Here is a new video !!
This is a rare vintage steam powered boat made around 1950 in Japan, quite popular in England and India.
The brand is C.K.
The engine was in very bad shape, eaten by the rust, I had no choice but to make a new one.
I spent an entire week trying to make that little engine, at least 1O attempts... with no guarantee that it would work well at the end :/
Please watch till the end to see this 1950's steam live power boat engine in action !
By supporting the channel you help me make more of these video and find more amazing items.
I hope you'll enjoy this restoration.

You can make your own using a coke can, straws, and milk carton or tin for the hull. There are numerous videos and webpages that show how, just google "Make your own pop pop boat." I helped my son make one for a science project, it was a lot of fun for us both.

I was sitting here in Houston, Texas watching this video on You Tube, when I realized my sister and I had one of these boats in the fifties. I contacted her in Bristol England and she vaguely recollected it. Neither of us recalled who gave it to us, or who bought it as we were spending our summer holidays as usual at our grandparents in North Wales. The boat we had was silver in colour and didn't work all that well in rough seas, so we only ran it in a large bathtub. The fuel we used was Methylated spirits, though I do have a recall using Mothballs/ Naptha, but that is rather vague. Anyway thanks for showing it and bringing back memories of our childhood. Beautiful work: you did a great job making another boiler for it, and I thought your paint job turned out great. I have a larger pop pop boat than this that was made to resemble the Titanic. It was made in India, which is apparently where production shifted to when labor in Japan became too expensive. You can also build one of these using a soda can and straws for the boiler and a milk carton or muffin tin for the hull. I helped my son make one for his science fair project; it worked just as well as the Titanic one. I have them both still.

The oscillation effect is really neat! The engine generates steam in the boiler, which expands and travels down the exhaust pipe (with a pop) that shoves water out of the pipe (or pipes in this design). This pushes the boat forward in accordance with Newton's Third Law. As the boat moves forward under momentum, the pressure inside the boiler drops and sucks water back in (the boiler also contracts, producing another pop). This water is boiled, more steam is produced, and the cycle repeats. It also has to "burp" occasionally to release air accumulated in the boiler (water contains dissolved air).

@@TheFabrik There’s a metaphor in there somewhere amidst the vinegar baths and sandblasting. Ponyo’s love for his magical friend restored and transformed her. He risked the pop boat journey over the troubled waters to connect with his family and protect his new friend. Water in the pan boils, becomes steam, is expelled and propels the boat forward. You now have a vacuum in the pipes and boiler, so water rushes in, is heated, and the cycle repeats. Now you might think that if water is coming in and out that cancels out and so no movement would be possible, but water coming in impacts the boiler front and transfers its momentum, so effectively the water coming in causes no change in the boat's velocity (water comes in, subtracting from the speed, hits the inside of the boiler, adding to the speed, then leaves, adding speed). The ones that have two pipes like this one do not have any water circulation, water comes in and out of both pipes at the same time.

That was a lot of work to rebuild the heart of the little machine. Very fine metal bending and soldering. Impressive. Nice touch with the electroplating, under paint & varnish. This little ship will have a long life now. Awesome project! Protip; take a burnt wick (very short) from a common tea candle, to put in the parafin tub. It will concentrate the heat. Also, you might experiment with slightly different length tubes. Maybe a small extension on one side, just 2-3mm or so 🙂

Great restoration. I can remember my father buying me one, back in the late 50's but the thing I'll never forget is the smell given off, from the fuel cell you set alight, loved it.
