This Album That Never Was is a fun look at the album the Beatles may have released had they pursued their proposal to record an album following Abbey Road. The formula was for John, Paul, & George to each get four songs and Ringo, two songs.

It would be nice to hear Beware Of Darkness with George singing the first verse, John singing the second verse, Paul singing the third verse and all three singing the last verse in three part harmony. I don't have Spotify, so I just listened to a DIY version of this album here on KZfaq, and I really can't see these songs meshing into a cohesive work. At least not in their current states - obviously production and arrangements and so on would be completely different in this alternate history - but each writer gives their songs such a consistent tone here that clashes so much with the others'. John's raw, indie sincerity; George's stuff that is hallowed and reserved but with a deep intensity (can you tell ATMP is one of my favourite albums); Paul's playful musicality; Ringo just being Ringo (gotta love him). I feel like they absolutely needed the chance to make their own unalloyed statements before ever beatling again. In my ideal world that would be in 71 or 72, with Billy Preston as a full member - but hey, none of that matters, does it. I'm glad they did what they did. Anyway, good job putting together something that works as well as it does, considering all _that!_

I took a different tact, decided they boys needed some time apart from each other so they each took a year off to release solo albums then got back together to make an album. Paul would have released "McCartney", John "Plastic Ono Band" and George a 1 disc "All Things Must Pass". They'd have held back some singles and used tracks that ended up on "Imagine" and "Ram".

Great cover - lovely pictures and written description, simple yet imaginative!!!! In terms of music: Ugh there's sooo much!!! They could have done some covers like Suzy Parker, Hi Ho Silver, I'll Keep It With Mine and a George version of I'll Still Love You. Lots of great material on The Black Album bootleg if I remember correctly. They could have had their own Black Album. Just to get some jamming and trading licks - raw and not as polished as The End from Abbey Road would have shown great insight into their influences and maybe harkened back to why they originally formed to be a rock band in the first place. I really like the addition of acoustic guitar in their music (like Help and Rubber Soulish). George could've used slide on Beatles songs. I don't know. Peace!!!

I call the album Why Let It Be? Here it is with each lead vocalist listed. A fun exercise. All songs from post-Beatles solo albums, except one each from Anthology 2 and 3. Why Let It Be? Side One: 1) Jealous Guy - John 2) Not Guilty - George 3) Another Day - Paul 4) Look at Me - John 5) Junk - Paul 6) All Things Must Pass - George Side Two: 7) If You’ve Got Trouble - Ringo 8) Give Me Some Truth - John 9) Come and Get It - Paul 10) Circles - George 11) Teddy Boy - Paul 12) Cold Turkey - John

Hi Matt, I have really enjoyed your segments on Albums that never were especially this one and the next one- Last Album, So after viewing this video last year Ive been seriously researching and having fun at the same time on what could have been this Album that The Beatles never released or as some "lost album", This album would have been released around the fall of 1970 or early 1971.In reality some of these songs were rehearsed during the Let it Be sessions or written in India and before officially breaking up. So here's the list of songs of The Beatles Lost (Double!!!) Album titled:The Beatles Jubilee(the original title of Paul's song Junk) 1.Come and Get it(Paul)*Had Paul not given it to Badfinger* 2.Early 1970(Ringo)*According to information in the book by Tom Doyle-Man on the Run, and Wikipedia it has John,George and Ringo in this recording and with a ploy by Allen Klein and John to lure Paul to also involve himself in this recording as The Beatles to undermine Paul's legal actions against Klein and the other three Beatles* 3.Hot as Sun(Paul) 4.Id Have You Anytime(George) 5.Suicide (Paul)*rejected by Frank Sinatra*6.Oh Yoko(John) 7.Woke Up this Morning(Paul) 8.The Art of Dying(George) 9.Long Lost John(John)*a song by Lonnie Donegan and performed by The Quarrymen* 10.Teddy Boy(Paul) 11.Behind That Locked Door(George) 12.Look at me(John) 13.Everynight(Paul) 14.Jealous Guy(John)*AKA Child of Nature* 15.Another Day(Paul) 16.It Dont Come Easy( Ringo)*Original title: You Gotta Pay Your Dues*17.Let it Down(George) 18.Gimme Some Truth(John) 19.Wah Wah(George) 20.Back Seat of my Car(Paul) 21.All Things Must Pass(George) 22.Junk(Paul) 23. Oh My Love(John) 24.Isnt it a Pity(George) 25.Maybe Im Amazed(Paul) *written in late 1969* 26.Run of the Mill(George) 27.Mind Games(John)*Original title:Make Love Not War* 28.Goodbye(Paul)*Previously recorded by Mary Hopkins* -And as a Single Beatles 45 (released circa mid 1970 or late 1970) A Side: Cold Turkey(John) B Side: Not Guilty(George)

