI on 8-20-23.
We're looking at a 1965 American Motors Corporation AMC Rambler Marlin in Frost White Paint. The car comes with the 327 CI V8 engine, and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Kevin King. Kevin’s had this car since 2004. He was looking for a Marlin, and low and behold he found this car in his area to go see, he bought it from the original Owner and STIIL has less than 18,000 original miles, and it’s certified miles. He pulled in a WHOPPER Big Fish here!
ENJOY!

A couple of things, One, I am a collector of model and die cast cars and it seems as though I have been searching for a 1965-67 Marlin for over 20 years!, ( amongst other cars), Finally my search ended when I found that Auto World finally made a 65 Marlin!!!!, Second, I had some personal experience with Rambler and AMC cars of this time period beacuse my ex neighbor had a red and black 65 Marlin fas back and I had a 1966 Ambassador DPL hardtop!!!!,

AMC had such cool little details back in the '60's, especially in the interior. As you found out Lou, Gen 1 AMC V-8's were fantastic street engines. They were overbuilt so therefore very heavy, and the heads held them back as far as flow so they didn't achieve much racing sucess. But the marine industry picked up on this and put the 287/327's in boats. You couldn't kill those engines and were perfect for the marine rpm range. AMC got the Marlin right in '67, but of course that was the end of the road. Pity. Lou, have you ever featured a '67 343 4-speed Marlin? That's one car I wouldn't mind owning. Great video Lou, I love the AMC's!!

What a darn shame someone scraped it. Even if it was almost too far gone to restore, I’m sure there are plenty of Marlin collectors out there who’d view it as a parts goldmine at the very least. That’s sad.

Wow, I didn't realize just how cool a car the Marlin was till this video. Our Parish Priest had one of these it was the second Rambler that I knew of he owned. I never saw it up close. Interesting thing about AMC cars. It started as Nash was the brand and manufacturer name, and Rambler was the model name. After the merger of Nash and a few others into AMC Nash, was dropped as a brand name, and Rambler became the brand. The models were American, Marlin, and later Matador. Then, by 68, give or take a year, the Rambler brand name was dropped, and American was both the brand and manufacturer name. By the 80s, Eagle was one of the American brand names. Then Chrysler bought the company and Eagle became the brand name with model names, Vision and Talon. The Eagle brand just didn't sell though, the Talon did the best, but it basically was a rebadged Plymouth Lazer and Mitsubishi Eclipse. All three were the same car, but the propaganda floating around was that the Mitsubishi was a better car. Chrysler dropped the Lazer to try to boost the Talon sales, but again the public perception that Mitsubishi was the better car, even though they were the same car, kept sales low and the Chrysler-Mitsubishi partnership ended along with the Eagle brand, making the only AMC vehicle left in the Chrysler family was the Jeep! If I were a Collector, the Marlin would be on my radar as a car to add to my collection.

Actually it STARTED as Rambler in the very early 1900's (Rambler actually INVENTED the steering wheel if that says how old the Rambler name is), then the car became the Jeffery in 1915 through 1917 in honor of the company co-founder -- it was a father/son partnership. In 1917 when Mr. Nash bought the company he changed the name back to Rambler in 1918 before finally renaming it Nash years later and dropping the Rambler name completely until it was brought back in the early 1950's.

Great looking car! The Marlin always reminded me of the '65-'66 Dodge Chargers with the long fastback and big rear window. AMC was such a quirky company. Some of their cars were really cool, like the Marlin, the Javelin and the AMX, but then they had the Matador, the Gremlin and the Pacer. I guess they were not afraid to take risks, but they also no longer exist.

AMC as we knew it may not exist, but it lives on in spirit (no pun intended) first as part of Chrysler, then DaimlerChrysler, after that FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), and today, Stellantis. Its Jeep vehicles are selling well, thanks to the hundreds of thousands of Jeep loyalists. And just two years ago, Jeep celebrated its 80th anniversary.

For those who think the Rambler was first introduced by Nash in the early 50's, Rambler was the brand name originally in the very early 1900's, and it was Rambler that created the steering wheel instead of using the steering tiller that was in use at the time. Rambler was started by a father and son partnership by the name of Jeffery, and when the father died the son renamed the company Jeffery in his fathers honor un 1915 and sold the company in 1917 to Mr. Nash who changed the company name back to Rambler in 1918, and years later renamed it again when the name was changed to Nash. The Rambler name was again dropped but returned in the early 1950's as a model name which became the brand name again when the Nash name was dropped and remained until the Rambler name was dropped in 1969.

😔Rambler was a bastard child, it got passed around so many time to so many companies with so many names.😓
@todddenio3200
@todddenio3200 7 ай бұрын
@@matroxI don't know why you say that it was passed around so much when it wasn't. Rambler was founded by the Jeffery's, was renamed Jeffery for a 3 year span in honor of the father when he died, and was later sold to Charles Nash who had previously been the president of Buick and the head of General Motors until he left GM. He bought Jeffery in 1917 and changed the name back to Rambler and the company would later become Nash Motors, which merged with Kelvinator in the 30's to create Nash Kelvinator but that doesn't count as Kelvinator was an appliance maker and Nash was the auto making portion of the company and that company merged Hudson in the 50's to create American Motors Corporation, and since it was a merger, it can't be said that it changed ownership. Rambler only had 2 ownerships and 1 merger which does not make it a handed around bastard as a merger is just a joining of forces to improve the odds of survival. If having had 2 owners makes Rambler a bastard, then by your definition, Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and Oldsmobile would all also be bastards because none of them were originally owned by General Motors. In fact Cadillac was renamed Cadillac after it's original creator -- Henry Ford -- was forced out and it became part of the foundation blocks of Generations Motors.

