Damaged Vise Restoration of an 80 year old Samsonia Perfect Vise
Please Comment, Like and Subscribe
I got this old damaged vise from a sale for £5 so couldn't turn it down. It had some damage under the jaw so I wanted to restore it and fix it. The restoration was done over the course of a couple of weeks after work and around my family but I think it came out well.
This Samsonia Perfect Vise was made in around the 1930s by the company J Parkinsons and Sons who also made the Parkison vise. The company was founded in 1865 and run until it was purchased by Crofts Holdings Ltd in 1954 so with all that history I really wanted to save this and I hope you agree I have managed just that and can hopefully give it another 80 years.

Very nice work.. I have a tip for u.. It looked like u were using WD-40.. .. WD-40 is not a penetrant, it is a very mild lubricant.. Save the WD-40 for squeaky hinges and make yourself a 50-50 mixture of Acetone and Automatic Transmission fluid.. It is dirt cheap to make and makes WD-40 look like water.. Apply it heavily and let it soak 4-8 hrs before recording.. You'll be surprised how few bolts you snap off.. Good luck.. Again nice job..

Looks good and nice work on a difficult cast iron weld. The only thing I would have done in addition would be putting crosshatching back on the jaws.
@RepairRenewRestore
@RepairRenewRestore 4 жыл бұрын
Hi thankyou for your comment. I thought about crosshatching the Jaws but decided against it at the moment as I will be using it to restore other items I didn't want it to leave any marks. I may make another set with crosshatch so I can swap them over if I need the extra grip. I really appreciate your comment many thanks

You could have put a tanner in the lecky meter and got change back for the amount of power tools you used. I’m not going to pretend I don’t love watching 'My Mechanics' with his lathe and milling machine, but flipping heck watching all this done by hand and shear hard work was brilliant. Better not tell the wife about this channel, my "I need this power tool to do X job" won't hold water any more. Absolutely fantastic.

Really nice job 👍 I inherited one of these from my grandfather but it had a damaged screw, I recently managed to get a replacement so I have started restoration. My only problem is that the 2 machine screws that retain the front plate for the quick release are missing as are the 2 bolts that fix the nut mechanism underneath, would you happen to know the thread type(s) and sizes of thes parts please ? I'm really hope to get my one looking as good as yours.

Good job. They’re a great vice, I have the 3” model and it’s heavy so I can’t imagine what that one weighs. I still haven’t worked out what the little claw is on the base, have you?. Maybe something to do with a swivel base. If you still have the old broken jaw I believe it’s repairable. I’ll let you know how if you want to repair it. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

I have this same vise though mine is marked as a Parkinson's Perfect Vise. It's actually on my bench finishing up a restoration right now. All good, just need to make the piece of flatbar that engages the wuick release of the dynamic jaw. Sometime in its life someone else tried to make that piece and they didn't do a very good job of it so it is loose and unreliable. As for the swivel base, that was actually sold as an upgrade piece to these vises. Mine happens to have the swivel base as well, so if you would like to see pictures of it, let me know. These were very cool old vises.

What does the screw you fit at 23.40 do? I've got one of these that wont clamp up, it slips the quick grip mechanism when anything more than light pressure is applied yet all seems ok inside.
@RepairRenewRestore
@RepairRenewRestore 4 жыл бұрын
The screw is to prevent the jaw from completely coming out when using the quick release like a stopper
@davidteasdale1

@@RepairRenewRestore That screw has been retro fitted by someone before you, I've restored the 38a Model J, near identical to this, and there is a massive thick washer that goes on the very back end of the thread screw that stops the vise being pulled out, that's how it is on the original catalogue diagrams too, no sign of the screw on yours. I think someone lost your washer and added that screw. It's also there on all the other Parkinsons I have seen restored on here.

This may be a rookie question, but did you have to boil the linseed oil yourself or do they come in bottles that were pre-boiled lol.

@6atlantis you often will see it referred to in online forums simply as "blo". Its in inexpensive preservative. All my axes and wood handled screwdrivers are treated with blo, as well as the Adirondack chairs on my deck.
