A quick field strip and cleaning of the XDm 5.25. Again, this is what I do, not necessarily what everybody ELSE does. It's worked for me over the years, and it continues to work.
We'll eventually post the actual video of shooting this gun before too long. :-)

@nebulabass, Every lube / cleaner is supposed to be better than every other lube. As always, I just share what has worked very well for me and what I like. I have a decade of successful experience with this stuff in all my guns, so I'm not likely to be switching around anytime soon. :-)

Just bought my 1st gun on Friday and followed your video for cleaning before heading to the range and after shooting. Tons of video of cleaning videos, where people talked too fast, audio was poor, and other issues, but your video was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks again for all your great videos!

Got a deal on an XDm in .45 yesterday. I clean everything fresh out of the box, new or not. This one was new but they obviously test-fire them at the factory. Giving it a good cleaning smooths things out on a new gun. Easier to operate the slide, etc. Thanks for the tips here because this is my first XDm.

So glad to have been introduced to Ballistol by your channel a few years back. It has worked wonders for me on everything from old wooden stocks to dried out moldy leather holsters and rifle slings. It's also my primary B-level cleaning solution now.

@glynn72, I do know that if you mix it with water and make what people call "Moosemilk," it goes further and works great for soaking & cleaning dirty black powder guns. With prolonged soaking, however, it can damage Color Case Hardening. I let a Colt soak overnight in the stuff one time and noticed that it faded the CCH to some extent. Something about mixing it with water, plus I didn't realize that CCH was actually fragile stuff. Does fine, though, full strength. I use it daily on Colts.

Being a newbie to semi auto pistols, Revolver only until recently this video really helps me know just how much effort to put into cleaning. I use ballistol since all the other products I am allergic to if I get it on my skin. I use gloves but I always seem to get splashed and get a red spot that itches for days. I am spending too much time so you really help me get clean what really needs cleaned. Thanks Hickok.

I just changed over to Ballistol and I love it. I have a Mosin Nagant M38 with sticky bolt probems and tried everything and nothing. But once I used the Ballistol on it everything went butter smooth. For cleaning and lubing this is it. Thanks Hickok45!

@BeagleBro, The only consolation I can offer is that after 10 years of using it, I actually like the smell. It doesn't smell bad to me at all, seriously. That might just mean I'm sick or something, but it really does smell fine to me. Maybe it's because I'm never smelling any other gun lubes or cleaners - don't know.

@DrWuzer, I'll have to look at both videos, but actually there would not be that much difference. I think I was doing one of my primary carry guns in the Glock video, so would have been cleaning it and sticking it in my holster for the day possibly. In that case, I would err on the side of caution. With this gun, which his just a range gun, I was a bit more liberal with all the cleaning maybe. The main thing is to keep oil out of the firing pin channel and such, as well as down in the frame.

Two additional things that really help. First use dry self lube spray to hold gun upside down and spray out rear frame sear area where safety lever and disconnect all come together. That area can NEVER become oily and gummed up. Especially firing in cold weather. Also using a magazine brush up and down the magazine channel and cleaning and lubing the magazine release area really makes a difference. Leaving lube on the back edge of the slide lock really helps on high speed reloads and leave a touch of lube on the sear and striker face will make the trigger break very crisp for first 100 shots in a match. Lubing the slide and plastic rails is not necessary but will lengthen the life of the gun dramatically as will keeping the chamber barrel clean. Slide glide grease for the outside of the barrel before assembly extends life dramatically. You can put 50K rounds through this gun and still run like new. Needs all springs replaced every 1-2 years depending on usage. Safety plunger must be removed cleaned and polished around the outer edges and must drive striker pin out and clean that channel too.
@sinajg
@sinajg 12 жыл бұрын
Good stuff as usual. I definitely think a lot of folks overthink the cleaning process, especially with modern firearms. Nice to see someone who's not too anal about it. One suggestion I'd make for a striker-fired gun: when you clean the breechface, hold the slide with the muzzle end facing down. That way when you're scrubbing the face, any debris will fall down to the table rather than into the striker channel. Thanks for the continued level of quality in these videos!

He usually sprays and doesn’t spare the ballistol. Not wildly but doesn’t have to be super meticulous. As long as it’s not in the firing pin channel or some other nook and cranny you shouldn’t be lubing, it’s okay to get everywhere else basically and wipe it off. Great for corrosion resistance. That’s how I’ve used it the last few years at least and Ballistol has been great for me.

Good vid. One thing I do, is use Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber to clean the striker channel. (Gun Scrubber is residue free). I have had both an XD and Glock FTF because of gummed up striker channels (but I shoot a lot). I usually do a complete disassembly/cleaning of the striker assembly every 6 months, but between I spray the striker channel (through the striker hole and then the back of the striker) with the Gun Scrubber.

I clean my guns the same way, I use the bore snake mainly. I also use G96 Complete Gun Treatment as there isn't a lot of ballistol kicking around here. When i first started though i did screw up and put too much lube in the firing pin channel. I sent my G21sf away to get the ambi mag release changed ( to a Glock Warranty Center), basically the receiver changed out, and he cleaned the gun while he was doing that and gave me a lecture about not putting oil in the firing pin channel.

I'm sure you've heard it before but, with as many guns as you shoot, you may want to consider getting a Sonic Cleaner. Could save you a bunch of time. I use the Hornady Magnum Sonic Cleaner, works great with the gun cleaner additive. @barret740 It really IS good stuff; unlike some oils, Ballistol is actually harmless to (bare) wood and leather. It was developed many years ago in Europe for a soldier to be able to clean his rifle, protect the metal after cleaning, and could be used to preserve the leather sling. It also mixes with water, which is good for cleaning blackpowder guns.

An old trick (from Bill Wilson) for cleaning the frame rails, is to get one of those gun cleaning brushes (looks like a large toothbrush) with the square hole in the end of the handle. Cut off the end of the handle and the bottom "rib". Leaving the top "rib" protruding from the end of the handle. Once you have done your basic cleaning of the slide rails, then take a patch (with solvent) and place over the "rib" of the brush and this should be a good fit in the frame rails.
