The flare scene, they are called star shells, they were used to illuminate "no mans land" at night so the look outs could see if the enemy was sneaking over to attack. The star shells went all night, millions of them were used during ww1

Truly, one of the best of the 21st century so far. Not much of a horse race, compared to the 80s and 90s when I was growing up. But it stacks up well against any film ever made. Fired on all cylinders. A masterwork made by cinematic masters who knew what they were doing.

Cauterizing the wound wouldn't have stopped the bleeding. Standard issue German Trench knives were about 5-6 inches in length and he plunged it deep into Blake's stomach. He most likely had severe internal bleeding, surgery would've been needed.

True. Unfortunately Schofield is exacerbating it by dragging him around and putting strain on it. I learned in First Aid training that in what's called a 'catastrophic bleed' the priority is to patch up the wound, I'd use two bandages on him at least and apply pressure

When I was a kid in the early 1990s a veteran soldier just like these guys came to my school to talk to us about his experiences. Lovely old guy, very friendly, kind, charming and easy to talk to as far as I remember. He said that the trenches smelled different wherever you were - some would smell of rotting sandbags, or disinfectant, chemicals left over from gas attacks, or of course, dead people and animals. He also talked to us about what it was like going 'over the top' into no man's land in an attack.

Little background... a month and a few days prior to the setting of the date of this film... on the 20th February 1917... my Great Uncle Gilbert was killed 14 km south of the location of this film in a small town called Fampoux... he was in the 4th South African Infantry (South African Scots)... having survived the absolute massacre at Delville Wood (14th - 20th 1916) he was killed having volunteered for service at the front... he was 21 years old!

Anna. The song you mentioned (23 min. in) is actually a Christian Hynm dating back to before the American Civil War and often sung by th troops on both sides. In the song, the lyrics of "crossing over Jordan (ie. the river Jordan)" is actually about the singer dying or facing their imminent demise / death.

My Great Grandfather took part in the 'Somme Offensive' in 1916 (58,000 British casualties on the first day). The attacks started on the 1st July and were called off on the 18th November. My Great Grandfather was killed 12 days before the end (one of the 420,000 British casualties). My Grandfather was 6 when his dad went to war. He never saw him again... but in 1939 He too had to go to war with the Germans.

The scene of D Company listening to the man singing "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" (oddly enough, an American song) brings to mind a similar story from the American Civil War. When General Grant's Army of the Potomac had entrenched itself around the Confederate City of Petersburg, VA, it wasn't all that different than the trench warfare of World War 1. For weeks, the deadlock persisted while Sherman's Army was trying to take Atlanta. Every evening, around dusk, a Confederate Cornet player would play so beautifully that the troops on both sides would cease their work, just to listen for a while.

Anna. Burning the wound will not help at all and would likely make it worse. It was the internal bleeding that killed him.
@invisibleman4827
@invisibleman4827 2 жыл бұрын
It's possible, but personally don't think it was internal bleeding. Last week I completed a First Aid certificate for work, and I can tell you that a situation like this means that Blake was suffering a 'catastrophic bleed' from a severed vein in his torso. In that situation you need to put pressure on the wound to stem the blood flow, put a dressing on the wound and if that bleeds through, put another one on, and if that bleeds through, find where the pressure needs to be and apply until blood flow can be stopped. Then you'd need to lay him down and lift his legs above his head, probably prop them up on a chair or something from the farm. The worst thing you can do is try and move them since that puts too much strain on the injury, last thing you need when you're trying to stop a life-threatening bleeding injury. Later on in this scene, Blake is showing signs of 'shock' due to massive blood loss and in that situation once the blood flow would be stemmed you'd need to try and keep him warm and comfort him. Unfortunately, Schofield isn't a trained combat medic or first aider so he's not able to help, and is still occupied with the mission so there wasn't much he could do. 😢
@herbsuperb6034
@herbsuperb6034 6 күн бұрын
For a missing limb, perhaps. But not a gut shot. So much internal damage, that stopping the bleeding would amount to nothing, and more damage would be done. It's just a wound you're not coming back from without a blood supply, and a hospital, and a skilled surgeon. Early in the war, German Soldiers were issued bayonets with triangular (3 edges, instead of 2) blades. They left HORRIFIC wounds that were nearly impossible to mend, and God only knows how many British and French troops died from wounds they might have otherwise survived. Allied soldiers, on many occasions, were known to summarily execute captured German troops caught with these weapons, because they hated them so. They were eventually outlawed.

I hate poking holes in a movie but this thing has holes you could drive a semi through. The Plot was absurd. By 1917 both sides had Field Telephones up to their forward trenches. A message would have gone by phone to the forward trench that the assault stepped off from and then taken by a Company Runner from the forward trench following the path of the Assault Units. Not having to cover half the known world and swanning about all over the rear of the German Army to get a message to Units on the other side of the battlefield. Visually the Movie is stunning in it's authenticity to the sets and uniforms. The rest is Bullcrap. "The Lost Battalion" is a World War One Movie about real people who really did what the Movie portrays. You can find it here on youtube by searching for "The Lost Battalion (full movie)". The Lionheart Filmworks youtube channel has movies and documentaries on military history with an emphasis on American Military History. You should check it out. Don't forget to press the "Videos" button for a full listing of all their videos.

@loganinkosovo
@loganinkosovo 2 жыл бұрын
@@isaiahgonzales9989 It's called a wire repair team. Wires were cut all the time. Even if they couldn't get a message to the frontline trench using the field phone there is no way they would send runners half way across the bloody world but would have sent runners from the jump off point of the unit they were trying to contact. Like I said, It was a good representation of the western front up until they got out of no mans land. They should have had more bodies and parts of bodies laying around though. A British veteran of the western front said he would look at the kilt of a Scots soldier hung up on their barbed wire to see what direction the wind was blowing to see if he needed to put on his gas mask. He also said he liked the smell of the German gas because it smelled like pineapples. He couldn't figure out how he didn't smell himself to death. You need to watch "BBC The Great War (Enhanced 1964 BBC Documentary)" here on KZfaq. It's 26 episodes and interviews the people who were there and not a bunch of history revisionists.

@@loganinkosovo If you're so concerned with how a historical fictional film treats its plot, maybe you should just stick with those documentaries. This movie was made for Gen pop, not history buffs who get their feathers ruffled over a well written plot point that NO ONE else has a problem with.
