These turn up at gun shows sometimes. I had the back model when I was a kid. Seems like the real ones would be of sterile nature but maybe not. Great upload!

I recognized that instantly from the thumbnail and had to click. I remember my father had this and often used it when fishing. I later bought some cheap copy from a flea market but it felt cheap too. If i needed this, i'd find and buy it but am too happy with my Leatherman. Your pronunciation was pretty good for a foreigner. Sorsa means a drake and Koski means rapids.

@@Leviathan-mj8gi Hopefully month is not too long to go into a more detail. Sorsakoski would literally mean Duck Rapids. Why does it have a silly surname? Almost all Finnish surnames are very new, and people mostly had a free choice on choosing what their surname would be. Most of them were named after the place they lived in, so my guess is some dude lived in a place that had a river and ducks.

I used to have one of these, but it was slightly different. The handles were black, and the blade was stainless steel with serrations on the spine. I bought it from a flea market in the UK in the late 90s, and it was sold as a fishing knife. The blade was a tight fit in the handles to prevent flipping, but a few swipes with some sandpaper in the handle slots and it worked perfectly. The handles and latch were identical to the ones on your knife (except in black instead of orange)

My granddad had these stored in a shelf (we live in finland) you were pretty close on the pronunciation. it would be said Pear-teh-met SOrsa-Cos--ki. I guess. close enough lol

@@cutlerylover the finnish language messes me up too. If you want to challenge yourself just try pronouncing anything with a y, ä, or ö. Ive been here 4 years and i have a hard time.

I had a similar Balisong when I was a kid. I remember the word Finland on it. The on;y differences it had, was the handle that was similar contoured only one slab, the other was straight if I'm not mistaken, and the blade was a full flat grind, but can't remember if it was drop poion or clip point. The steel probably was a stainless steel, with mat finish on it. It also had, the exact same closure system.

The Garcia people ( the same ones that sold fishing reels and such) used to sell these years ago before all the butterfly knife hoopla. They were widely available in the USA, and not anything secret. I have an identical one sitting right here I gave maybe 8 or 9 dollars for. I think that was retail or right at it. The handles are nylon meant to reduce weight in your pocket. The blade is a very sharp superior piece of good quality steel. This were definitely NOT made to be flipped open rapidly. I also have an original butterfly knife my father brought back from his military service from overseas. It is definitely made for flipping open. The Hackman Garcia knife is made for hunting and outdoor use and not for spy killing. Ken Warner wrote in The Practical Book of Knives a page or two about the Hackman Garcia outdoor knife

I owned one of the Japanese knockoffs. I purchased it from Atlanta Cutlery back in the early 80's for, I believe $4.99 or 5.99. They advertised it as their "cheapest model" and it was! It had yellow handles and what looked like a fish scalier on the spine of the blade. The knife was really sharp and really light weight. But as with most childhood acquisitions it was lost between moves or somewhere in the back yard. I've thought of replacing it but never was able to find a path. Thanks for the renewed interest, because what I really need is another pocket knife. LOL

We had a few of the originals around the house when I was a kid. Bought a few of the reproductions a few years ago. The originals feel like they have much stronger handles, the new ones feel like they might just shatter (but supposedly they are the stronger of the two). Very good knives, if used together with common sense. Don't go out chopping or batoning with them. As for the weight, the CIA would have gotten more out of a traditional puukko of the same weight.

I didn't know this until now, it use it as a light edc. I don't beat the hell out of it because i like the way it handles and comfort not to mention the lock on it is amazing it is still in good shape and i've never sharpened it, My step dad got it for me when i was like 12 or 13 i'm 17 now and respect the way i use knives a lot more than i did when i was 12. I carry this knife and a cheap S&W extreme ops one for a beater.

Jeff, have you ever reviewed the “Side-Winder” Balisong from Super Knife? It’s a weird budget knife from China with flat handles that fold out from the flat part of the blade side to side instead of top to bottom like traditional balisongs. I’ve also seen it referred to as the “Flapjack Flipper.”

COOL, my POP's got me 2 of these butterflies back in the early 80's . There labeled HACKMAN FINLAND. I STILL GOT THEM, A VERY TREASURED PART OF MY KNIFE COLLECTION. Got turned onto to butterflies after watching The BIG BRAWL with JACKIE CHAN at the Drive in Theater. Thanks a lot of GOOD MEMORIES 👍👍👍👍😎

You say the lock is very secure because the handles would have to break, but with apparently unlined plastic handles that seems quite likely. It looks like the swivel pins are located only a fraction of an inch from the end of the handles, exactly where breakout would take place. Particularly since 1960s plastics weren't anywhere near as tough as those we have today.

Have the exact same knife, except it says “Fiskars Finland” on the handle and “Fiskars Stainless Finland” on the blade. I’ve had for 35 years and came across it used…Yours is the closest match I could find, am wondering what year mine was made, or any other info…thanks (Long Island, New York)

this is what I heard about these knife balisong or butterfly blade, or batangas knife The name "balisong" is derived from barangay (village) Balisong, part of the municipality of Taal, Batangas province, which along with the neighboring barangay Pandayan, were the original manufacturing centers of the knives in the Philippines.

Balisongs can be more robust that folders so an idea of scandi-balisong seems like a great option for a compact outdoors knife. Too bad in my country there is a 9cm blade length limit for balisongs 😔

I had an original Hackman knife and the handles were WAY too tight to flip when I got it, so I wrapped the blade in tape and forced the handles closed on the blade and put the whole thing into a pot of boiling water for a while and that loosened it up enough to flip. I think I paid about $15 for it back in the day.

ive seen and actually handled one of these before. I am a former tsa officer and was looking at bags on my xray when a bag came on screen. i was sitting there looking at it because something looked odd. i thought i saw a knife without a handle. so i reran the bag and sure enough there was a blade but no handle. so i called the bag and had to check it. thats when i found the weird rubber/plastic fold out handles. needless to say i had never seen one before much less knew it was this.

You can keep them in your private collection as “curios.” The cops in PA don’t really hassle people about their knives. They only care if you’re carrying it while committing a crime or acting suspicious.

Haven’t heard about flipper or gravity knives ever being a problem in PA. You can legally carry pretty much anything here except autos.

there are sanitized versions of this knife with black handles and no markings on it ..or occasionally "stainless china" ..but obviously much better than average steel and the stamping looks iffy

Yeah I got a lucky find as well please look at my KZfaq video I was at a pawn shop and I bought a bundle of knives for 50 bucks which is a lot more than I wanted to spend and I found a 1970s these butterfly knife that looks just like that one but it's black and stainless Taiwan and I was completely mind blown that it's worth $180
