Testing rcbos. Test x1 on ac mode. However, if you want to test on A mode (fault finding possibly) you need 1.5 x so 45mA. Who has a tester that does that? My Metrell is only 18mths old and appears not to do that. 😭

Please note I'm am technically inclined, but not an actual electrician, but these are my views from my side of the pond. Sounds like some changes for the good. The AFDD regs are reasonable for your 230 volts, we need them more at 120 at least that's what I get from BigClive The SPD rule is similar to what the 2020 Code here in the states requires except there are NO EXCEPTIONS under the 2020 rules. If it is a dwelling unit, you must have an SPD, depending on the type of board you have you literally can just plug them on to the busbars with no wires (some require a neutral wire if the panel doesn't have a plug on neutral. RCDs are quite a bit different over here, 6mA (4 to 6 mA tolerated) trip for life safety, higher currents are allowed for equipment protection, I don't think we have A vs AC over here. Testing here in the states is something I want to ask an actual sparky about. I think that is done on troubleshooting only. RCDs are supposed to be tested with the test button, other tests are not officially recognized (or aren't supposed to be), but can be done for troubleshooting. Note, not all jurisdictions here in the US use the same electrical code version or the latest. In fact, my state just adopted the 2017 edition in 2022. The most current is the 2022 edition with the 2023 edition on the way.

Hi Jordan, and team great vid, I agree for us here its what we have done for a good few years ,used spds for about 3 years now and not used ac type rcbo/rcd for at least 2 years , also pleased to see the stickers have gone , will still use next inspection stickers thou , We are going to start working to the new regs from Monday

Here in Germany we can fit regular socket outlets in bathrooms as long as they're outside of the zones 0, 1 and 2. Around that we have zone 3 that is 2.4m away from the limit of zone 2, there are light switches and socket outlets permitted. But they must be protected by a 30mA type A RCD (the installation of type AC was banned here in 1987). That is the reg, the VDE recommends for a few years now to install a 10mA type A RCD for the bathroom circuits instead of the 30mA one, and only for these circuits to prevent nuissance tripping. Recommended height for socket outlets in the bathroom is 105cm above finished floor and personally I don't route the cables on the lower installation zone. I'm coming from the zone below the ceiling and enter the back box from the top side or the backside. Only cables that supply something within the bathroom are permitted inside of the bathroom, no cables going through to supply something else elsewhere in the house. And actually, what is preventing a customer from using an extension cable or a cable reel bringing in a socket outlet from outside of the bathroom into the bathroom? Would have the same effect, but would be more unsafe than a properly installed socket outlet.

Hey ! I like the idea of making life more 'comfortable' for people, but this principle is based on a 'PERFECT world' conditions. 240 volts AC is dangerous, especially so in a wet environment. In REAL world : damaged unsafe hand held electric appliances get used, Faulty / incorrect RCD's/ RCD's bypassed. Young / elderly persons persons and other vulnerable persons. Wet hands, wet feet, 240 volts AC of electricity = large shock risk to no real advantage To many unpredictable risks to put a socket in bathroom what ever size RCD , besides they fail/malfunction. Would be the same electrical risk as running around outside with a 240 volt drill while feet wet and bare and hands wet........to many unpredictable risks of electric shock...with only a $ 40 RCD /RCCB/ RCBO /GFCI to protect..

Would be interested to hear your views on Amendment 2 re EV charge points. I believe there is a special required for disconnection of CPC when the property goes into Island mode. But as I know nothing about solar or batteries I would benefit from more informed opinions.

Fault current is an important consideration with inverters. I'm using some 1A and 2A MCBs on part of my off-grid electrics for just this reason as some things need to trip like lighting - in any case who really needs a 6A lighting circuit these days? It is worth considering that inverters have a limited fault current (for Victron it is a 100% overload for 30 seconds before shutdown) and most inverters won't be able to source enough to damage wiring before shutting down anyway. So if there is a fault and the breaker does not operate there are few downsides apart from the other circuits off the inverter shutting down too. Breakers are intended to protect downstream wiring not the individual loads.

In my mums annex, her wet room is 3mt x 3mt with a shower in the corner however, my electrician insisted in using an outside type waterproof double socket to plug in a washing machine and tumble dryer within the room. Not the prettiest but its neat and tidy and safe.

Customer packs instead of stickers. A friend of mine is the owner of CERTON which has this type of customer pack. All certificates etc are stored onto the cloud and a sticker Is placed on the board but its a QR code sticker. The owner or tradesmen can scan the QR and get all relevant information for that property

What will happen if u go fit a small garage consumer unit for say an ev charger etc or a garage supply and there’s no spd present? Would u just put one in your garage or put one in an enclosure off the main cu?

