In this one, I describe and give a little history on this kit and then take it to the woods to cook with it. I estimate by the condition of this kit that it is most likely from the late 1930s to about 1941. It certainly could be older with that patent date of 1915.
Here are some links to my information sources used on this video:

Here is the link to the original 1915 patent:

I was a boy scout back in the 60s. I had one of these types of mess kits. During a jamboree, my father, who had been a migrant worker in the 30s showed me how to clean it after a meal with gravel and dirt. Some of the older scout masters agreed and knew how to do it as well. Unfortunately, the newer scout masters did not like it, and I got a demerit for doing it.

I just got one from an antique mall in Alvin, a nice older women saw me with it and quickly recognized it, she went on to tell me of how she and her brothers in the scouts would make a stove out of a tuna can and cardboard soaked in paraffin to cook eggs on these kits.

Thanks John for the info. I have one of the 1930's to 40's kits, (888) on the fry pan made by Wearever, but none of the pots or fry pan has the boy scout emblem on them. The cover has a plain snap but also has two flaps on the inside that also snap together. Again no BSA markings on the cover. I also have one of the steel ones but with no cover. I love that fry pan, very heavy duty.

14:20 You get meat out when you make small hole in the can bottom and blow by mouth. 22:45 Trangia type pliers handle is better. I use it with german mess kit and with other if needed. Pail handle is good and it can fasten by binder clips or small holes for steel wire. If you not have lid, aluminum foil is suitable. You can use it for cooking directly on the fire..

They sell them on eBay. You can get one for less than 20 bucks. Some of the kids go for about 30 if they have the separate leather silverware holder and Fork, spoon and knife. They threw in a pair of leggings with one of the ones I bought. You can pick up Boy Scout knives pretty cheap too. Just about everything. Walmart has a pretty cheap stainless steel kit for $5. It doesn't come with a carrying case. And the parts are a little small. The cup is made out of plastic. So what do you expect for five bucks. Actually it's probably better to cook in because it's stainless steel and not aluminum. But I throw caution to the wind

I have a couple of these kits. I bought one for my daughter to go camping and 1 for mine self. 1930's-1940's Neither one of mine has any balance issues and will stay on top of a soda can empty. I just have to push it forward a little. Also when you do your handle like that there are cold when both sides of your handles for a stick to go through so you don't have to have gloves. Also it's not about seasoning the aluminum as much as what kind of eggs you are cooking. Fried eggs don't stick nearly as bad as scrambled. When you scramble eggs they absorb up all of the oil. They will actually suck oil out of it until they stick. I have seen him stuck to non-stick pans.... Again my youngest daughter and her friends. It's really hard to scramble eggs in anything without getting them to stick at least a little. You have to keep working them and making sure there's enough oil. Season oil into the pan helps. But you have to keep the eggs moving and scraping as they start to stick or they will burn right to it. My guess is you lost your emblem when someone was trying to wash stains out of the mess kit. Probably during several Washings and probably with bleach. Still your kit is in pretty excellent condition. The only bad thing about that cuff is you don't want to drink coffee out of it. Drinking something hot out of a metal cup is not always the best course. I love my metal cup. But I also carry a plastic one because I love my lips even more. I know the military and everyone else have been drinking out of metal cups for centuries.

My favorite is the tinned mess kit too with the older Wearever kits in a close second. In case you have not seen it, I made 4 videos with the tinned steel kit. In one video named “Mess Kit Cooking In The Woods”, I was baking a small cake in the tinned cup over the fire and I got the cup a little too hot when the water in the mixed baked out. The result was the tin getting too hot on the outside bottom of the cup. Thankfully, not much of the tin dripped off and the coating is still good. Because of this, lately I have been using my Wearever set more as I don’t want to mess it up. I guess it will be ok as long as I keep fluid in the container while cooking. The tin set is still my favorite Scout set. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

Isn't that how it always goes though. You should see the crap they try to push off on the scouts now. I don't think these Scout people really know what they're doing anymore. Having them carrying Tupperware to eat out of. And plastic Sports bottles they were even trying to get them to purchase wood splitting tools. Like a scout on a hike is going to carry around a 20 lb wedge ax along with everything else. They even suggest bigger cooking pots and having communal cooking instead of letting the boys cook for themselves. But that's what happens when you allow liberals to see them and force them to take homosexuals as Scout Masters. Now they're trying to steal their land in a bunch of trumped-up lawsuit because they forced the Scouts into allowing dangerous people to be involved. And you know damn well they're going to buy up the land cheap and auction and probably sell it to China for a fortune. I cannot get on any social media without being a dozen of their stupid advertisements it's like they want people to lie and make false accusations. The people are standing up to them if you ever read the comments.

