I purchased this 1960 Tonka Pickup on eBay March of 2020. Overall condition was good when i received it. The front grille and bumper had rust and corrosion, the body was missing paint and rusting underneath. All parts were there and in good physical shape.
Starting off I removed the hub caps and whitewalls, the white walls were extremely brittle from age and were destroyed upon removal. However, the hub caps had very light surface rust and looked great. Removal of the tires required using a Dremel tool to shave off the peened surface of the axles. Outside of being dirty the tires were in excellent shape, the axles themselves had lots of heavy rust. After drilling out the tube rivets from the bed and removing rear fenders, the bed was able to be removed. Next the rivets retaining the front bumper were drilled out, this allowed access to the retaining tabs holding the chassis to the cab. With the cab removed the front grille was removed by pressing the headlights out from the truck. The easiest way to do this is to use a small socket. The cab roof and windshield are the last to be removed. The windshield is extremely dirty but in great shape. All of the metal tabs were hammered flat and any dents straightened at this time. Restoration started with sandblasting all of the body parts. Followed by using a wire wheel on the axle shafts, grille, and bumper. The body parts were then powder coated and baked at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. The axle shafts, grille, and bumper were nickel plated and polished along with the hub caps. The hub caps only needed to be polished on the polishing wheel, this gave them a great shine. The factory wheels, headlights and windshield were washed thoroughly with soap and water. With all the parts cleaned up, and replacement parts on hand which included, axle nuts, tubular rivets, whitewalls and decals, the reassemble could start. The body was carefully reassembled, new rivets installed, retaining tabs carefully bent back. Reinstalled the axle shafts, wheels with new whitewalls and hub caps. The final part of the restoration was to replace the factory decals. Overall I was extremely happy with how this restoration came out. Honestly my favorite one to date.

This was the color of our Dodge van when I was a kid. It always reminded of the color of the inside of a Three Musketeer candy bar. I loved that van. Thanks for the restoration color!!

I would way to temped to get a 3d printer and add a basic interior (seat, floor, dash, steering wheel). I know it wouldn't be a "true" restoration, but I would do it so that it wouldn't require new holes.

Good work. And I'm glad you changed the color. You may know this, you may not. From 1958 till, if I remember right, 1962 most of the Tonka pickups were that "gold" color. That gold color was the most common. I have 2 in my collection. I see that color everywhere.