I did something similar last year, except I used their solo albums. There was enough material in their 1970 albums for 2 discs, but this could've been a strong single disc album using the 4+4+4+2 format. I'd say it is better than Abbey Road. I let John open it and Paul close it. Ringo's songs were actually released in 1971, but I think they were recorded in 1970. Close enough. Ditto for Another Day. Mother - John Another Day - Paul My Sweet Lord - George It Don't Come Easy - Ringo Ooh You - Paul Look at Me - John Isn't It a Pity - George Isolation - John Every Night - Paul Wah-Wah - George Early 1970 - Ringo What Is Life - George God - John Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul

These instead are songs - like you know - that were written when they were still formally together (that we know were composed before the official breakup date), and that could make an album after "Abbey Road" without writing anything new: McCartney: "Maybe i'm amazing", "Every Night", "Teddy Boys", "Junk and Singalong Junk", "The back seat of my car", "The Lovely Linda" [and also wanting "Another Day", "Hot as Sun/Glasses", "The palace of the king of the birds"]. Lennon: "Child of Nature (Gelouse Gay)", "Oh my love", "Look at Me", "Gimme Some Truth (Give Me Some Truth)". Harrison: "All things must pass", "Wah-Wah", "I'snt a pity", "I'd Have You Anytime", "Let It Down", "Run Of The Mill" [and also wanting "Sour Milk Sea", "Not guilty", "Circles"]. After all, we would have had another excellent, albeit "approximate" - given the situation -, Beatles album ^^

Great idea - Here is my take on a "Beatles '73" album so the 4 John/4 Paul/4 George/2 Ringo mix was made from songs that were released by 1973. All are top songs on Spotify and not necessarily "personal favorites." I listen to this playlist trying to imagine the songs with all four Beatles involved. BEATLES ‘73 SIDE ONE Baby, I’m Amazed Instant Karma (We All Shine On) Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) Every Night Jealous Guy Photograph Isn’t It a Pity SIDE TWO Jet What is Life It Don’t Come Easy Oh, My Love My Love All Things Must Pass Imagine

I won't argue with your choices or the order (though maybe "All Things Must Pass" could be a closer). All great songs. Off the top of my head: SIDE A Instant Karma It Don’t Come Easy Another Day Hold On Man We Was Lonely Isn’t it A Pity SIDE B Early 1970 I Found Out (I could replace this with "Gimmie Some Truth" which was worked on with Beatles but I guess since it's from1971 - no dice). Apple Scruffs Every Night Love I Dig Love Maybe I'm Amazed

I find it very interesting how everyone chooses differently for what the track listing of such an album would've been. I probably wouldn't have thought too much about which were rehearsed and all, just which I preferred by the four. It's interesting how they'd decided to have four by each of the songwriters though. Never knew that, but it's nice to keep learning new things about my favorite band of all time.

I don't know what your musical background is, but that and plenty of time and work make for great videos. Two thumbs and two big toes up! A word about mixtapes. A play list does not compare. "Here, I put together this very romantic play list on Spotify! Oh, you don't have a premium Spotify subscription? Well, you won't be able to hear all of these. And don't lose the URL!" I do miss mixtapes, but I never have to spend time tightening up the a cassette using a pencil. And I don't miss that awful feeling when a tangled mess of magnetic tape is hanging out of the expensive cassette deck that Al & Ed installed. 🎶

I've heard that "It Don't Come Easy" was actually a publishing gift to Ringo from George (who is soul author of the song)...
@popgoesthe60s52
@popgoesthe60s52 2 жыл бұрын
That is untrue. That story has gained steam when the George lead vocal of the song came out as a bootleg. Ringo is on record saying that he had much of the song and lyric written and George added to the arrangement and obviously production.

