Beautiful auto! It brings back many fond memories. (Some people said its style reminded them of an upside-down bathtub.) My dad worked for Nash for a number of years, and then Rambler. We always had the latest cars to drive. At the time I really didn't appreciate what a luxury our family had. I still have a white shop coat, with Nash label, and a few sheets of a Nash work order tablet. As you know, the Nash made the seats so they could fully recline and make into a bed. It was told that parents would not let their daughters date any boy who had such a vehicle. I have one of the mattresses which was made to fit the contour of the car. The plastic zip-up cover, with the Nash logo, stores the rolled up mattress. I would very much like to see it go to a Nash owner who would appreciate this accessory. If you could, please let me know of anyone interested. Thank you for helping me recall many happy times. - Joanne Cryer

I love the steering column mounted gauge cluster. Totally unique and very cool looking . I'm surprised that these Nash gauge pods haven't been adapted for use in a lot of custom-built show cars and hot rods.

Touted as an innovation, but really, it's the same gauge cluster as the Rambler had, so they were saving development & inventory & tooling money.

My '50 Studebaker has that clutch-down start feature as well. Mechanics hated working on the Uniscope gauge cluster b/c of the dense tangle of wires that had to run down inside the steering column. Nash's "Airflyte" design principles really did considerably reduce wind resistance, boosting gas mileage and reducing shear/wander due to wind. Drove one of these recently -- a Cond. 4 beater that needed resto -- and even that was quiet and rode as if on air. Thx for sharing your ride with us.

@adoreslaurel Yes, it would be very simple to install a kill switch into the circuit. Since I'm aware of the design I've never engaged the starter by accident. You are correct the Statesman is powered by a flat head six cylinder. The Ambassador had the larger overhead valve six. The Ambassador is nine inches longer than the Statesman, but all the length was added in front of the windshield. The hood and front fenders were elongated for the larger engine. But the interior space is identical.

@adoreslaurel She actually corners very well for a car from the 1950's. She's getting about 22 mpg around town right now. I've gotten the electric overdrive working again. When it engages she holds 40mph at barely more than idle speed I plan on taking a road trip in her sometime this spring/summer to get an idea of highway mileage.Her curb weight is about 700 lbs lighter than a Toyota Avalon.

@adoreslaurel Thats amazing,I always thought of these big old cars that there was a lot of weight in thicker metal than modern cars and a heavy chassis underneath. It is probably a BW overdrive and I have often wondered if o/d could have been fitted as an aftermarket item to cars with a torque tube like old chevys and fords,those cars looked as if they would not have been suitable for conversion,yours probably has the 7 bearing crank that Nash used to boast about,still OHV I guess.

Those had a flathead six cylinder if I remember right. Only thing about the "unitized body" is they became known for "unitized RUST", and with the body panels and frame being one unit there's not much to be done about it. The 90's and 2000's model Lincoln Town Cars, which they made virtually millions of, went back to the old style heavy frame chassis with bolt-on body because of reliability & smooth, quiet ride. Put a '95 Lincoln TC up on a hoist and the chassis looks like a 1955 model.

There were a couple problems with these engines. On the Ambassador OHV 6, Nash built the intake and exhaust manifolds into the head and neither manifold performed particularly well. On the Statesman flathead 6, Nash just clamped regular exhaust piping to the exhaust portals in the block, which soon corroded and led to the familiar "Nash exhaust prattle." And for some reason, Nash refused to use oil control rings on their pistons and a blue cloud often followed their cars down the street.

My father had one when I was a boy. I've ridden in it to go squirrel hunting, blackberry picking, fishing and camping. I can still remember the musty smell the cloth interior had. The tube radio hum. He was an aircraft mechanic and an oil field mechanic. He would not have bought it if he didn't consider it to be sturdy, simple and inexpensive. From there we went to a '57 Rambler Ambassador. Still a straight 6, still 3 on the tree. The Red Bullet had no equal searching for a good place to go hunting. It could climb trees, playing country music the whole time. We then continued on to a 1970's AMC Ambassador and Chevy II station wagon. The first family cars with AC.

If the car was (1) parked on a hill and (2) had imperfect carburetor or ignition tune so that you needed a foot for the accelerator, and (3) a weak parking brake so that you needed a foot for the brake, then it was not so much fun. Starting in the mid 70s I think, cars had to have electrical interlocks on the clutch. Before that, everyone who owned a car with a clutch forgot to press it at least once & had it lurch when starting.

@carolinamechanic1 The 600 [The 82-bhp six mated to the overdrive] has pepped up the 600 so that it's no longer a dog on its feet. It still isn't a bearcat in performance but it's definitely far away from its former snail class, From 0 to 60 mph through gears, the time was 20.1 seconds. Top speed in [overdrive] high after buildup is 74 to 77 miles an hour.

Of course we all called these "Bathtub Nashes" because they look like an upside-down bathtub. Far as unitized body virtually all other American cars used body-on-full-frame design until front-wheel- drive came in around the early 1990s. My Dad liked his Nashes, mostly because he was a banker and they were cheap to buy and operate. His last was a '51, after which he had Oldsmobiles and wondered why he hadn't bought an Olds way before 1955. I hate those damned column-shifts, though. Rather have it on the floor.

@carolinamechanic1 The 600 The 600, which flies the Nash colors in the low-priced market, is miles ahead of competitors on two counts -- economy and comfort. At average speeds the 600 will give between 25 and 30 miles to a gallon. This puts it a good five miles ahead of its closest rival among the big three of the popular-priced cars.
@adoreslaurel
@adoreslaurel 12 жыл бұрын
I would dispute 30 to 35 per gallon,even in o/d,US gallons are smaller than imperial and it was lower grade fuel in a low compression engine, also the narrow front track would not have done a lot for the cornering abilty and it was probably a pretty heavy car.

3100 lbs!? My 1951 Chevrolet had a shipping weight of 3150 lbs. A Studebaker Champion only weighs about 2700 lbs, which is only a few more than a Dodge Neon. Actually, as far as car weight goes, a 2002 Dodge Stratus has a shipping weight of 3220 lbs. My Chevy would regularly get about 17-19 mph, with an occasional 20 or 21, but I rejetted my carb for E10 gasoline. Chevrolet felt that the price of overdrive would never be paid for by the savings of gasoline, so they didn't offer it. BOO!

Love it...just love it! If I had unlimited money I'd buy a car just like this, change the brakes to power assisted disks all round, add electronic ignition and bespoke fuel injection and have the car upholstered with rails added for front seat headrests. Of course I'd add power steering and under-dash air conditioning. The you'd have a truly unique car that puts modern cars to shame. The only problem with these old cars is that they don't fare well in big accidents, tending to absorb the energy with catastrophic separation of the body and chassis, killing the passengers. Modern cars crumple to avoid this. In small fender benders the Nash would demolish, say, a Camry. Thee'd be a scratch on the Nash and the Camry would be bent like a banana!

Actually, the Statesman of this period had a few uncommon safety features, including a front end that was designed to crumple in the event of a forward collision. Nash had unibody construction, there was no separate frame. In addition, my '51 came with seat belt anchors factory pre-installed in the floors. Made it a snap to add seat belts in 1971 when I got the car from someone's backyard where it had sat for years. Also, you don't really need power steering on this car, steering is pretty light. Definitely upgrade the brakes, though, they were scarily inadequate! As for fuel injection, why? The car already gets 30 mpg. More power from a 184 cu flathead six? You'd be better off adding a supercharger like Kaiser did to theirs.
