It looks really good! I hate to say it, though, but I'm not as much of a fan of that Hammerite paint. I personally prefer a smoother look, but that's just me. You've done a great job yet again! :)

Looks nice! A tip for your metal plating: Polish the bare metal to a mirror finish before any plating, then a thin coat of nickel, maybe a light hand polish, then the chrome, as thick as you want (a car´s outside parts need it a bit thicker than some instruments). The part itself is much easier to bring to a perfect surface than the chrome, if the latter is on a slightly rough surface, you can´t polish that out. For a matte chrome finish a uniform blasting with glass beads should work. I once had to have a piece of brass to be chrome plated and I polished it to a mirror beforehand. When I got it back from plating it was absolutely perfect already, without any further work to be done.

Great tips thanks, Sthenzel! I'm only using a fake chrome kit which is the nickel kit you're talking about. I need to look into a real chroming kit but I'm not sure where to get one. I think the chemicals needed are too dangerous to sell to the public maybe. Either way, I'll take what you've said onboard, cheers!

another cool video! years ago, I had a friend who had a summer job at DisneyWorld in Florida in the accounting office. His job was to weigh the stacks of cash as a double-check on the counting machines; he said that they used the Mettler scales like you see in science labs, the ones with the glass doors

This is great, I wonder if it would work with modern money, or if the weight would be wrong? Also, I don't think "dismantely" is a word. Were you thinking both "dismantle" and "disassembly"?

Sure I will keep this in mind for the next one. Its replica chrome done with nickel anodes, but i'm looking into an actual chrome plating kit now. So you might see that on the channel some time soon.

The only kink i see is that you lubed the parts. You're not supposed to. Measuring machinery in that realm doesn't use conventional lubrication and it relies on a careful balance of loose tolerances, and oil that's added with the tip of a needle (as in, very little). Mostly because grime will get in those and gum things up. Learnt that the hard way with an elaborate and antique set of measuring devices that just wouldn't work. When i read into it, i had to take it all apart and clean stuff up (i was lucky to find an old maintenance manual for them, which was rare).
@RestoreIt
@RestoreIt 2 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right Aserta. I actually ended up only grease that one piece i show in the video. I'm going to clean it off when im next in the workshop. Its a good job I didn't feel like do any more. Thanks for the advice, much appreciated!

Why can't stuff these days be non-destructively disassembled like this? I'm amazed by its construction and at the same time, bitter about how much emphasis on serviceability was placed on its construction back then. These days, if something was built like that, it'd be assembled with rivets not intended to be removed. You'd be expected to toss it and go buy a new one.
