There are so many unique styling cues on this 59. I think it's one of best looking cars of the era. The tail lights are sometimes referred to as lipsticks lol. If you can find more wagons please feature them because they are under appreciated. Thanks for your hard work Lou! 👍

In the fall of 1958, my father made the salesman's month at Parrish and Clark Dodge. He ordered a 1959 Sierra Custom Spectator station wagon. It was the car that started my love affair with station wagons, as well as the first car I ever drove. It was red and white - same scheme as the car you are presenting. Mom was in on the deal. The car had, I believe, every available option. Had childproof rear door locks, power windows, radio, swivel seats, A/C [front AND rear], power brakes, power steering, 383 engine, dual exhaust, auto transmission, speed minder, towing package, 3.31 rear gear ratio [sure-grip], Mirror Matic mirror, right and left visor mirrors, dual outside mirrors [driver side remotely adjustable] luggage rack, 3rd row seating, red rubber floor mats [with Dodge crest], windshield washers [foot pump operated] and a clock. That's all I can remember. Dad nearly fainted at the invoice - it was over $4K. Mom wouldn't back down. We went, as a family, on many vacations in that beauty. My sister finally wrecked the car in 1974. Bent the frame badly, but sis was unhurt. The car had about 160 thousand miles on it and parents didn't think it was worth repairing. It was like losing a member of the family when it went away. The car you are presenting all but brought tear to my eyes, Lou. Stunning vehicle. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!

The last car my father bought in life was a solid dark blue 1959 Sierra Custom station wagon. This video brought back many memories: my Mom accidently closing the tailgate window on my little brother who was hanging out the backend. He always held a grudge for that one. The 800 mile road trip to Carls bad Caverns with my paternal grandmother forever hanging onto the right side sun visor like an orangutan holding its hands in the air. It was Granny's way of telling my Mom she was going too fast. And Morgan, my Dad's boxer, who one day vented his frustration over the loss of Dad by tearing up every inch of the Dodge's upholstery, anything he could sink his teeth into.

Beautiful wagon, and his assorted Exnermobiles in the collection too. Growing up in the 70's everybody remembers sitting in the "Way Back" to get away from 'the grown up's" We had a Pontiac Bonneville Safari Wagon (65?) and later, a '67 Ford Country Squire. I remember me and my best friend sitting on the tailgate with our bare feet dangling over the pavement, as my old man drove us to the dump - so much for that Safety Equipment - but we survived. We were Car Crazy kids back then, and is it any wonder the way American Iron was styled at the time?

The front of this car, to me, says "Mad Dodge! Mad Dodge!" The taillights look like red plastic drinking glass dispensers in a restaurant. Dodge loved those and reused them on the 1961 Polaras. The green color on this car is called Aquamarine. Code XE-you can see that on the tag. X is Pearl. I've always loved the design of the 59 Dodge. You don't see many of them any more. Thanks for featuring it.

A little point of order - The "Spectator" moniker" indicated the 3rd row seating - Sierra and Sierra Custom was the trim level. Also, swivel seats WERE available. Dad ordered them when he ordered our '59 Spectator in the fall of '58. The little round knob to the right of the speedometer was originally a speed minder. it had numbers to 10, as I recall. You pointed the pointer of the knob toward a number and it would flash the parking brake warning light when you reached the assigned speed. 6=60, 7=70, etc. The one in our car didn't work well, so dad had the wiring disconnected. The numbers on the bezel faded with age.

It's been a long time since I've seen a wagon like that....when I was a kid in the 60's it was common to see those big wagons running around....and I dig those Belch fire fins. Back in those days I had two aunts and uncles on my dad's side with 59 Mopars...one Dodge and one Plymouth, both four doors and my mom's folks had a 59 DeSoto four door. The front end of that wagon is somewhat Edsel like.....It's so big and crazy looking, nowadays it's cool. Although back in the day I would have thought anything but cool.... Great video....thanks. Edit: Is that a raised block 361?

Hi Gods own Drunk, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Aunts & Uncles car :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, It is a 361, however I'm not sure what a "raised block" is, Lou
@godsowndrunk1118
@godsowndrunk1118 2 жыл бұрын
@@loucostabile Throughout the 60's/70's the 361, 383 and 400 were know as the BB big blocks and 413, 426 and 440 were the RB's, Raised blocks....raised to accommodate the longer stroke crankshaft. That's the general rule... however, in 58/59 the 383 had started out in the taller, wider raised block...don't know why. I hadn't known that the 361 was available in 59 till seeing this video. When the hood was opened, I noticed that the engine looked wider than the later 383 and more like a 440, so wondered if the 361 first started out as the raised block also....? As a young guy , I assumed that all 383's were the same, but my cousin, who inherited our grandparents 59 DeSoto found out the hard way that there were two different 383's when he went to rebuild the engine and the rebuild kit for the later 383 he'd purchased didn't fit.... bearings and rods were all different. This ends today's lesson.

