"le petit déjeuner des chats", a film by the french brothers pathé, from 1906. the girl is my father's grandmother, estelle roy de menditte, who lived in troyes, in the aube (east of france). i had seen this film, which we had in the family, but not as beautiful ! (i still have three glasses like the one on the table. maybe one of the three is the one there ;)

@Laconic Not sure I agree regarding intellect. Bear in mind I don't equate intellect and intelligence. There probably not much of a difference regarding intelligence, and while we are more knowledgeable today I'm not sure that we're more intellectual. We're definitely way less civilized, that's for sure. As for personalities, perhaps, though it was far more tempered back then.

I knew a woman that was 33 or 34 when this was taken - a family friend that died in 1979 at 106 or 107 (she was born in 1872). Actually I knew a number of people born in the 1890's when I was young, but no one older than that other than Aunt Elva (the woman I first mentioned). I am not young myself, but I still have a grandmother, she will be 100 in March. As far as I know, here is no one born in the 1800's left on Earth, they would be nearing 124 if born in December 1899 if still alive. These people used English differently than we do today, they had a lot of interesting sayings and used a lot of words which aren't used any more. In general they had a different perspective on life than we do today, and a clearer sense of values - they did not always follow these values, but they sure knew what they were. I miss these people - if still around we would benefit from their view point. People today imagine these people as ignorant compared to us now, it was not necessarily true, my great great uncle Frank Cash was an electrical engineer in the 1920's, he specialized in radio, a big thing back then. He and his wife both lived past 100, he was 102 or 103 when he died, his wife lived about a year longer. He was a ham radio operator, he got me interested in the subject when I was a kid, his radio was surplus from a WW2 USN destroyer - it was a big piece of equipment, grey iirc. I wish I could remember the language used by these people, I would know it immediately if I heard it, but it is more or less beyond the immediate reach of my memory nowadays - maybe I can remember a word or two - my great grandmother would tell a kid she saw picking on someone to stop plagueing them for example (the base word is "plague" if you don't recognize it in that context), and if something did not bother her she would say "It doesn't phase me" - that word at least is still around. Another thing about their language is that they never used sex related words when swearing, they were all God dammers and son of a bit@#ers when they got worked up.., some would not swear at all if they were particularly religious. Also, they had a strong urge to wear hats when outside (my great grandparents always tried to get me to put a hat on when I left their house). The women born in their era virtually never wore pants, clothing was completely different between the sexes, women did not wear shirts either, they wore dresses or blouses. Also, their clothing in general was very, very out of style. Time doesn't stop for anyone.

Assuming the grandma is at least 80 (could be wrong, but she looks older than 70), 1906-80 equals 1826. This means we are using film to look at someone who was born 200 years ago. Who was middle aged at the time of the Civil War. Who most likely didnt even live to see WWI, let alone WWII. That is fucking mindblowing.

@notisabellol medicine and rights sucked so people wouldn’t live longer and at around 60 you were already in pretty bad shape physically and mentally in the Victorian times (and would also make an effort to look older as well tbf) so it’s unlikely she’s 80, wich is our idea of old grandma now. Even in the 60s you were already retiring with all sort of issues (hence Paul McCa ‘64’ 😁). My great grandparents were starting to lose their hair and teeth around this time, and my grandparents don’t look a day past 50 while retired for a decade with no health problems (and the knowledge that if they do develop one, is not a sentence anymore at this age, so this gotta slow down the stress/aging too I suppose..)

@Maximal I know what it’s supposed to be. There is a newspaper clipping with a picture of this girl and kitchen setting from that time. She is very similar, but the details are different, the hair and bow, the wallpaper etc. The artifacts in the b&w version of this film look like they were added to make it look old. It seems odd they managed to clean out all the horrible blobs but left several lines, so it didn’t look “too” clean. I believe the old film was lost and someone just made a recreation. Very little film from that era survived and much of it looked very bad even into the last half of the 20th century.

These remastered videos put time into perspective. We are finally able to see that humans were not any different 100 years ago than they are today. 100 years is really not that long. This girl, who looks and acts a lot like my own daughter, did not stay this young forever and now she is gone. Beautiful and humbling! Appreciate life, love slowly, take time for reflection and gratitude.

Thank you so much for sharing this and for the hard work you have done to remaster and colorize it. Absolutely amazing work. When old films are colorized and remastered it really makes a difference and brings the people to life more. Some say that people looked a little different more than 100 years ago (genetics, evolution call it what you will) but here this girl looks like she'd fit in anywhere and you would not know she was born in the 1800s if not for her clothing.

Every time I see one of these films from a century ago, it makes me think inwardly on my own time that I have on this Earth. It makes me sad to know that someday will we become just as distant as this girl and her cat. It is from a time so long ago, that you can’t even call it the same world you call home. This is why preservation should be taken more seriously as a global initiative, because everything that we say and do for public/commercial interest should be documented and saved so that the people looking at us so far away can say, “hey, we can learn from them to be better, smarter”. Something so mundane as footage of yourself eating a bowl of cereal will be cherished when your name is forgotten a century from now.

I'm unsure why some are in amazement at how 'modern' this appears? Its 1906, human features were as defined then as they are now, if anything way more natural back then. Human interaction has never changed, if anything with the advent of technology and instant gratification, we have become more disconnected in this time. They had very little back then, materialism was rare, and they appreciated every gesture and kind act.

This girl could be transported into 2023, no one would suspect she was born 130 years ago. Same mannerisms as modern children. Strange how no one puts forth the theory that cats could be aliens. My theory is that cats started out as scouts for aliens and once they gathered enough information then they were supposed to report back to the Mothership, but they got so used to being pampered that they just stayed here. So the aliens sent more and more, but the same thing happened each time till the cats reproduced and now the aliens just left them.

Estelle Roy de Menditte (born 1892), also known by some as Estelle Roy or Estelle Menditte for short, was an actress born in Troyes, Aube, France, who starred in a handful of lost family test reels and the 1905 short film, "Le déjeuner de minet," also translated to, "Pussy's Breakfast," or "Cats' Breakfast," released in 1906 by the Pathé Frères company. She was the great grandmother of French vlogger, Abel Roy, who confirmed her identity and background on her life in 2021, after viewing the remastered and colorized version from the film collection, "Eye Filmmuseum (Amsterdam)," on KZfaq. It was later confirmed that the older woman in the same film was Estelle Roy de Menditte's grandmother.

Lots of good comments about time. Here's another one. My grandmother would have been 18 when this film was made, a few years older than the girl you see here. She died in 1981, aged 93. I was 22 at the time, so she lived to see me graduate. It does not seem so long ago to me and I can still hear her voice in my head. The past is much closer than we often think. When I was a child loads of Victorian people were still very much alive.

Estelle Roy De Menditte, may you rest in peace. 1892-1988. You lived a very beautiful and gentle life here while on Earth and may you receive only the best in the afterlife, whatever it may be. You may be gone from here physically but I’m sure that in the minds and memories of many people, me included, that you are still alive and will be remembered. - Shad