@Floyd Vaughn also you are an idiot and you're wrong. The Scouting movement was started in 1908 when Robert baden-powell wrote a book on scouting for boys. 2 years later Robert Baden Powell along with Charles Eastman, William D Boyce, Ernest Thompson Seton, and Daniel Carter beard started the Boy Scouts. Perhaps you are the one who needs to educate yourself. People like you think you know everything. But all it takes is someone who pays attention to prove you to be the fool you are.

@John-Sherwood-W4JFS 5 жыл бұрын
Monica Jones well, the 1940s steel kit is a bit heavier. Probably almost double the weight. But it has that steel skillet that is super easy to season and maintain. I love that skillet. Also, I have found that I have to be careful about the tin coating on the rest of the steel kit. If you get the little pot, plate or cup too hot on the fire, the tin coating will melt off. I almost got the drinking cup too hot on one of my videos when I baked the dessert in the cup. The tin melted in a little spot on the bottom but didn’t drip off. I think it was because there was no water left in the cup as it finished baking and that allowed it to get too hot. But other than that, it’s a nice kit. I was thinking about combining the steel skillet with the aluminum components from this kit. Then I would have the best of both.

You can get stainless steel ones from walmart.com for about five bucks and make your own carrying case. I have a very similar kit but with an aluminum handle (still tippy on a stove). It has no manufacture markings and the only Boy Scout imprint is on the handle to the fry pan. The handle tab on the fry pan has only 2 rivets as does the "handle hook" on the opposite side. The cloth cover has a bright brass snap with the Scout logo and is edged with a twill tape. Other than those differences it is Identical to yours. I would like to place a period on it, but so far haven't and was hoping you could provide some clues. Wish people followed these kits historically like some do with military canteen cups and the like. Yes those Rangers looked like maybe breakfast bars didn't do it. Thanks for your time and effort

Rich isme Just by reading your description, I wonder if your kit is one from right after WW2 when they resumed making aluminum kits. The reason I say this is your aluminum handle on the frypan. As far as I know, all kits were made of aluminum with steel handles on the fry pan, the drinking cup, and the pot up until WW2. Mirro started making the kit in 1940. By what I have seen it was a lighter gauge aluminum than the Wearever. Then during the war (42-45) the kits were made of steel during the rationing of aluminum. I don’t know who made those steel kits. Afterwards (1946), kits resumed being made from aluminum. And it wasn’t long after the war that they began making the kit fry pans with a lip for the handle to lock onto instead of the riveted handle locking bracket. I wonder if yours falls into that time period between 1946 and when they changed the fry pan. I don’t have an example to compare to yours. I think the key is finding a picture in one of the ads of one like yours with the two rivets on the fry pan handle bracket (if one exists) That is unusual to me.
@John-Sherwood-W4JFS
@John-Sherwood-W4JFS 4 жыл бұрын
I just went to boyslife.org/wayback and found your answer. If you find the ad for scouting equipment in the Dec 1945 edition, you will see that the fry pan has 3 rivets. This is when they re-introduce the aluminum kit #1200. If you then go to Dec 1946 to the scout equipment ad, you see the fry pan has two rivets only. I don’t know how long they advertise that kit until it changes to the “lipped” fry pan version but that would date your kit.

@@John-Sherwood-W4JFS, The Dec 1946 one is right on the mark. Thanks. Looks like that model continued until Jun 48 (possibly Aug 48, but the picture isn't very clear). The set in the Sep 48 issue is definitely the new style with the recessed rim in the fry pan, long ridge on the handle as well as a small hole near the back of the handle. So I guess the change over was about mid 1948. I forgot to mention my cup has an aluminium handle. I am not sure I should thank-you for pointing me to "wayback" ;o).

In any event it's all newer stuff I'm pretty sure they'll have rainbow covers before too long with the word pride across it instead of Scouts

@@John-Sherwood-W4JFS Save for a pet food dish, and the pot for a water bowl? Since I have yet to take my new-to-me little dog camping, I might try this myself this summer. ...I'm the sort to only trash something if I can't wring any possible use out of it.