The fabulous green spectrum on full display, a Chrysler touch. My Dad, in 59 bought a 57 De Soto, and green green green was the color. In New Zealand we had them RHD assembled here and in Australia, arriving in giant boxes. BUT, in New Zealand, we often also got end of lines, so these Plymouths and Dodges and De Soto's could be bits and pieces of all three lines. Dads had the giant tail fins, of the 56 Plymouth. And the De Soto sharks grill, so sought after by hot rod's. It had the lever on the dash for auto, and a small V8. So a De Soto with Plymouth body. Green....

Okay Lou you did surprise me with this as you showed up in my home state in the city of Minneapolis! I live about 45 miles from there and once went to the famous "Back to the Fifties" that Randy Guyer talked about. The car you showed is a lot like the Dodge Custom Royal Lancer. I saw one of those at the "Back to the Fifties." Those cars were also known as the Dodge D-500, the top racing car for the Dodge brand during those years. I remember telling a bunch of high school kids that the 1959 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer was my favorite classic automobile. However, every brand has had lots of cars crushed, not just the Dodge cars!

We had one, not the custom, a base model I guess. Dad paid 450.oo for it in like 1970? He customized it by painting it battleship gray and black, with a brush, no masking tape. And it really looked good. We had 6 people in it and luggage to the max. Still hit 100 mph on old 97 along side the Delaware river. Great old girl.

Great video. Those old MOPARS bring back memories...You mentioned Beaver and Wally of Leave it to Beaver. Their TV dad, Ward Cleaver, never drove a station wagon. From the '59 season he drove a 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, and 1963 Plymouth Furys all 4 door hardtops. Wait, I think the '60 was a sedan. Enywho.. in the first two seasons Ward drove a '57 Ford Fairlane 4dr sedan. The Ford in the first two seasons may have something to do with the studio which was Republic. When the show switched to Universal in '59 so did the cars. I'm just full of useless information.(-; Thanks for posting have a blessed day!

Actually I LOVED sitting all the way in the back. And, my dad's wagon... didn't have a third seat. I just sat of the floor back there amongst the camping gear... the tent and the sleeping bags and ice box and boxes of food. ANYTHING to get away from my sister in the back seat :)

Lou fantastic review as always. I say thank you for including a station wagon amongst your car reviews. Station wagons were essential in the lives of all of us now over 65. In fact a station wagon was where I first watched TV in a car. Some friends of my parents had one Pontiac Safari station wagon circa 1967. It was a scorching summer day and returning from the beach. We got into a horrific traffic jam. Well , we the kids were left behind the bench seat with a battery operated Color TV watching Huckleberry Hound and Bullwinkle munching on Cracker Jack and Oreos. Outside about 92F and humid, but we were encapsulated in AC to the comfortable tune of maybe 65F; As it were on the very lap of middle class American luxury circa 1968. We all fell asleep and woke up to find our parents listening to Ray Connif’s Singers and Mantovani. LOL please find one of those Pontiac Safari Vista cruisers and let’s us see it again in one of your wonderful reviews. Stay handsome!

Wow! That car is amazing! Remember when cars actually had style? GM has abandoned styling for at least 25 years and Mopar has been nearly 30 years. Today we have bread boxes on wheels with some dreadful front end detailing and weird tail lights that don't look good. And Honduh SUV's look like they have Conestoga wagon wheels as tires because they are too tall and too narrow and set in far too much on the body. This is one sorry period for automotive design.

30 yrs of no style for Mopar? The Prowler? PT Cruiser may be old hat now, but 22 yrs ago she lit the world on fire. The new Challenger looks fabulous & is a good tribute to the original. & id like to think my '93 LeBaron Convertible is quite a charming car, as well :) oh..& the Viper is under your 30 yr 'no style' umbrella, ahaha.

Gracious living takes to the road. C H R O M E What's that spell? Gracious Living. Good Gracious. Thatsa lotta chrome, Louie. 🤣 Always a treat when you find a cool station wagon. 👍 Our family of five had a 59 Olds wagon. Fortunately no third row seat. It had a color changing speedometer, green, orange, red. Dad was too cheap to get AC, so trips in the summer meant all the windows down. Like driving in a tornado.

Thanks , Lou & all.. great DODGE WAGON ,METC. INTERESTINGLY,My Family had the 1959 CORONET WAGON 9 PASS/ rear Facing ( yes, some of my four younger Siblings rode rear facing ) / ps,PBrakes/ V8// TwomTone/ Radio/ Deluxe Wheels..I Did drive the Wagon a lot, Amtlugh Transmission/ Car/ Brakes in the Day!! BUT I NEver , WORKED OR serviced it?. I generally in second Seat; until,I started Driving in 1961,***etc. Oddly, even being a young car GUY, I Did not want the 59Dodge: though my area did have a couple of performance *Station Wagons ( 427 Fords, &/Chevy/ by 1962 /3 or so)… AND, fortunately for me , with THE low status of non-HEMI Station Wagons( & my Dating Life) Dad found a 1954 Ford( 57 engine/ **customized ) for me to Drive / Date/ & impress the locals at, Service Stations …..Odmcourse that 54 Ford Customizwd started my Car “ Fascination “…….
