Based on the wishes of many people I decided to repair and restore the York 125 I am using for many of my workshop projects. What you will see in this restoration video is a disassembly cleanup and subsequent assembly of this York bench vise.
I was trying to dig up some information around this specific York bullet vice. The shape of this 125 York vise is practically identical to the ones from 1934. Whereas the vise has a "YORK" sign on one side and the patent number "PATENT 68589" marked on the other one it can be assumed it was made most probably during 1942-1956. If it was from 1934-1942 then it should have a patent "Pat PDG-P-1348-37 No.155.454" marked on the side. York vices made after 1956 have a different design and have no patent number anymore. Unfortunately, these bullet vises are not serial number devices so you can't tell for sure when it's been made. You can see though how similar the Wilton vises are to York vises including the collar - at least as regards York bullet vises manufactured until 1956. The patent for the York vise I'm restoring was widely imported to the US after WW2. Pretty much the same design was patented by a previous York employee for the new Wilton vise company he founded. York bench vises come from Czechoslovakia and are produced to this day. One of the best vises ever made.
1942 YORK VISE RESTORATION | BULLET VISE RESTORATION
I started out by dismantling the vise. Used WD40 on those parts that were stuck, mainly the jaw bolts and the pins. Once disassembled I cleaned and degreased all the parts. Used a paint remover to get rid of all of the previous color coatings. Additionally to get rid of the residual paint and rust I used a small wire brush and multiple wheel brushes. I polished and flattened the vice surfaces using a file and sandpapers of different grit sizes. Before painting the vise again I applied a degreaser and secured all the sensitive parts. I sprayed the York vise with smooth metal paint and applied vaseline on all the necessary parts. After that, I assembled all the parts back together.

Amazing that the vice was actually in pretty nice condition EXCEPT the anvil had seen a lot of use. Never seen a worn anvil on an otherwise good condition vice before.

I’ve seen a lot of restorers attack a piece by banging the vises right away without applying lubricants resulting in snapped screws, broken parts. They end up drilling the the old busted screws, welding to the broken parts just to extract them (which sometimes makes me wonder if they are just are trying to show off their welding skills!). Realize parts of old rusted vises are “rust-fused”: small parts are likely to break if forced free. Hence, lubricants are needed before anyone starts disassembling a vise.

@@radiomellowtouch Totally agree. And honestly I sometimes get the feeling that somebody might intentionally damage the item along the way just to show something extra ;) The lubricant usually works sooner of later . Anyway great observation. So true.! Thanks

AllFlavor Workshop So true. Head-scratching when I see one starts to apply brute force to a piece like they’ve just learned how to use a manual can opener and decided they’re an expert at restorations. Easy to tell by the way they hold/ manipulate to tools.

Hello! I am not sure where you're from but getting spare parts and replacement for a York vise in Europe is quite easy. I assume it is not that easy outside of Europe. :/

Hello, I don't know. I am not that deep in vises. My wild guess is around 1940 -1950. ;) But I believe the guys at york.cz would be willing to help.

Good job but I have a curious question why didn’t you paint it red as far as I know all York vises were red ? Also they sell the York stickers on eBay just FYI if you want one , really enjoyed your video 😊
@AllFlavorWorkshop
@AllFlavorWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you first. That's good news, I'll check out the stickers. 👍 I've been thinking whether to make it red or not. When I applied the paint remover I noticed it was painted red but there were also blue traces so I thought why not to go with blue? Anyway my next YORK restoration will be red. Thanks again S J! 😉

Nice job. Questions: two years ago I found a York 150 vise in a scrap yard that Iam trying to restore. It has 6 inch jaws and weighs about 70 pounds-but is missing the internal nut and the spindal. I might be able to get a machinist to make these two parts for me but I have no idea of their demons ions. Does your vise have 6 inch jaws? How long is the spindal and the diameter of the spindal head? How long is the internal nut. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Philip, thanks for watching and for the comment. 👍 I'll check the vise and let you know. Jaws are 6 inch. As for the spindle and the nut I'll let you know. Hope you'll be able to get in shape yours.

@AllFlavorWorkshop
@AllFlavorWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shelly, the spray paint I am using performs as primer, undercoat and topcoat in one. I've been having good results with these. What's your experience with primers?
@RestorationAustralia
@RestorationAustralia 4 жыл бұрын
Some paints performs well without primer, but if you have different shades on the object let say you have aluminum next to cast iron and you painting this object than the color will be look different on the aluminum it will be lighter, so in that case good to use primer for a nice even finish.
