this is a remake of a video i made two years ago, this time with good quality. i even added two new clips. i reused some clips from my old video since they came from 1 hour long videos, so i just reused them.
This video is higher quality, has no fading transitions, and has some extra goodies ;)

As much as it kills me, i missed some movies here and there, some with great balisong scenes. I should have done more research when remaking this video. Perhaps someday a remake.

Some people, may say "YOU DIDNT LIST THE MOVIE AT insert time here. WHY YOU NO LIST?!?!?!" If i appear to not have list a movie, thats because the clip(s) before it (which do have the names listed above) are from the same damn movie. It's not fucking trying to play goat control, why can't you figure that out your damn self.

copperjarhead Yeah a lot of my friends from the U.S. complain about that too. I wish people would look at the numbers more. Because at that point folding knife laws make no sense and gun laws make a little less sense sometimes. In my country handguns are so heavily restricted that they're basically banned and yet people get killed by them nearly every day. It would probably be more productive to crack down on the black markets where people buy them illegally.

Most of them are only doing very basic opening/closing moves; but very fast, so it looks good on the silver screen. I didn't really see any aerials, rollovers or other semi-difficult moves.

To be fair, that's a double bladed balisong. That's much more difficult to use than a normal balisong without slicing your hand open. so opening it this way would be a far safer option than trying to be fancy.

Flipping a balisong/butterfly knife, in all these fancy ways (the movie actors of course most of whom doesn't really have long experience so this is not about technique, just the nature of balisong trick itself) is really just for show and entertainment for self or others. like playing tricks with a yoyo. It doesn't mean you are better or faster with a knife in a fight. Against very novice people I guess it has certain...intimidating factor? The real benefit of having a balisong/butterfly knife (now it is legal again in NY, as long as blade is equal to or under 4 inches). Is that 1) when closed it is very safe, you can put it in your pocket and run and not worry about falling and stabbing yourself accidentally. 2) you can easily and safely open and close the knife with one hand fast (yes safely, there are 2 handles, one of them if you hold and spin all u want even as a novice you can't cut yourself, provided u don't accidentally drop it / throw it, duh 3) because the mechanics of which is so simple, it is very easy to maintain, rarely malfunctions and easy to fix/tweak (needing to fix is very rare). While something like a spring knife are much more likely to malfunction which can range to annoying to dangerous. other folding knifes typically requires 2 hands etc... butterfly knife just got this really bad criminal vibe reputation from Hollywood.

Well, think about how military cadets flip their guns around for show, they clearly practice it a lot to be that proficient, and that's why it's so rare to see them drop their guns. Why do you think that they flip the guns? Its so that they never drop it, because if they can flip it around and spin it without dropping it, it makes it much easier to hold onto it when you arent flipping it around. Because you cant drop your gun in a firefight. Similar to butterfly knives, I guess.

Hollywood treats it like a joke weapon, but not like how it's a joke irl. In movies, it's an actual weapon that characters do funny stuff (like act intimidating by doing tricks) with. I love that everyone in the comments is complaining about how basic most of these openings are when more then half of the clips are from fight scenes. Like do you expect them to just wait to fight you for the 15 seconds it’s going to take you to complete your little routine?

Handle switch, takes one second Y2K, takes one second Y3K, takes two seconds Zen rollover, takes one second Even a more complex one like the behind the eightball takes four seconds It’s not that they’re easy or anything I have a problem with, it’s that every single movie here almost exclusively uses the double rollout or basic open and it gets boring, sure they can’t spend a whole lot of time to learn balisong tricks just for one scene, but it would be nice to have some diversity with the tricks

Fun fact thomas hane actually stabbed the Russian because the props guy was flirting with a girl and forgot to switch out the butterfly knife with a retractable one, but the guy had been a wrestler before so he he was used to being hurt and staying in character, the kept the scene he only asked for super glue so he could finish the fight sequence

I'm 31 now. I can't believe I used to carry one in my bag when I was in highschool cause I didn't want the "tough guys" or any bullies to belittle me. But I haven't owned one since I lost it but I've learned a lot of flipping just naturally cause I used to play a lot with it at home, even now I can imagine the knife in my hand and how it moves exactly when I flip it. Doing tricks aren't necessary during a hostile situation. Most people would use the simplest or fastest opening because of the incoming danger and adrenaline rush to do everything quickly.

I mean to be fair it took me a day or two to learn the double rollout efficiently, but with some of these movies budgets they should hire someone to teach them the correct way to flip. I mean once you got the basics if you actually commit to practice they could probably be doing helixs in a month or even maybe 2 weeks

Watching this as a young Asian man made me realized how poorly Hollywood portrayed Asian men back then. Portraying us as weak in some scenes and abusive or evil in others. I’m glad things are changing now. Although it’s different for sure in how they portrayed us but still overall more negative than positive.

Definitely cool; it's like one of life's essential skills - know how to drive a gear car, know how to keep it up for more than 30 seconds, know how to flip a balisong knife. I'm working on it, I'll get back to you once I've had the stitches inserted. It might be an idea to use one of those blunt trainer things, still, you learn fast, using the real thing.
