Cranberry juice was a big deal on the 50s. I was born in 1954 and I remember my material grandmother drinking cranberry juice and grapefruit juice in a variety of concoctions. My mother told me once that the 50s was the first time "normal" folks had disposal incomes and a lot of the cookbooks and magazines of that time shows that want of "fancy" foods. Like the juices, it was the first time regular people could afford fruit out of season so then companies, of course, started offering them bottled or canned to the masses. I know it must be so strange for a young person to imagine grocery stores not having orange juice year round. I am loving your channel, for me, it brings back some fond memories. 👵 Edit~ the reason I remember my grandmother drinking those juices was like most kids, I wanted sip of granny's drink. I was always sorry, but never learned my lesson. 😖 sour!

Yay! You did the beverages! You are awesome! First off: I lived in Tampa for 20 years, and I never saw Tampa tea or heard people talk about it. I feel like Tampa cheated me. 😊 Second: My mother-in-law made cranberry sherbet for every Thanksgiving, but she and I were the only ones excited about it. When she passed away, the rest of the family decided that it wasn’t what people wanted. I very sadly said, “Okay.” One year I said, “Get me the recipe, and I will make it.” The response was, “Mom didn’t have a recipe. She just made it.” Again, I very sadly said, “Okay.” Definitely give it a try. Those were some great memories-bonding with mothers-in-law is both rare and priceless.

Funny that you mention Five Alive! This week I've been mixing orange juice, grapefruit juice, and frozen limeade concentrate to drink at work, and I think of it as "Five Alive Minus Two". I found the orange juice at 99 cents for a quart, the grapefruit juice was 57 cents for a quart, and the can of limeade concentrate was marked down 43% to $1.88, so I should really think of it as "Inflation-Buster Punch"! My summer drink selections don't go so far back as the 1950s, but they HAVE made quite a few trips around the sun. First, I compulsively brew sun tea in a glass former peanut butter jar, set inside a car on a hot day. I let it cool overnight, and then it's a perfect drinking temperature for breakfast and lunch. My favorite summer blender drink is simply Häagen-Dazs strawberry ice cream and buttermilk. My favorite summer store-bought drink is Dr. Pepper, just not in cans, that has been stored at the ideal soda pop temperature in my basement. And my favorite summer go-out-for-something-fancy drink is a Sonic "Real Fruit" lime slushie.

I grew up in the Tampa Bay area during the 50's and 60's. I can't recall "Tampa Tea" being a thing. Our fridge was always stocked with iced tea and orange juice, but it never occurred to us to combine them! I rather suspect that GH made up the name to reflect that the recipe included Florida's signature beverage - in the same way that recipes with pineapple were often called Hawaiian regardless of their origins.

With the second recipe, the reason it says to stir the sugar until dissolved is because at that point, the sugar has been added to hot liquid, and sugar dissolves readily in hot liquids. With the addition of cold liquids and ice, and undissolved sugar is likely to stay that way (leading to sugar sludge in the bottom of the pitcher/drinkware, and a less-sweet final product, since some of the sugar is sitting at the bottom.) Love, love, love this episode. And how cool that you have that glass from your great-great grandmother.

When I was very little, in the late 1950’s-early 1960’s, paper straws were all there was, although they WERE coated in Wax to last through your use. My Aunt would come each Summer weekend from Northern New Jersey to stay at my Grandma’s to go to the Beach. Grandma would make “Punch” for us to take to the Beach and always put in Pineapple juice. Even though Aunt always included my brother & me, I felt she was using Grandma & Pop as she hardly ever visited after the Summer Season was over. I'm from the Tampa Bay Area. I've lived here for 43 years and I have never heard of Tampa Tea!! Sounds good but I do not think to STUCK!! I love your videos and content! Thank you for sharing.

I grew up in Miami and the tampa tea feels exactly like something the Fl citrus growers association would have created to drive Fla orange juice sales! love the glassware!!

I'm not going to lie - you flashed the page with the Tampa Tea - and I screen shot the Spicy Ginger Tantalizer. Definitely going to give it a shot (though the 3 you did looked good as well).

I thought this would be alcoholic beverages but was pleasantly suprised! The Tampa tea kind of reminds me of an Arnold Palmer, but with orange juice instead of lemonade. I like my Arnold Palmers more heavy on the tea, though.

This was such a fun video. I've loved making this kind of drink ever since I was a teenager. I have a collection of the Good Housekeeping cook books which I started because of this particular cook book. Really enjoyed seeing your vintage glassware, too.

The restaurant chain McAlister's Deli and Cafe offers the option of adding a fruit juice shot to their iced tea: peach, black cherry, or strawberry. The iced tea with a peach shot is delicious and would be easy to replicate at home: just make some iced tea and add some peach nectar to it. The latter can be found in most grocery stores. I have to watch my sugar intake, so another one of my favorite iced tea hacks is to dissolve a packet of Propel sugar free sports drink powder in it. The Orange Raspberry and Raspberry Lemonade flavors are especially tasty in iced tea.

The fruit juice and iced tea mixes remind me of the tea punches I used to make for summer tea parties; one part each of iced tea, fruit juice (I like pomegranate or cherry because it makes the punch a beautiful red color) and chilled carbonated or mineral water. The water and tea dilute the fruit sugar in the juice so it's not so bad for your dietary sugar intake (I am diabetic so I also have to watch my blood sugar) and it doesn't involve sugar free sweeteners (most of which upset my stomach). I like to use lemon or lime-flavored unsweetened carbonated water for this. So refreshing!

Fun. I have one or two of those cookbooks (i.e. that series/look) but not that one. I have several old/vintage cookbooks, I was collecting them for a while. I sort of still am collecting them, I just don't go out of my way to buy them at the moment.

The raspberry frost? So good! and we have SO MUCH sparkling water. Also I love that you mentioned that your firdge is basically a sparkling water mart (TM) bc it is. My mint is dying outside (it was supposed to THRIVE) so maybe I will use the last leaves for drinks

I wonder if in the Raspberry Frost, you replaced the sparkling water with a grapefruit tonic water instead, it'd give it more of a zip and feel of an adult beverage without it being "adult".

What a great episode. I remember we used to have lots of fruity drinks when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s. My mom had a lot of those little recipe booklets with all kinds of good recipes in them. I used to love Five Alive years ago. I havent even thought about that for years. I can even remember the song from the tv commercial for it. You brought back some great memories for me today - thank you dear 🌸💚🌸💚🌸💚🌸

I love your mini juicer, but I don’t think I got the story on it. Not available now, I presume? Mental note: refrigerate sparkling water. Buy some first. 🙄 I too love drink options in the house. Single living can afford you that luxury. It’s not quite warm enough here (CO Rockies) for summer refreshers, but we’re getting there. Meanwhile, I’ll just nurse my White Russian. I never heard of Tampa Tea, but I’m nowhere near Florida. Sounds tasty, though. I’d love to borrow that recipe book. Must be all kinds of gems in there! In fact, I’d go a little crazy perusing your massive recipe book collection. Puts mine to shame! Cheers! 🍹 BTW: I’m now officially hooked on your channel and your presentations. You’re a natural hostess, making others feel comfortable. 😁

Hi! I have never heard it called "tampa tea" but sweet tea with lots of orange juice, or lime juice, is quite common where I grew up in North Florida and Central Florida. I usually hear it called POG Tea and it has passion fruit, orange juice, and guava juice! There's POG lemonade as well, it's delicious!
