I saw 1917 on Premiere day, and it was amazing. The up-close camera making it feel like we’re in this fight with the soldiers is an amazing touch. When they trek through no-man’s land, it feels like we’re in a First Person Shooter trying to stay hidden from a potential enemy that’s impossible to see until you’re right in their face only to find the enemies weren’t there at all. It’s also notable for being the first movie in recent years (for me at least) that wasn’t a loud mess through 95% of it. The sounds felt realistic, with the moments of serene landscape and natural bird calls, a mooing cow, and the crunching of leaves, gravel, and dirt under the soldier’s boots aiding to sooth my ears from painful moments literally 5 minutes earlier. I swear I could also feel the force of some of the explosions and other things from the speakers, and it’s not a bad thing. If anything, it increased my immersion tenfold. It really did feel like I was in a VR experience, and I’m talking with our current (consumer readily available) technology. In short, the sound balancing was some of the best I’ve heard.

I very much enjoyed the effort this movie put in to show the conditions of the time. While the movie might not dwell on it you do get the sense of how miserable and soul destroying WW1 was. It's the good kind of historical film that only comes along once and a blue moon and is like a fine wine to history buffs.

was a great and beautiful film. I haven't felt that kind of emotion mixed with adrenaline while watching a movie in quite some time. Highly recommend this movie!

Just saw it earlier today, fantastic movie. Probably my pick for best movie of 2019 (with runner ups being Jojo Rabbit and Knives Out)

The metal gear solid music threw me off. Remember that time you used an old military marching song for that bug cartoon? Probably a better choice for WW1 than a song incorporating an iconic game theme for a game with sci-fi elements.

A good review though, I think I'll actually go see this one then.

hahaha I think I used that music for Ant Man 2, didn't I? Yea, you're probably right, it would have been more appropriate here. For some reason though, I've always associated the MGS2 theme with like, old somber war stories. idk if my brain is somehow linking it to MGS3 instead of 2, but it's always just fit to me. The movie is excelent though. Definitely check it out. I have a feeling this one will be cleaning up come Oscar night.

@@BullSession Ah yea, maybe it was Ant Man 2, but you mentioned some cartoon in my comment that I looked up maybe? I think some other reviewer said it felt a bit videogame-like since you never leave the main character's side.

American Beauty and Skyfall were trash so I was worried this would be trash too, but it was actually surprisingly good.

It is not a film ABOUT WW1 it is a film to help experience WW1

J.R.R. Tolkien fought in WWI. His experiences there influenced LOTR. Now, using that as a lead in, if you decide to cover the upcoming Amazon show I'd recommend first reviewing: The Hobbit (1977 Rankin Bass special) & Ralph Bakshi's Middle Earth Acid Trip Super Duper Terrific Flavor Time, Man. :P

Now there's an idea... I've never seen the Rankin Bass Hobbit, but Ralph Bakshi's LOTR sure is something haha
