My mom liked Sergio Mendes which put him right into old peoples music for me.

I love Forever Changes by Love. It's a great album and I think it's on the same musical level than Pet Sounds and Sgt. Peppers.

Donovan was a super star! I still listen to his music just about everyday.

It was listening to Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 on the radio when I was a small child of maybe six or seven years old in the 60s that fueled my love for Brazilian bossa nova and jazz today -- some 55 years later. Thanks for adding the group to your list!

The only complaint I have with Caroline No is that it's too short. I love the live version from In Concert with the flute solo between verses.

Village Green is right up there with Ogden's Nut Gone Flake as one of my all time favorite albums. Odessey And Oracle is right up there as well. Hung Up On A Dream is one of the greatest records of all time.

"Begin" by The Millennium from 1968. Definitely. Everytime. It's on par with "Revolver" and "Odessey and Oracle" :D

What a string of albums this was, some famous, some very obscure. I played Wheatstraw Suite a lot in the autumn of '68 but never knew anyone else who had heard it. The Magic Garden was the 5th Dimensions greatest album and a Jim Webb extravaganza, with all those surprising micro bridges between the songs. Sunshine Superman was the new Donovan of 1966 and full of allusions to Tolkien, fairy tales and Cass Elliot. The zombies monster hit, Time of the Season was a callback to their original late '64 sound on an album that was pure 1967 and so Beatlesque. Everything here was great.

11:18 - 'Next band we have, The Searchers... The 2nd best band from Liverpool. First band obviously being... Gerry & The Pacemakers.' I nearly fell of my chair, laughing so hard on this remark. :-)

I knew about the Zombies, mostly their singles, but never really dug into their albums. What a blast the discovery of Odyssey and Oracle was for me. Great list. I have some of those records and you turned me on to some that I was unaware of. I would love to have seen one of the first two Country Joe and the Fish records. They are amazing and easy to relax to.

I remember seeing the Dillards album, and thinking it was too Country for me. Young & dumb. My ex introduced me to Donovan, I liked his non-Rock vibes. My ex's BFF introduced me to that Jefferson Airplane LP, but I never got it. Much later I was Very impressed by Lyle Lovett's version of Friend of the Devil.

I missed this video when it was first posted, you've made some great selections! I understand that every generation claims to have had the best music but I don't think that any decade's music represents its contemporary zeitgeist as well as the music from the mid to late 1960's. In 1966, Pet Sounds, Blond On Blond, Revolver, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme, Sunshine Superman, Fresh Cream, Fifth Dimension, etc. Followed up in 1967 by Sgt. Pepper, Days Of Future Past, Traffic, The Doors, Magical Mystery Tour, Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love, Disraeli Gears, Forever Changes, Strange Days, Surrealistic Pillow, Their Satanic Majesties Request, etc. The impact of these albums can't be overstated. To have been there and to have been young at that time, with those albums affecting your consciousness, along with the immense social changes was something that the following decades didn't have. All music feeds the soul and entertains but the music from the 1960's did more than that, it enlightened and brought people together in a way which may never be repeated.

The zombies album, every track is amazing! They had so many songs that should of been hits after hits. Do something on the band the lollipops, I would love to know more about them.

Enjoyable as ever Matt. Good selection. Some of my favourites feature inc Pet Sounds, Village Green, Odessey and Oracle and Rascals. The one other i'd mention is Forever Changes by Love. To me it's a classic full stop but could live in this category.

Matt, Another thought provoking, memory stirring episode. My own preferences tend much more to the rock side rather than soothing. But two 60s albums that popped into my head are Joni Mitchell's first and Bert Jansch's "Birthday Blues" which sounds like a blend of his solo stuff and Pentangle. I entered college in the fall of '66 and brought along PET SOUNDS and soon acquired REVOLVER - two of the best albums ever released according to Mojo and other mags. The guy in the room next door thought PET SOUNDS was piffle and played me Paul Butterfield's "East-West." Throw in Donovan's "Sunshine Superman," and I could live, thrive actually, on four albums alone.

"You Better Run" was a leftover single that didn't quite fit on the "Groovin'" album. I prefer "A Girl Like You" to "How Can I Be Sure?" by a hair. I would have included Gene Cornish's "I Don't Love You Anymore."

I like these kinds of shows because even though I grew up during this time and heard some of this music, I never purchased most of the albums because I was too young and was mostly hooked on the Beatles.

Nice list!! I would also suggest the Troggs "Love is all Around" and the Cowsills "I love the Flower Girl". The mighty mighty Velvet Underground had a soft side in songs such as "Pale Blue Eyes" and "I'll be Your Mirror." Lyrically and musically they rank up there near the top. If you have a chance listen to the unreleased gems "It's Alright the Way that you Live" and the majestic street breakup song, "Not that Sorry". Finally the Beatles had an amazing knack for soft rock with too many gems to name here. Let's just say that "Here There and Everywhere" is only tip of the Beatle iceberg of easy listening gems.

I might be the only person in America to say this, but? I’m no fan of pet Sounds. Genius? Maybe, but I’d rather listen to car songs. But that’s me. I had that Dillard record. It left my collection during the great purge. But to my experience, anything on the elektra 4000 series is worth collecting. Didn’t Doug firm Dillard and Clark with Gene Clark from the Byrds? Oh Sunshine Superman is one of my all time favorites. Season of the witch is a stone classic. But front to back it’s a keeper. American Beauty is the only dead record I kept. Village Green! The Kinks really were able to morph with what was hot at the time. The Rascals drummer is a vastly underrated musician. I like how can I be sure. But? My favorite is you better run.

Oh man, thank you for not playing the Days of Future Past closer. Almost the song that killed this record., not because it's bad, but because nobody plays anything else.....from their entire catalogue!

it's such a shame village green came out the exact same day as the white album, i feel like if it had been just a month apart then it would've been instantly recognized as the classic it is, along with their other works like something else and arthur getting more legacy recognition

Village Green is a great album but I think Arthur is their masterpiece. It has great songs and it's a little bit better than their previous albums.

How about an episode examining the early roots of progressive rock in the 1960s? A lot of prog rock took off in the 1970s but (depending on your definition) there were plenty of early precursors to the genre in the latter 1960s. Certainly the Hot Rats Zappa album qualifies as almost early fusion but Quicksilver Messenger Service, the German group Can, early Yes and there are plenty of other examples.

IMO the sixties music is about exciting and ground breaking ideas in Pop / Rock music. This Soothe the Soul idea was lame when I followed the bands / groups at the time. Sergio Mendes was for my parents, not my friends and me. I know you are looking in the rearview mirror but I had to say my piece. I lived through the times and followed the Beatles since Love me do on Radio Luxemburg in November '62. EMI pushed them like crazy and they were a big deal suddenly in the media if not the singles charts. Keep up the good work otherwise.