Think you may need to have a look again at AFD situation . It recommends AFD’s be fitted to domestic socket circuits. Then take a look at the new definitions for recommended in the regs . It means should ! If you don’t fit one you need to come up with another option to prevent arc faults occurring . No idea what that option is myself .

Thank you for your videos. Something to consider, however, regarding your point at 2:48. AFDD's are recommended in all installations which, according to the BS7671 definition of 'recommended', essentially means they have to be fitted or some alternative applied. Sneaky of them in my book. Avoid the outcry by not insisting on them but change the meaning of a word so they are mandatory.

Really enjoyed the video. How do you see the impact of AFDD’s on car chargers? I’m curious on your take with this with the regs saying “recommended in all other properties” but the table on page 18 says “recommended means “should” will they need to be installed?

Wondered if you had any thoughts on reg 531.3.2 point (2) A colleague of ,mine recons he now has to use rcbos for ALL residential situations to 'avoid unwanted tripping'. I read this differently. Under that heading 'Unwanted tripping' it says '...the following shall be CONSIDERED' and then goes on to make point 1-6. In my mind, 'considering' something doesnt imply it's mandatory. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on this

The only one that does not make sense is the heating wiring, it has always been considered appliance wiring covered by a 3 amp fuse and as many components in the system didn't always require an earth, certain makes of 2 and 3 port valves etc. That said most wiring for CH is often done by heating engineers who will treat it as appliance wiring even with the new regs, not part of the fixed wiring. Our pack of books arrives tomorrow so I'm sure I'll find even more entertaining entries.

Hey Folks. I've installed an off-grid solar system at home using lifepo4 battery storage. While the AC circuit is only on a B10 MCB, I've always assumed that my inverter and/or battery would not be able to deliver the fault current required for ADS. Thus, N-E bonding (at the inverter), an earth rod and an RCD is a must. Incidentally, I'm currently using a type AC RCD (which is working), however I've taken delivery of a Chint Type B RCD so going to replace the AC with that - I don't trust my inverter to not leak DC onto the AC side during a fault, even if it's branded as "fully isolated"! I should add, this is just my personal opinion on the matter, not professional advice to be relied upon.

I would love to see a smart MCU discussion, ie what options are available for including smart technologies into smart fuses etc to allow energy usage tracking, alerts of internet expected high or low demand. What is the best way to do this?

Not to do it. Add all those smarts in the power supply chain and the number of false trips/reports/outages will increase dramatically then add IOT to the mix to further add confusion. There's a good principal , that has served industry very well, and long before 'smart' things - KISS - Keep It Simple Sunshine. If industry wants to sell the consumer a load of trouble generating smarts then let them do so with installation after the primary task of delivering power. Some years ago a great new technology was developed for delivering telephone services ISDN, depending on your view that stood for Innovation Subscribers Don't Need or It Still Does Nothing. The same applies here, most people won't want, nor wish to pay for, the Integrated Consumer Board so keep as many smarts as possible away from consumer units - if the odd customer wants all the gizmos let them have them installed in a secondary board.

Pretty sure most inverters which make use of battery storage would shut themselves off before the MCB tripped in an over current situation...the load monitoring in the electronics is going to be far more sensitive than a mechanical MCB at the end of the day - downside is you then don't know which circuit has taken down then entire system unless you go through each circuit one by one to see which one trips the inverter...

Yes, labels on boards are no longer needed but the customer does need to be aware - hence the comment about documentation packs. I’m glad, I’m fed up with complaints about how they make the board look untidy “do you have to put those labels on?”

Hi Jordan. You said to test RCDs on AC setting. Does that mean we have to test type A RCDs at the AC setting? Or that we just don’t test type A rcds?

Regs wise, even a Type B RCD only needs to be tested at the type AC setting only. I would still recommend setting them at the appropriate type.

@@johnway2039 Found this : Additional earth electrodes Some new wording has been added to Regulation 411.4.2 recommending that an additional connection to earth, by means of an electrode, is provided to PME earthing systems. As mentioned earlier, the word ‘recommended’ is key here. This is just one option, and not mandatory. The existing Regulation 114.1 still remains and says that where a supply is given in accordance with the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations (ESQCR), it shall be deemed that the connection between earth and neutral is permeant.

To start with , you need level 2 and then level 3 certificate through college on electrical installation.

