I don’t want to talk about anything other than the fact that this is just nothing short of classic. Period. The 1961 ( 19 freaking 61! ) NFL Championship game between the NY Football Giants and the Green Bay Packers. As I’m writing this I’m watching the players running out being introduced. Wow 🤦🏻‍♂️ This footage is EVERYTHING to a film junkie such as myself. To have the opportunity to watch a game from so long ago, I appreciate this so much. Thanks for uploading this.

jstube36 man! How in the heck do you have this? Did you have it on tape or reels? From your own home personal collectibles? This is really vintage footage, geez. The earliest game I had on tape to watch growing up as a kid was SB 13. My father taped a few classics from the 70s and 80s..so watching this is like gold to me lol.

What a post! I had the great privilege of becoming friends with the great Charlie Conerly during the last dozen years of his life. This was his last game. A modest, humble, classy gentleman who was beloved in New York. Not uncommon for people to applaud for him when he entered a restaurant in the 80's and 90's. A really handsome man, part native American, he was one of the first "Marlboro Men" dressed both in a tux, and as a cowboy. He appeared as such on a huge billboard on the Lincoln tunnel helix, and on the entire back cover of Life magazine. The players were not paid a whole lot back then, so this was a great gig for him. Immediately after the science started coming out about the dangers of smoking, he refused to do any more cigarette advertisements. At a late night get together uptown in the 80's, Charlie, Sam Huff, Joe Morrison, Paul Hornung and Tim Mara chatted about this game over drinks and laughs for about an hour. Unforgettable night for me. Charlie's wife, Perian, in addition to being gorgeous, was probably the first female sportswriter in the country. She is in her 90's now, and active. What an honor for me when they came up from Clarksdale, Miss.for my NJ wedding in 1990. RIP, Charlie, 2/13/96, you are fondly remembered and sorely missed. Thanks js, for this post.

Was a freshman at Milwaukee School of Engineering that year. We had a lot of east coast kids there, and they did a lot of trash talking as they headed home for the holidays, letting us Cheesheads know the'd rub our faces in the snow when they came back. But...not with the frequency that they do now. I have watched pro football for 50+ years, and anyone who can watch this game with runners bouncing and spinning off of much better fundamentally executed tackling back then, and watch now and not see the difference, is either blind or lying just to make some bullshit point that everything today is so much better than it was in the old days, which is just about as stupid as saying the reverse.

Watched the entire game. Great. I knew the Packers won but didn't know a thing about anything else. Stood out for me: The small size of Lambeau Field at the time (City Stadium) The fact that the two announcers Lindsay Nelson and Chris Schenkel, both play by play guys, each took a half. The incomplete pass on 4th down in the EZ coming out to the 20 (touchback) The fact that at least one NY Giant had no logo on his helmet. How sharp and crisp the fake handoffs and delayed handoffs had to be in those days. Beautiful. The 25 minute plus halftime. The fact that in those days, all the backs were asked to pass from time to time. All those great hall of fame names playing in this game. Not even one famous Green Bay sweep! That Boyd Dowler was quite a player...

Giants were going heavy and numbers on the line of scrimmage, so a lot of dives, draws, and traps. They run that quick trap with the G trapping the DE right next to him and the T down blocks so many times and the Giants can't stop it from going 4-8 yards per play. @@ronk4537 It had been invented, but it was too expensive. In the 1950's CBS wanted to televise I Love Lucy and then tape over it for other shows. Like the childrens show Romper Room. Lucy and Desi wanted to preserve the recordings. So they paid for the more expensive tape, called Apex. They retained ownership of the entire show, and all that went with it. Later they sold the show to independent stations to play. Thus inventing reruns. Also in 1960 Bing Crosby was part owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and had game 7 of the World Series taped. He also had part ownership in Apex, which was the tape used by himself and Lucy and Desi. It was lost for nearly 50 years.

