The only difference between the 218 and the 230 is the stroke. If they are good, you could use the rods and crank from the 230 in your 218. My 1952 B3B has a 230 bored .080 over and it was a lot more powerful than the original 218 (that’s threw a rod through the block). I haven’t run mine in many years and hope this spring to get it out and see what shape the engine is in. I hope mine is salvageable and that I can get mine back on the road again. Really enjoying watching your progress!

Unfortunately the crank in the 230 will need to be turned and two of the rods will need to be replaced so I think I’m better off going with the 218 crank. Thanks for the comment and hopefully your truck will start right up. I’d love to see a video of you getting your truck going again!

Good stuff, sir. Now that the snow is melting it’s time to get back to work on our projects. It’ll be fun watching you work on your old pilot house, while I do mine. I’ll be pulling the old seized motor pretty soon here, and getting something better in there. Looking forward to your next videos!

@@GaryAhl i hope the machining goes better for you this time. My truck is basically in the same shape as yours, which is why I’m so interested in your project. I’m getting a lot of good info from you.

The thrust bearing tends to wear rapidly if you step on the clutch when starting. With the old flatheads, it’s best to turn them over with the clutch engaged, to allow the thrust bearing to get proper lubrication. Never seen one damaged quite like yours, though. Maybe it sat for a really long time and was completely dry when someone cranked it for a long time with the clutch disengaged. 🤔

Thank you for the information. I was not aware of that with these flathead engines.

Hi Gary. I believe the reason why you should not run detergent oil in these engines is that it might dislodge gunk into the oil passages and block them. I enjoy your videos very much keep them coming.

That’s my understanding too and thank you for the kind words. I hope to have more videos on the Dodge Pilothouse coming out soon.

These engines would have run detergent oil from when they were new, it was used and recommended since the 50’s. Unfortunately, many owners succumbed to the old myth that; “you only use 30W non detergent in old engines”, and this results in a sludged up engine. Also, the lack of a positive crankcase ventilation system in most of the civilian trucks, shadetree mechanics throwing away the thermostat, and leaded gas, all contributed to sludgy engines. I drive a 1953 Dodge M37CDN every day, year round, and I only use 15W40 diesel engine oil. When you put an old engine back into service, it’s a good idea to run a can of seafoam through the engine, drive it for a couple of days, then do an oil change. That usually cleans most of the goop out. The next oil change is done after about 500 miles, then you can change oil at normal intervals after that. My current engine has been in daily service since 2019, and had sustained damage from being seized for many years, but it just keeps going, and going…..

@@jusportel Detergent oil is NOT recommended for these engines that have only a BYPASS filtering system- not full filtration. These Mopar flathead engines were designed in the early 1930s and remained essentially unchanged until the end of production. (1970s) Bypass filtration systems are controlled by an oil pressure relief valve, that only comes into play at higher engine speeds, thus partial filtration. Detergent oil carries particles of combustion, grit and other junk around the engine to be trapped in a (full-filtration} filter. Not to be carried all over critical bearing surfaces. I'd rather see some sludge in the bottom of a pan than witness the results of scored bearings, etc.

@@dennisdaly907 absolute rubbish, old wives tales. Having run these engines all of my adult life, I can tell you that they DON’T suffer damage from detergent oil. The only time it would cause issues, would be when someone listened to the “voice of wisdom”, and sludged up the engine using non detergent oil. Someone running proper oil in it later, may experience issues. I have seen damage in these engines from leaded gas (pitted valve stems), radiator stop leak compounds (blocked passages, damaged intake valve seats), and lead substitutes. (Buildup of usually red gunk causing valve stem wear). I put a LOT of miles on my engine, and have exclusively used 15W40 oil. Before I owned it, the military used 30W detergent engine oil. I finally took the old engine out of service, as the block cracked. Bored .060 over, left things pretty thin. Bearings and cylinders were still in excellent shape.

Those engines were designed to run 20 weight oil in the winter. Someone probably left the 20 in through the summer.

That and a lack of oil changes. Thanks for the comment.

Very helpful video, thank you so much and looking forward to seeing more videos. One question. Did you simply wire wheel the head and manifold surfaces? I'm about to take mine off and want them to be looking that special!

Maybe put a little grease on the keepers to make them stick to the stem?
@GaryAhl

Actually I think the problem was I put a little too much grease on the keepers which kept the keepers from seating.
