1939 Allis Chalmers B Annual Service

This week I took care of the annual service on my second tractor; a 1939 Allis Chalmers B. A quick oil and filter change, oil change in the air filter, coolant check and greasing will keep the tractor productive and working for another year. I mostly utilize this tractor to pull small logs, tow a firewood trailer and sometimes pull the hay rake. If you’d like to see this tractor more in future videos please leave a comment and we’ll be sure to utilize it as much as we can! As always, thanks for watching and enjoy!

Nice looking tractor, but the lever on the side of the carb. is your choke lever. And for your safety you should stand on the left palms on top and pull to start. If it decides to kick back it will kick away from you. From owner manual.

Thanks butch! I’ll have to check out the choke for cooler starts. Since posting this video I’ve actually switched my method for starting the tractor to what you suggested and it’s much more comfortable. I definitely recommend that now myself

My Dad had a 1939 Allis Chalmers B. It was hand cranked only. We had the school ag shop build a hand lifted snow plow, made from the side of an oil tank and a counterbalance was a front tractor weight laid on its side.

You have a beautiful little tractor... identical to the one I learned to drive at 12 years old. And pound-for-pound they are a beast

Nice little tractor. I have a 1961 allis chalmers d10 that i bought 5 years ago that i rebuilt and love it because it is great in my garden which is 2 acres. Love old iron which has made it through the years. I am 71 and my dad had 3 of these old tractors.

I see some broken teeth or a broken arm in your future if you keep starting it like that. Two acceptable ways to start are pulling up from bottom to top (not all the way around) facing the front of the tractor - be sure to keep your thumb NOT on the handle. Second way is to pull down from the left side of the tractor, using only fingers. The way you're doing it, a kick back could send that crank into your face or arm- super dangerous! Please be careful, no one wants to see anybody hurt using these wonderful machines. Re: choke, others commented - there's a choke on the carb. My formula for starting mine from cold is choke on, 2 half turns on crank, choke off, starts on 3rd pull. Great looking tractor, great job on the rest of the video!! Sounds like it runs fine to me!

Nice tractor! I have a 1951 B, so it has lights and electric start and a PTO with hydraulics- but a mag, no distributor. They are nice little tractors. Mine just mows the grass and tools around.

Not sure if you figured it out yet but on the side of the carburator there should be a small lever there. You flip that down for choke on. Then at least with my tractor. You do 2 cranks with choke on and then 1-2 off and fires right up (most of the time) And that brings my second thing. What I reccomonded doing is standing on the right side of the tractor and put your knee against the tire. Then you reach over for the crank and pull it about half way up. Then a short yet firm pull (if everything is set up right you shouldn't have to pull hard either) and make sure that you tuck your thumb in and when holding the handle. You want you get to be tight but loose enough that in case it dose kick back, it just rolls out of your hand. And for the choke pulls. You don't need to crank hard. Just to slow pulls and 1-2 medium pulls. There's a good video out there of a guy showing how if you look up how to crank start Allis Chalmers B. I also have an older video on my channel as well. Hope this helps! -Brady

YOU SAID THE ENGINE HAS BEEN REBUILT.. BUT THE WAY IT SOUNDED, AND FROM WHAT YOU SAID, IT ALMOST SOUNDS LIKE A ROD KNOCK... JUST FOR A LITTLE ADVICE, CHECK THE CRANKSHAFT SIDE OF THE PISTON RODS, I THINK ONE, (OR MORE) COULD BE LOOSE OR OUT OF TORQUE... I HEARD THAT NOISE MORE THAN ONCE, AND I HAVE A HEARING LOSS OF 75%+...AND I HEARD IT....

Do you recommend any oil brand, type etc for an engine that hasn't been rebuilt yet? You talked about detergents clean up very well the crude inside and can actually cause issues? Son any oil you recommend
@gingeracres3236
@gingeracres3236 3 жыл бұрын
Really any 10W-30 would be fine. I don’t use any particular brand. If you have any concerns about cleaning build up from the engine I would just recommend changing the oil more frequently.

The crank pulley has a slip notch in it it will not catch your crank if starting properly

Beautiful tractor man! Hey I'm new to the allis chalmers tractor, more familiar with the small garden tractors with old kohler single cylinder engines, so now I'm Interested in one of these tractors, found few so far, but most non running, and don't wanna take a huge risk, one guy said, it was running just needs a new coil?? 🤔, (he might be lying of course and it can be many others reasons for the non starting condition ) but let's suppose it's the so called coil, is it difficult to replace?

Hey Jose! For the most part these tractors are really easy to work on. They’re very simple and as long as you pay attention when you’re disassembling things, they’re very easy to put back together. Also, the owners manuals for these tractors give a lot of troubleshooting/fix it information

That tractor should have a choke on it right on the carburetor itself
@benjybaldwin773
@benjybaldwin773 3 жыл бұрын
You are going about starting at all wrong I can see right now standing on the wrong side of the tractor pushing the crank around in a complete circle... stand on the carbureted side of the tractor. Bring the crank toward the top about 11 a clock. Only give the crank a quick quarter turn toward you. And yes there is a little lever on the carburetor that is your choke believe me. The way you are going about it that's why it kicks back on you and you will eventually break your wrist. And only use the palm of your hand and fingers to pull the crank keep your thumb out from the crank
