As I was watching these on the '54, I thought I saw you putting in that little bit of extra effort. Then now you said this is going to be more high-end. Awesome, that makes me happy. This is going to be a very valuable car. I'm always impressed how you just get after it & get things done, but sometimes I have wished you spent just a tiny bit little more time. That work you have done on the Ghia blows me away, & the bucket truck is a f*ckin miracle, & that beetle that was rusted in half oh my God. God bless you for fixing these cars.

Man. This vid and the last one of the dash top cutout were great. It’s great to watch you put this car back together. I thought California was full of old vws rusting slowly in fields and junkyards. I guess there getting herder to find. You can really tell the difference with that different gauge wire.

a few years back many of the cities put up ordinances to get rid of old cars in peoples yards. Code enforcement got rid of hundreds of cars in peoples backyards and fields. Now it is slim pickings except in some rural towns.

I just weld hex nuts on the inside. Hide it with a little seam sealer. Good as new. Or if it’s rusted out at a bolt hole. I make a patch, and drill and weld the nut before I weld in to the panel.

One of the other subscribers told me about him then I realized we use a lot of the same techniques. He does a better metal finsh though. I have always used multiple pieces of metal to make my own panels. Much easier than shaping the metal same concept fitzee does.

Agree about patch rather than replace. My right side quarter was rotten right up to the the dash seam and hinge area, what a B&^%^d to get that seam looking tidy! Lots of welding buildup and grinding down! Great tips on the nut-serts Mike, I have a few need replacing.

I use a Dremil with cutoff disks to fit my patch’s to the panel. Roughly cut the patch. Cut out part of the damage, start at a corner with a tack weld. Then use the dremil to cut along the patch, get it level, tack, cut some more, tack. Until patch is completely level and tacked, then finish stitch welding the patch.minimal grinding.

I have the titanium 200. It's capable of stick and tig. 110 or 220. I've found the 023 wire works much better. I ordered a 10kb roll for 25$ from Amazon. The thinner wire doesn't blow through so much. I started off with 030. Welding inner rockers on my 97 dodge ram plow truck. It was horrible. Welding upside down is not fun anyhow. Lol. Swearing as I burn myself.lol
@SlickTrickRC
@SlickTrickRC 2 жыл бұрын
I've only used it for mig. I need straight argon. I live in an apartment. So I'm pushing my luck welding here. Although no one has complained. I've had compliments on my truck looking and sounding better. I rebuilt my exhaust by saving all the good pieces of exhaust. Just adding pipe to make it past the cab. It is just an old rusty plow truck. Still fun to fix your stuff yourself. I wish I had a garage. Some day...

The new quarters are actually really nice but they are super expensive. It would be a last resort for me. It’s not super hard to do just a lot more work. I would repair on anything newer than a split that if it’s at all possible.

I have 64 bug and the front quarter panels look rippled on the inside of the trunk. Think this all happened when my dad hit the garage opening. The outside is probably is Bondo to make it look normal. Was thinking about replacing the front clip, but after watching this would you suggest use filler on the inside to make it look back normal? I have been debating on what to do.
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 2 жыл бұрын
I always have worked the metal back into shape. then use some small amounts of filler to finish the job. Long bars and paintless dent removal tools work well. Remove the fenders and keep working on them till they are straight. if you need to make some path panels. Literally you can spend a week on them and be ahead of the game. Front clips are always much harder to replace at this point. hard to find a good donor. to do that best you cut the window pillars and heater channel. Super hard to line up. if your not a Pro probably will ruin the car beyond repair to change the front clip.

Nice work! But i have a question with ospho how long do you need to wait before you filler/primer it? Because I heard that ospho and Epoxy primer does not connect very well? is that true and how can i avoid this? best regards from Austria
@mikesrandomvideos
@mikesrandomvideos 2 жыл бұрын
I sand it back off for the most part. I only use it to treat the rust. then sand it off 24 hours after application. Under the car I use the other product which I dont use epoxy primer over. I usually use a household oil base under the car sticks better to unsanded or poorly sanded areas.