@@jackrolfe7361 you will have to ask around, some colleges do and some don’t . If you can afford to get payed less or little ( some employers they offer good salary after a few months) , best way off getting qualified is through apprenticeship scheme.

SPD question - how long until a cowboy has a statement hidden inside the invoice or other paperwork that the client is unaware of, that the client then signs off on as part of what they think are normal works? I think I have had to use a sparky twice in 40 years so the average joe is unlikely to know what a) an SPD is, and B) what they are signing off on.. The mention of prosumer - I have a computer room setup in my house, multiple UHD monitors and one of my computers draws 1500w almost constantly (mining). It's a warm room as you would imagine with managed networking and UPS APS' - This is becoming more common. At watt point 🙃 (couldn't resist) does this become dangerous and is there anything in the rules that stipulate better management of the home office? The equipment is on 24/7. I'm not a sparky, but love this channel.

Yes there’s not enough out there to educate the customers on the ever changing regs, also I don’t think consumer units should be sold to anyone who is not a member of a CPS or can prove they are a qualified spark.

I think you might have misunderstood what they mean by prosumer - it's not the word as everyone knows it (ie. equipment for savvy amateurs), it refers to electrical installations that are both producers and consumers of electricity. Eg: installs with solar PV that sell energy back to the grid. What is it that you think is dangerous about your setup? Your UPS will have a type 3 SPD in it, so no big deal if you haven't got type 2 at the CU.

There is no reason whatsoever why a customer should not be able to source his or her own CU, it is after all a certainly that electricians are not going to do it for nothing and will mark up the price. I cant stand this sort of unnecessary protectionism that some want imposed on the industry, its not as though there isnt a financial advantage for those that shout for it it whilst claiming its for "safety".

Can I ask why we need all the new tech were are all the surges coming from new builds should not have arcs. Testing I have seen on AFDs it takes a lot to trip them. I had a set up rig with a relay switching fast making a arc trying to make it trip.

Look around houses and offices, not very many linear loads, all electronic noisy harmonics, transient currents are more regular than you think probably not on the size that you think. SPDs wear out and need to be replaced.

Heating control wiring ( flex , run outside of any containment, conductive etc) , since when has it been ' acceptable' to sleeve the earth, and use as a switch return etc? Any cable (double insulated or not) needs a point of earthing incase of damage etc...... How long have plumbers been doing this as a daily standard???

Hi guys I’m looking to begin an adult learner course to become an electrician as a complete career change for me. Any advice would be massively appreciated. I’m 80/20 certain this is the career I want to pursue as I’ve always been very hands on and like to tackle problems head on but I’m just worried about the studying side of it being crammed in too closely making it overwhelming to understand it all before moving on to other sections etc

I dont agree with forcing SPDs on people. Advise and recommend where its genuinely felt that the consumer will benefit financially from having one but otherwise there is no way these things should be mandated and that is practically what they have done because the average consumer wont have the knowledge required to make an informed decision. Varistors and/or surge limiters are fairly standard on most expensive electronic goods SMPs anyway.

For me an SPD was perfect, all of my equipment was protected by local surge protectors and that was just a pain in the ass. Even the most expensive equipment may have protection but even when that triggers it can still cause damage. For me having it central in the CU was much better.

@@JoannaHammond same I’ve got loads of surge protector plugs but when my plastic board comes out it’s defo having a main consumer unit surge protector, I did contemplate AFDD’s but with 13ways it was too much wonga with the Hager stuff over £100 each for a AFDD

@@krishtheobald4227 Why, currently a risk assessment can demonstrate that a SPD is of little purpose in many installations. The only thing that a risk assessment probably can't cover is a direct lighting hit in the immediate vicinity of the installation and the laughable SPDs, included in the consumer unit, will probably dissolve! People also forget that these SPDs have a finite life for 'hits' and progressively stop being effective so what use are they after 3 years? If your installation is going to be exposed to significant surges then a more significant SPD installation, outside of the CU, is required.

socket in bathroom SOO00oo dumb, even at 2.4m from zone....in electrical engineering terms its same as standing outside (ok so its not raining, but the ground is wet....) with a handheld 240 volt item...WET hands...WET bare feet...wet floor...metal tap / radiators etc............its reeeeeeally stoopid. I assume this ' european harmonisation' is relying on ,...... a £40 RCD operating 'OK.'.....when that hairdryer/straightener lead that has been repeatedly twisted for years eventually exposes a conductor...a common event.......... Like mentioned, similar to using hand held equipment outside in bare feet and wet hands.....bonkers. 'European harmonisation' sounds so clever and sophisticated until you realise its really not all that.
