The older I get, the more I love unrestored cars (like me). The more I learn about the older Porsche's the more I love the one I own. What a fun video, keep on drivin'

This car requires attention and some experience. A close friend was killed in one of these on Old Fullerton Rd in So Cal, most likely due to understeer. Still an amazing car. Thanks

A short shift kit, would be a plus. I like the rest of it.

when you drive them daily its easy, putting a short shift kit can put extra presure on already old parts and break them it may just need a bushing kit to tighten the stock shift back up.

Your scores shouldn't be penalized by not repositioning the seat. But, your scores are subjective and meaningless - it's a 10 in all categories for me. I could daily that thing in the bubble where I live and work. If I had to commute 40 miles on the Beltway, it would rate similar to your rating.

@@nunyabusiness4188 Glad you enjoyed it! Damon says the inability to move the seat did not factor into the daily or road trip score, because it probably is a quick fix. But unfortunately we did not have time to take a look and find a solution. He could have been clearer about that in the video. But yes, these scores are subjective in the end. For what it's worth, the Speedster is one of the funnest Porsches he's driven - just in a different way to more modern Porsches.

Nice old 356. But would you really trust this guy who took off the afternoon from his valet parking job to drive your treasured classic?😂

I owned a 1956 356A Speedster, and the overall comments ring true- it is a long throw changing gears, but the 356 drives a lot better than you would expect. That said, this car has been modified to the point that it isn’t representative of how these cars drove. Also, there’s patina and there’s neglect: For example, the torn top trim above the driver’s door is hardly authentic. Fix it. The paint is nothing like what Porsche intended, so at this point it deserves a respray in factory correct color before it deteriorates even more. Because the engine, brakes, etc., have already been replaced with non-original, this isn’t a preservation class car. Great car, but it needs some cosmetic maintenance!

Thanks for the comments! Glad you enjoyed the video. When the owner bought it 20 years ago, it basically looked like this, and he intends to keep it the way it is for the foreseeable future. He (and we) loves the current look's patina, representative of an honest driver. Who knows, maybe a full restoration is in the car's future. Either way, what a blast to drive this Porsche. As you said, a 356 Speedster drives much better than the year (or the interior/exterior condition of this car) would suggest.

It reminds me of an American truck. People often leave american trucks to wither away cosmetically, but when you drive them you'll be reminded that the engine is still doing its job really well. It's a cool look.

Doesn't know how to start an older car. Baffled by the long shifter throw. Couldn't be bothered to adjust the seat and then gave the car lower ratings because the seat wasn't close enough. This was the wrong guy to do this video.
@PorscheClubofAmerica
@PorscheClubofAmerica Жыл бұрын
Damon has driven very few cars with a carburetor, please pardon the mistake of not giving gas when starting. The shifter indeed has a very long throw, despite having a 1964 356 SC transmission. He drove a restored-to-original 356 SC a week later and it had a much tighter throw. Not sure why this Speedster's throw was so long in comparison, perhaps that's just how 1956 356s are. He did not give the car lower ratings because the seat was in the wrong position. The seat was moved as far forward as it would go, there was something wrong with the seat sliders that prevented it from sliding farther. The owner is much taller. We hope that people appreciate the fact that this was Damon's first time driving a 356 and therefore these were his first impressions of a 356. This fact does not preclude our presenters from driving a car they've never driven before.
@jonwarshawsky5288

I have to agree with WildBillTurkey. Damon’s probably well-versed on the more recent Porsches, but the 356s need a different kind of familiarity. They do need a proper warmup, and you can’t rush the shifts. But my bigger concern would be that the review is based on a non-original car. My first 356 test drive was in a properly sorted 1962 coupe, and it was a revelation. Such a great little car, even with the original power and drum brakes. Porsche really knew what they were doing. I think this video is a missed opportunity.
@PorscheClubofAmerica
@PorscheClubofAmerica Жыл бұрын
@@jonwarshawsky5288Thanks for the feedback. Fortunately he’s driven two 355s now and has some experience behind the wheel of these cars. The one after this was a restored-to-original 1964 356 SC, and that video will be out early 2023. It drove very differently from this car, with a much better shifter and a seat that could be pulled forward more.

I think that's Matt Hummel's Pre-A Speedster and therefore a treat to experience. I agree with some of the other commentators in that this should be tested by a driver familiar with older 356. I cringe to think what would have happened in a carrera Speedster, coupe or 550 with a finicky 547 Fuhrmann 4 cam engine.
@usafman8864
@usafman8864 Жыл бұрын
I disagree. He doesn't need to drive it like someone familiar with classic Porsches. Not everyone watching the video is familiar with classic Porsches. If you're familiar with the 356 yourself, why are you watching a video about a 356 review? Just so you could live vicariously? Well shut up and stop being ungrateful. It's your fault your own 356 isn't running anymore and you have to watch a video of someone else driving it. Nobody actually cares that you didn't have the best experience while watching another man enjoy a car.
