Here is a very nice example of quality electronics from the 1960's. This is the Tektronix Type 130 L-C Meter used for capacitance and inductance measurement. Let's see if it will still measure accurately! Grab a snack, sit back and enjoy! For links, click the SHOW MORE tab below.

I just can't imagine the skill and knowledge necessary to turn an amplifier into a beautiful work of art. Just incredible. I thought the electronics of the early to mid 20th century were pieces of art. Then I saw your amplifier. Man, I would love to have the skills to say, "Ya know, I have a pretty nice set of speakers. Think I'll design and build a custom amplifier to get the best possible sound out of them. Oh, and maybe I'll make it look like an amazing piece of artwork that will inspire envy into every audiophile ever born."' To heck with McIntosh... I want a Carlson!

Amen to that bro! It does have a nice ring to it too... I want a Carlson specialty custom designed amplifier built for automotive use to hook my old school set of Sony Xplod 12" Subs up too. These are the Sony Xplods that were made back in the day when Sony actually cared about their audio division and made really good quality audio equipment, car stereo, subwoofers, speakers in general. They would sound so amazing if they were hooked up to a Carlson Tuned Custom Designed Amplifier specced (yes i checked and that is a real word and the correct way to say spec in that meaning :) )and tuned just for those specific speakers. Wow imagine if companies sold products these days with the amount of love, dedication, care, and attention to product spec tolerance and quality. Oh the dream.

Mr Carlson! I had a "Mr Carlson was right!" moment the other day... I was standing playing my electric guitar plugged into my amplifier when I decided to play a drum track on my phone, hooked up to some powered monitors. When I plugged the phone into it's charger, i was holding it near the guitar pickup. My amp went BUUUZZZZZZ! Unplugged it, no buzz. Did it again, buzz! I said out loud... "Mr Carlson was right! Damn switch mode power supplies are REALLY noisy!" Just though I'd share.

I have a 130 l-c in similar condition. I have a few 500-series power transformers (among other parts) I was able to rescue from scopes that had been parted out 20 years ago from scopes in area high schools. I live not far from where Tek started. Tek donated a lot of their development products to nearby schools in Oregon over the years.

That homemade amplifier you built looks like some McIntosh amplifier quality, wow very exquisite! Possibly even better than McIntosh as I know how much care you put into your circuit design and use quality parts you have tested and verified in spec. Honestly Mr Carlson your workmanship and quality control is so magnificent, it has to be the best I have ever seen or even read of! If you made a line of amplifiers to sell to the public market I bet that it would sell like Hotcakes and be valued in the thousands of dollars range@

As a design engineer of Tektronix logic analyzer probes for microprocessors, I was blessed to have the use of a Tek 130 L-C Meter. Having minimum capacitive loading was very important for the instrument probes I was designing, and this meter was so useful in helping me validate my designs. Where else can you find a capacitance meter with 3 pF full scale? No where else that I've seen, before or since. I imagine Tek could still sell them today, perhaps in an updated FET-based design.

WOW ! WOW !! WOW !!! .... Such pride and workmanship that went into that test equipment, it is so obvious when you popped open the case... SERIOUSLY You don't see anything like that in todays electronics they're more likely designed to either fall apart and/or not be serviceable. I hope that people will wake up to this mentality and stop it! The most recent *MAKE magazine* featured a story on the right to repair and it's equipment like this from the 1960's that should be the inspiration !!!! Got to go on a high school field trip to the Tektronix subassembly plant in Tualatin OR in the 1970's. My favorite part of the tour was seeing the wave solder operation! Another thing on the tour was seeing this poor assembly tech sitting at a workstation with a huge barrel of small resistors bending the leads and placing them on a board by hand. I asked him if had to do that all day long and he told me that others rotated into the job every two hours. It was a fun day!

I also got a Sencore Powerrite pr57, which appears to have some sort of leakage test along with being an isolation transformer. As well as a bunch of CRT testing equipment that I need to find someone who needs lol. Learning more every day thanks to great videos from wonderful teachers such as yourself!
