I purchased this 1957 Tonka Big Mike State Highway Department Snow Plow Truck online for $465.00 January 27th 2022. This truck must have hauled a million loads of rocks and dirt as the dump bed was by far the worst off on the truck. The inside of the frame and cab were also heavily rusted. It was missing one headlight otherwise it was entirely complete which is shocking considering the condition of the truck. The dump bed had been ripped off at one time and the rivets were no longer holding the bed on, the two hydraulic cylinders were also broken, I assume it all happened at the same time the dump bed got ripped off, it's interesting to me that the bed got ripped off yet overall it had no real dents to be seen. The cab had a dent in one door and just under the hood scoop where I bet someone tried to force something through the hood scoop causing the metal to bend. After sandblasting the level of rust pitting was extremely obvious which took quite a bit of metal filler to smooth out. I actually ended up putting on two coats of powder coat filler primer and wet sanded twice to get all the imperfections out. I had one little mistake on the snow plow attachment plate where my hook for the powder coating ended up damaging the final coat and I'll eventually strip that part and redo it, otherwise I'm extremely happy with how this truck came out and honestly have been looking forward to adding this to the collection for some time. Now I just need to find a Land Rover style of the same truck with the big floatation tires. Thank you for watching!

This is my favorite restoration so far. I had a “Big Mike” snowplow which was handed down to me from a cousin. Like all my Tonka’s it got played with outside and Big Mike got pretty rusty over the years from “plowing snow”. I truly love the detail and craftsmanship that went into bringing this awesome piece of childhood history back to life.

Chip, i’ve been watching your restoration videos for a couple years now. I thoroughly enjoy the start to finish, including your cat at the end. I’ve seen the growth of changing from a hand press, to an electric press. Also, the CNC machine, and other tools you’ve changed, or upgraded to which makes your shop look so professional and the go to person if you wanted to restore an old pressed steel truck. There are many other individuals who also restore, toys, etc. that I give kudos to, but none compared to you. Thanks for always taking the time and care to show everything you do, including the weld bond to cover, imperfections, pitting, etc.

The dumbest part about it is that the idiot collectors on eBay would only pay 1/3rd of the price for this mint condition restored truck compared to an original in “fair” condition. I’d much rather have the professionally restored one.

The complicated construction, parts count, and “gimmicks” on this plow-truck are quite surprising considering it’s era and the subject matter. Of course for me by the early 70’s when I had a few, they were quite simplified. Everyone wanted the big yellow dump truck, cause you could ride on it lol. Nice work!

I had an old Tonka dump truck similar to this given to me by the neighbors son back in late 70's. Spray painted over several times but was mostly orange and black (still my favorite colors ) . I guess I am a super realistic pretender, because it was an old truck I had to park it on a hill so to Roll Start it to play with it. When other kids came over to play and left it sitting elsewhere I would have to get my Tonka pickup and drive it over to Jump Start it. Not Kidding.

Those toys ran on the greatest energy of all - imagination. My late father was, for a long time, a civil engineer, and so, my kid brother and I were given Tonka toys as presents. They worked, too, just like the machines my father was in charge of. We had an area of dirt in the garden that we could do what we liked with. Our Tonka toys, a few figures, and we'd play for hours, in all weathers, too. Not a care in the world. Such happy days!

I think that you do a fantastic job of restoring toys to their former glory and understand that the market wants original-looking toys. You paid $465 for what many of us would have termed and rust bucket and made it like new. I dream of a day when a toy could be converted with scratch-built interiors, windscreens, windows, and real-world paint jobs and logos. But I suppose that would devalue the toy. But keep doing what you do and bring back the toys of our youth. God Bless.

Each video you produce is always top notch, entertaining, and the detail throughout the restoration process are fantastic! This particular Big Mike must have experienced a plow change in its life at some point. The plows with the indentations (one on each side and clearly seen) actually were produced for the slightly newer 58 model plow trucks. With their square corners, the plows were then made with those indentations to allow for fit on the front corners of the hood and front bumper area. It's somewhat rare to see these particular plows as compared to the older style with just the smooth plow surface. The older plows will fit, although very tightly, onto the newer 58 style cabs. The restored plow here has no issues fitting nicely onto the older and more rounded style cab. As always, another wonderful video. I look forward to each and everyone . Not to mention the fact that I look forward to seeing the cat inspect the finished product! Thanks a million for all you do!

I was born in 1998 but i love to see old toys that were around before my time. Its so fascinating how you can them look better than new i love how every part of them is solid metal alot of the toy cars/trucks i had were mostly plastic and didn't last but these toys that were made in the 40s,50s,60s and 70s you probably couldn't break em

Definitely one of the more interesting and unusual ones you've restored so far. I almost hoped you'd leave the plow as it was and clear coat it since it looked as if it was worn from road plowing. Cool model. Nice job!

Another amazing restoration! I don't remember the boys in my neighborhood having this particular truck in the 60's, but I do remember playing with the Tonkas in the snow (and heat and rain). Watching you give these old rust buckets new life takes me back to my childhood, but the process and problem-solving are also fascinating to watch!

While I like watching you work and am amazed at your skill, alot of what you're doing is more remaking more than restoration. But I do appreciate your attention to detail and hard work. ✌🇨🇦👍💯♥️

These are real toys !, ones that we as kids could have fun building roads and stuff with !, I had one of these plow trucks, would push the dirt around and make roads, had the companion road grader also, the drag-line power shovel !, not like the flimsy plastic toys of today that don't even hold up over time ! Great job and video !

This is a pretty cool channel. I remember these old metal trucks. They are so much cooler than the cartoonist plastic tonka crap of today. It must be so satisfying to get to the end of each reto project.

Another magnificent restoration approved by the one and only Beaker! The work in those homemade tandems alone is worthy of its own video. About the only other place you’ll see these great old Tonkas looking this good is on an old episode of “Gumby.” Bravo!

Always like what you do to these toys from my childhood, especially when you manufacture new pieces. I also get a chuckle from the little stuffed figures you have in the pieces. Keep up the good work.
