Hello all! In this video installment we tackle the water pump rebuild. On these tractors you can save a LOT of money by rebuilding the original pump versus replacing it with a new aftermarket. I also want to take a moment to remember my mother, whose death anniversary was on 9-25. If you can, please share or donate to the cause of this project (link below)! Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Stay tuned for the next installment where we dive into the front steering bolster rebuild!

Read the intro and it is never easy to lose ones parents. Both of mine are gone now (I am 60). My father passed in 2002 and my mother in 2009. If you keep them in your thoughts and I think of mine quite often they are still with you so to speak. Great job on the water pump. I think they are far too many sealed bearings in places where they shouldn't be. Shot or two of grease never hurt anything.

Yessir. I don't typically disclose too much about my personal life, but I lost my father in 2014 at the age of 55 due to a heart attack. Then my mother in 2017 at the age of 56 to suicide. She is a big driving factor behind this project, but I have lost a few friends to suicide as well. It is something that plagues society as a whole. That is the great thing about these old tractors - not a whole lot of sealed bearings on them. Most all of them were greased externally.

Another great instructional video! I agree about reusing as much as possible instead of replacing the entire water pump altogether. I bet that you are glad to have the Case back in the garage. Appreciate the video, Ken! 🚜👍

Hey Kenny, I really enjoy the videos, thanks for the time you put into them. I am currently working on my Grandpa's 48 H, my first tractor project. At the risk of sounding stupid, it took me a while to figure out how to unstick the manual crank mechanism in the bolster. It had never been used in the 40 + years that I have memories of for the tractor. While I probably will never need to hand crank it, I wanted to free it up. The key is heat and lots of it. It took several minutes of torch attention and then some persuasion with a big hammer (hit the post in the front of the bolster). Once it freed up, some emery cloth cleaned it up and I can now turn it by hand. (Btw, I only broke off 3 of the bolts taking the rails off. Was good for an all afternoon of drilling and re-tapping)

Thank you, Steve! I am glad you enjoyed the video(s). The hand crank mechanisms are notorious for freezing up in the bolster (not a stupid question). The mechanisms come in handy for more things than hand cranking to start - if you need to re time the engine, the hand crank is great to use. If you need to set the valve clearance - the hand crank is great. Consider yourself smart for doing the work to get it working again! Those frame rail bolts can really be a pain when they break, but it is rare that you get those rails off without breaking at LEAST one. Glad you have the opportunity to save Grandpa's H!

I noticed about 20 years ago , on the same engine that some thermostats had a around a 1/8 hole with a small rattle pin in them. Since then if I install a thermostat that doesn't have a hole in it, I will drill one, and make sure the thermostat is turned so that the hole is at the highest point. The hole will allow air to pass the thermostat when filling it with fluid so air isn't trapped behind it and you thinking its full when its not. That had happened to me many times before I started doing this. I hope this trick/tip might help someone.

Another awesome video! I really appreciate the detail you are putting into this project and recording your work! What are you doing to clean your parts up so nicely? My '41 H is a few steps behind where you are at right now, and I'd love to master the cleaning and priming as you have during your rebuild. Thanks again for taking time to record this project in such great detail!

Thanks, bud! I a glad you liked it! For cleaning here at home I use either my bench grinder with wire wheel, a 4 1/2" angle grinder with a straight wire brush or cup brush, and an assortment of sizes for a cordless drill. I am glad you like it, and hope you enjoy working on your H!

Thank you for sharing. That is a pretty elaborate setup Farmall used for a water pump. I am trying to figure out what the impeller shaft rode on inside that packing tube, the packing itself? Seems to be like a full floating axle on a truck rear end.
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch 4 жыл бұрын
I am glad that you enjoyed the video, sir! IH definitely had the engineering minds together. The impeller end of the shaft rides on a brass bushing in the rear of the housing, and the front rides on the packing material. The front isn't really under much stress.

@@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch Can the brass bushing be replaced?
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch 4 жыл бұрын
@@1crazynordlander Yes, it can. The best way to do it would be to thread it and use a bolt to thread into it to act as a puller, or use a slide-hammer to remove it.

I appreciate your videos as they have taught me an awful lot about fixing tractors! I was curious how you determine what needs to be fixed while you’re working on the tractors?
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch 4 жыл бұрын
Justin, very glad you enjoy the videos and that you're learning a little something in the process! Usually when I go through a tractor, I know that seals, gaskets, etc. are a given when it comes to replacement. Whenever we are talking about bearings, pistons, shafts, etc.. the only way to know is to take measurements of these items and see if they are still within tolerances. Usually if they are close to being out of spec, then they are worth replacing.

Having an issue on my Super H. Don’t have the best throttle response. I’ll pull back on the sawtooth throttle a notch or two, and it’ll go from idle to high RPM, with no control in between, it’ll take a few seconds as well so it’s not immediate. Opening the gov panel I found that the screw housing on the housing where the panel screws into has a chip out of it any ideas?
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch 4 жыл бұрын
I would say it could be a weak governor spring, crud buildup in the governor tube that leads to the carburetor, or could even be an issue with the tab alignment in the governor rod that meshes with the carburetor throttle shaft.

Thats a tapered pin on the front of the fan I think. I'm working on the steering on the 42 h the top warm gear and the counter gear are junk seals are bad the gear box looks like it wsa dry for years so its all new parts for the old girl way to hard to drive with a half turn of free play driving in road gear was a lot of fun if the police see me all over the road I would have got stopped for a dui check lol bahaaaa I'm fixing everything on the tractor first and engine last because I'm looking for a stroker kit and a lp head and a few other parts. Did you re sleeve your H engine? I'm looking for a puller to get the old ones out and to have for other engine I see on youtube a video of a lady working on tractors and this and that but really had no idea why she was doing but anyway they have pullers but want a lot of money for a round hunk of metal with a few steps in it..i just can't bring myself to it and buy one.
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch 4 жыл бұрын
Al, yes that is a tapered pin on the front of the water pump/fan. It also has the flat spot machined into it to correspond with the impeller shaft notch. I did re-sleeve the H engine and have a puller assembly that I used that we made out of bar stock and threaded rod (if you go back to the engine teardown videos you can see it in action). Most machine shops can turn you out a puck for very little money if you give them dimensions.

Hey I need help I try to change my belt and I cracked that in her pulley side where it's adjust at I have a replacement Part but how do you take the Hub apart
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch 4 жыл бұрын
Once you remove the fan blade, packing nut, and the large, collar-style nut from the water pump assembly, the entire hub slides off. The only two pieces to the hub are the hub itself and the belt tension adjustment ring. It is seen in the video from about 4:00 to about 11:00. You'll then have to remove the seals, spacer and the bearing from the hub.. This is in the next portion of the video. (11:00 to about 15:00). Hope this helps!

I got pump off but cannot get that adjustment ring removed do not see a way to split them pullys apart
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch 4 жыл бұрын
@@djmorgan8783 the pulleys do not split apart. They only thing that moves is the adjustment collar. There is a set/lock screw on the collar that you have to loosen/remove before it will turn. Otherwise, they are notorious for being rusted and stubborn. You may have to soak with a lot of penetrating lube and use some heat to get it loose.
