Thanks for the video! I’ve got an 82’ chevy 20 with no speedometer movement at all. This video has helped a lot just by showing me the system, even if it’s not the exact same issue I’m having!! For me, and anyone else who might be wondering, when I look at buying replacement cables sometimes they’re labeled as “lower” or “upper” and sometimes they have different lengths. To know what to buy, is it is simple as removing said cable and just measuring it for length? Or Is there some other info that idk! Thanks again!
@BROTHERSTruckPartsTV

Exactly, just measure the length. Also, some cables have a lower "extension" that's typically 12-20", so measure that too.

Ok bro, how do you do it to a 32' GMC sitting on an 85' GMC frame/trans? The end behind a 32' speedo the same as a 85' cluster? It's mounted along the inside or the coweling against the firewall and goes down the drivers side. But the 85' Speedo cable in on the transfer case on the passenger side. Hi David I have a 53 Chevy pickup, my guage was bouncing all over, I disconnected it from the back of the speedo. But my guage is stuck on 80. With your experience do you think if I pull cable out and grease it and put it back together. You think it will drop down to 0 after driving it. While driving with cable disconnected I can see cable turning , I'm hoping it just needs grease. Thanks for your help if you could answer this for me

@BROTHERSTruckPartsTV

The odometer and the speedo are operated from the same cable. If the speedo works and the odo doesn't, then there is something wrong with the gauge now. You'll have to pull the gauge and do an inspection to ID the issue.

@BROTHERSTruckPartsTV

Maybe it's binding on something when you aren't turning tight? Or maybe the drive gear in the tailshaft is sliding back and forth and disconnecting the cable intermittently?

Try pulling out the cable again and greasing it. Also make sure that it's strapped so there are no long segments that are loosely hanging. It never hurts to disconnect it and spin it with a drill (in reverse) so you can see and hear where the problem is coming from.

My speedo cable wouldn't turn so I removed it and there was obvious damage, either thermal or mechanical, so I replaced it. The new one seems to be too long so I think I may not have routed it correctly. From the engine compartment, does it route inside or outside the frame rail initially? Thanks.
