Yeah, it's not so much that I worry about wear; it's more a matter of wanting the thing go "Bang" when I pull the trigger. Reliability is paramount with me over everything else.

Thank you so very much Hickok! My Grandfather recently passed away, and 2 of the items he actually gave me 2 days before passing were 2, 1911's, and I most definitely wanted to learn what I could about these historical, and sentimental guns. You walked me through cleaning my first gun, and gave me the knowledge to preserve something special that was once my grandfather's and now mine. Thank you very much sir!

One of the local gun shops just started carrying Ballistol, so I picked up a couple of cans out of curiosity. As I was getting back into my truck, the door hinge made a loud squeak and a squeel. I soaked it down with Ballistol, then around to the passenger side. The doors haven't been that quiet as long as I've owned it.

The 1911 was my service weapon when I was in the military nearly 40 years ago. Just bought a new 1911 partly out of nostalgia and partly because I wanted more stopping power for my EDC (had been carrying the Walther PPS in 9mm). As it had been so long since I field-stripped and cleaned one, came here to see how the Master does it. It was definitely helpful seeing how he does it. Will be going out and getting some Ballistol for sure.

I just picked up a classic series 70 1911 and I was using the same pps m2 as my edc. Both are AMAZING guns, having a modern poly striker fire police pistol and a timeless government model really rounds out my little collection, but it's hard to shake how good a solid steel tool feels in the hand.

This man saved my life, literally. My first 1911 and I labored to disassemble and clean it. After battling to get it back together I went to this man before I ate a bunch of Halloween candy purchased for the trick-or-treaters and went into a diabetic coma. I have never had so much frustration with anything! I wanted to dig up John Moses Browning and pop his corpse with a Glock (savor the irony). But in the end I succeeded with sage advice and will force myself to take it down regularly until it becomes second nature. Great to shoot, the backbone of our military for nearly a decade, a wonderful bit of hardware- but no fun to clean. God Bless and have a nice day.

When re-assembly came I could not get the slide lock back in to save my life. No one mentions anything about it NOT going back. I thought for few minutes I did something wrong internally. I kept taking it back apart and so on. I had to use a flat tip screwdriver to push the safety spring loaded button in, in order to get the slide lock fully in. The wiser I am now. Thank You for your video! I will probably always use it as a reference.

I just cleaned the WW1 Colt that I bought. I could not believe how much crud was in the rails and the locking recesses on the slide. Took quite a while to scrape the gunk out of the rails. The WORST part was the bore for the extractor. That was just plain nasty. Looked like it had never been cleaned in the past 99 years. And I don't understand that, because the extractor and firing pin are very easy to remove (especially on the original 1911's.) Maybe it is just an 'out of sight, out of mind' thing? But now the gun is super clean, inside and out. Running the slide feels like moving a piece of glass on top of another piece of glass, with some butter in between ;)

there's a great moment that comes when you can disassemble clean and reassemble your 1911 without having to watch a tutorial video. it's like you just learned how to play some Masterpiece on a piano. and I have to thank you Hickok for making a very thoughtful and thorough explanation of how to do so effectively and efficiently.

As a Brit we don't have access to firearms like our transatlantic cousins. That being said I'm looking at some jobs within the firearms industry, and these videos are amazingly informative. I'm lucky I get to go to a range as my wife is Czech, and they have pretty reasonable gun laws

That's generally good advice, except for Dan Wesson guns with a Duty Treat finish. Don't use tape on those surfaces as it may leave permanent blotches or cloudiness.

Bufkinator second video I watched today and both said to be careful not to get lube in the mechanism in the back part of the handle. As a novice to the sport, guess what part I soak with oil! Geez I’m going to have to go back over each Gun and blow out as much as I can and hope for the best.🤬

The area most people do not clean is the link pin. Also, most forget to clean the magazine. Most do not realize that carbon does impregnate the magazine spring and thus may affect magazine feed problems. Add to this that carbon may cause the spring to not react properly. Other then that, most will clean it well. One must also clean the magazine well. That aids in the ejection of a magazine.

Great job with the video, many thanks. A friend told me his uncle was in Korea. He fired his 1911 about a thousand times in a two week period, was not able to tear it down for cleaning the whole two weeks. It run like a Swiss watch, never failed him. So they can take abuse and neglect but I don't recommend it.

Thanks Hickok! Your suggestion of leaving the barrel link forward when reassembling the 1911 means that I don't fear cleaning my gun because it's going to take 40 minutes just to put it back together again. I love shooting 1911s again!!!