@@todddenio3200 Nash, Metropolitan, AMC, Kaiser, Hudson all kept Rambler afloat at some point. Chrysler was even in talks but decided only to buy AMC's Jeep before AMCs demise.
@todddenio3200
@todddenio3200 7 ай бұрын
@@matrox Metropolitan was a MODEL of a car built by Nash/Rambler. Nash and Hudson MERGED to create AMC. Kaiser had nothing to do with Rambler because AMC bought Kaiser to get Jeep in 1970 -- the year after the Rambler name was discontinued with 1969 being Rambler's last year. Chrysler has absolutely nothing to do with the Rambler name as Rambler ceased to be after 1969 which was many years before Chrysler bought out AMC to get the Jeep and Eagle brands. For some reason you are taking any company that had dealings with Rambler, Nash, or AMC and are trying to make it out that the other companies had taken over Rambler when they hadn't.

Beautiful Marlin! I love the styling cues that Dick Teague used in his AMC designs. On this one, the fastback/boat tail rear end had to be a nod towards Mitchell's Corvette Stingray. The slotted tail lamps seemed to have gotten their cue from the 64 Pontiac GTO. The engine turned aluminum dash parts borrowed from the 63 Impala SS. And that Marlin logo; to me it looks like MLB borrowed that design for the inaugural Miami Marlin's team logo. The thing I believe holds back this design is using the Rambler front end. But understandable taken into how financially constrained AMC was to do something different. Thanks, Lou!

I'm very surprised to see a hole in the deck lid, under the Marlin badge!! It almost makes me wonder if they had their eyes on NASCAR competition - probably not. The guard-covers over the insides of the tail lights, in the trunk, is very intelligent! Think that might be a Ford windshield washer pump assembly - my '68 Cougar had that. These preceded the Charger to market by more time than the Barracuda preceded the Mustang.

Neat car! People have to realize that this was way out there styling wise for AMC at the time. Prototype pics got leaked to Dodge and they came up with their own version which is fairly close on the original Charger, but that car was a true 2+2, whereas the Marlin was not. I love the way the rear quarter glass not only rolls down, but cants to the rear as it does so. Also, reclining drivers seats were an AMC perk that few other cars at the time offered. Magazine testers of the time were kinda hard on AMC for not making it a performance car, stating that it had the styling which was unique but had clumsy handling and not much power even from the top engine offering. But this is a cruiser built to eat up miles, not a quarter mile blaster. Finally, the owner was correct in moving that mirror. Rearward and blindspot visibility was horrible in these cars, something the mag writers of the time were quick to point out. They also bashed the trunk lid as an oversized glove box opening, though admitted the inside space itself was rather large. 1 writer was critical about the deep long trunk stating that 'recovering the spare tire for a flat tire change would result in 1 muddied suit'. LOL. In fairness, the same writer would say the exact same thing about the 66 Charger....

Hello Lou! The owner of that Marlin really hooked himself a great find. The Marlin was a rare model even when new. It was AMC's attempt to cash in on the burgeoning sporty car market. It does look a little strange to some eyes (including mine) but how often do you see a Marlin today? That instrument panel looks sporty - more futuristic than that of the Rambler Classic this car is based on. And why is it so rare? As someone else mentioned in this thread, only 10,327 Marlins were made for 1965. The Marlin carried over for '66, except it was now officially an AMC model (the Marlin and the Ambassador were the first of the company's models to bear the AMC name). The Rambler name disappeared after the 1969 model year (last used on the 1964-vintage compact formerly known as the Rambler American; this, of course, spawned the highly desirable SC/Rambler - I'd love to see you do a video on one of those, if you haven't already). I remember you did a video on a 1967 Marlin only about a few months ago. Ramblers, and therefore AMCs, have always been different from the Big Three offerings. The cars, and their owners, stand out above the crowd in their own unique way. I love all classic cars from all companies, whether they're GM, Ford, Chrysler, or AMC. Heck, I even go wild over Studebakers - even though most of 'em were made before I was born! Thanks again, Lou, for another fantastic video. I'll look for a video on a 1969 SC/Rambler! Edit : I didn't have to look far - you already did videos on THREE of those SC/Ramblers!

A word to the wise: Before too long I'd replace the timing chain and crank sprocket, plus upgrade to a steel cam sprocket. The plastic tooth sprocket from the factory wears down and lets the timing jump out of whack and it can be disastrous.

These were a fairly common sight back then and were easily confused with the Dodge Chargers of the day. I remember my parents looking at one but scrapping the idea in favor of a '66 Ambassador wagon. Our family was growing and we needed the room. My father got a '66 Impala to use for work.

That is an interesting unconventional classic - there can't be that many of these left in the year 2023. I always thought the extreme fastback design of these cars was a cool design, and it had not occurred to me that the design actually predates the early Chargers.

As kids and car enthusiasts, we could not stand Ramblers, Ramblers were a step above the foriegn cars we would ocaissionaly see, not including the MG and Triumph sports cars. Sort of like on the same level as a VW Beatle. Ramblers/AMC did not begin to gain respect until they came out with the Javelin in the late 60s which were cool. Then the early 70s AMC Matador also began to be stylish as well. By then it was too late for AMC, they refused to focus on styling until it was too late. The CJ Jeeps kept them afloat on borrowed time until Chrysler bought Jeep. For historical purposes this looks like a well kept survivor.

I was sure he’d say most people think it’s a ‘66 or ‘67 Charger. EDIT: I see you asked him about that! 😂There were two Marlins, a ‘66 and ‘67, parked by the side of a busy road in my hometown for decades. When I first saw them as a kid I asked my dad what they were. I always wondered what happened to them…