By then, even four songs an album would not have been enough for George, or John or Paul for that matter. They were all quite prolific songwriters at that time. I remember George noting that problem in an interview. I also remember reading in Peter Doggett's book that various Beatles put forward vague ideas in interviews about how to move forward, including having maybe one Beatles album a year and then solo albums from the individual Beatles. But isn't it a pity, isn't it a shame, that they didn't seem to ever seriously discuss these proposals in person, at least after September 1969.

Oh my gosh! I get alerts when you put out a new video, but I never saw this one! So...a year later...I love this video! Over the years I've seen mockup Beatles albums, which I thought were pretty lame because they would include songs from the late 70's and in some cases even songs from the 80's. Your selection comes very close to what my selection would have been. Like yours, I would kinda stretch it to 1971. I would agree with most of your selections, but I would tweak it just a bit. Instead of LOVE, I would insert REMEMBER. ISN'T IT A PITY, instead of APPLE SCRUFFS. By the way, ISN'T IT A PITY was written in 1966. George wanted it on the Revolver album but John and Paul rejected it. ( Maybe because it was as good as any John or Paul song? Hmm). Instead of HOLD ON I would put IMAGINE. And lastly, I would replace THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING with OH WOMAN OH WHY. Could you imagine that as a Beatle song? I think it would be given heavy air play to this day. If I could add one song, it would be either WHAT IS LIFE or OOH YOU. The Beatles could expand on OOH YOU and maybe had three different lead guitars on it like on Abby Road. Or better yet add a piano. That being said, if your version was released it would probably be my third favorite Beatles album next to Abby Road and the White Album. If you are reading this one year later...I don't know if you can legally do this, but if you could make prints of your mockup Beatles album cover, I would buy one in a heart beat. Thanks for a great video

@@popgoesthe60s52 I just listened to the podcast of Beatles '70. You are a sequencing expert. You really hit it out of the park and on the head of a nail with the overall sound. Picking mostly their quieter songs makes this record really reflect their having left Beatlemania in the 60s and here we go with a new decade. The whole album sounds reflective, moody, and it would have been their most mature album together had it been their album together.

I have made numerous Beatles albums out of their solo material. This is one I made for 1970 many years ago... Side One: The Lovely Linda Instant Karma Maybe I'm Amazed My Sweet Lord It Don't Come Easy Junk Beware Of Darkness Working Class Hero Side Two: Every Night I'd Have You Any Time Love Oo You What Is Life Another Day Isolation My Mummy's Dead The album opens with the little snippet "The Lovely Linda" with the flowers in her hair - with that cutesy giggle at the end... and then blasts into the album proper with Instant Karma's drums leading the way. The first four full length songs feature John, Paul, George & Ringo with a strong track of their own which could have each easily been a hit single (which of course they all were in real life). Then they soften it up with Paul's lovely poetic tribute to "Junk"... before coming back with two powerful tracks from George and then John - to end side one. Side two open's with three beautiful love songs from the three Beatles that had been together since 1958 (first Paul, then George, then John). Next Paul continues the love theme with a much funkier take on the subject with "Oo You" - and then George adds on to that theme with his faster paced, lively "What Is Life". The love fest takes a sharp turn to the unrequited side of love with Paul's "Another Day"... and then goes deep and dark with John's "Isolation" as the album's closer. After 18 seconds of silence - John's "My Mummy's Dead" is the album's finishing touch - as a hidden track. The album has 14 full tracks (7 per side) plus a little snippet at the beginning... and another at the end. Released at the beginning of December, 1970... this Beatles album went on to be #1 for 11 weeks in both the U.S. and the U.K.