This is also a Canadian feed. Not sure if it’s CBC or CTV but I am sure it aired in black and white because Canada didn’t go color until 1966. NBC aired big sporting events in color as early as 1954 but color videotape didn’t come in until 1958 and yes, it was expensive. Lack of interest in preserving anything for posterity was a common problem at the time, which is why all the leagues’ archives are weak. I worked for MLB years ago cataloguing their archives and the oldest color broadcast they have is the 1969 World Series.

He ran a different offense, you see the very active guards flying around to the points of attack, either trap plays or the Green Bay sweep. You see real bad numbers from the QBs of the era, Starr's accuracy was good, the receiving was poor by todays standards. Use of hands to catch the ball like a basketball and body control during the catch were lacking on both teams. Important stuff like time left and score are missing, an occasional shot of the scoreboard is about all you get.

He played defensive lineman on the varsity team; I was acquainted with him; and one time I gave him a ride to his Atherton home in my car when he missed the late bus (come to think of it, it was odd that Pat, as a HS senior, didn't have his own wheels; most did back then). A somewhat gregarious person, but humble, too, in that all the years we knew him, the topic of his father's fame was never brought up with me or anyone else I knew of at Woodside High. But then, Shirley Temple's daughter also attended the same high school at the time; so the high school had several additional students which had parents of acclaim; where those classmates were never boastful of their parents' prominence.

This was a CBC relay of an NBC telecast. (Perhaps no kinescope or videotape of NBC's broadcast exists) (Although CBS had TV rights in 1961 to most of the NFL's teams, NBC had rights to two NFL teams---the Pittsburgh Steelers and the old Baltimore Colts)---as well as the NFL Championship Game. The next year, CBS captured the first league-wide NFL TV deal, which included all regular-season, playoff, and championship games. I remember watching this game on our old Zenith B&W TV with rabbit ears. The local station carrying this game did not come in perfectly. Sometimes, there was a little snow in the picture, and at other times, there was ghost image where the image came in dimly to the right of the main image. My 5th and 6th grade team that year used an abridged version of the Packers' playbook with the sweep, trap, off-tackle slant, power off-tackle, the inside fold play, and many of their play-action passes.

You are correct to point out that they are one in the same facility, though Green Bay had a different City Stadium by the East High School up until 1956, where the Pack played some of their home schedule. Indications are that capacity at the time of this game was just under 39,000, with the name Lambeau Field brought into service when the team founder died in 1965. Now, Lambeau holds more than 81,000 and City Stadium, behind the high school is still operating as a facility, though it has artificial turf and the only original structure there is an equipment shed.

This brings back memories of watching (or trying to watch) football on TV in the '60s. Between the vertical hold messing up and causing the picture to start"flipping", and the picture fuzzing out so you needed to mess with the fine tuner or the rabbit ears (needs more aluminum foil), sometimes I'd eventually give up and just pull the footstool up, sit in front of the TV, and stop trying to go back to my chair. You had to remember to warm up the TV at least a few minutes before the game started too, or you'd miss the kickoff. Sometimes I'd just give up, turn it off, and go outside.

I would differ. Yes the game has changed since 1961. But I can say that the thrills and drama of NFL Football remains. Just look at last Sunday in Miami, The Dolphins had 4 seconds and needed a miracle TD to beat NE. The Pitch scene around the world was incredible. The Cowboys and Chargers also had thrilling late game wins. Now I agree many of the game's changes(mostly against the defense) has made the game a bit watered down. But I think most fans(including myself) can live with these changes as long as the drama of the game is not altered. It's still the greatest entertainment and experience money can buy. It's worth every penny.

@jstube36
@jstube36 5 жыл бұрын
The rating system can be misleading. It does not take into account game attendance. The Cowboys still play before sellout crowds in spite of the hefty ticket prices. The ratings system also does not account for the many who go to sports bars that carry NFL Sunday Ticket to watch games. And more and more are viewing and streaming games from online sources. And many today watch the games from their phone. As far as being the "No Fun League". The League has relaxed penalties for endzone celebrations. Now I do agree that the "taunting penalty" has no place in this game. But the game itself is still so thrilling. The drama is always there. especially now as teams make a push for playoff positioning. The old-adage still holds true. There is no drama like NFL Football Drama.
