Yea I remember how simple and basic those stations were as a kid as my uncle was a proprietor of a"gulf"service station in the early 60's...I'll never forget the smell of new tires or that service bay area of gasoline and such..also he also sold some bicycle tires with the"Goodyear "logo they were" slicks"and i had one on my"Schwinn stingray"bike boy those were the days my dad would take us out to go spend time out there on saturdays.. It was great being a kid back then..also I forgot the mention for the penny gumball machines or peanuts..or the old style refrigerator bottled coke machine outside.

People used to take pride. In their job no matter what the job was, most young men in 2023 would feel "above" a job like this

Back in the mid 70s I worked at a 76 station, a Business Man came in , He said Son get my windshield, check the tires and coolant by the time I get back from the bathroom, I did and He tipped Me $100. That's how much I made in a week.

Everyone romanticize the full service station. As someone who worked at one through college, different memories come back. Record cold weather, carrying the cash wallet. Any shortages came out of your check so no gloves....permanent nerve damage in both hands. $2 and scrape all the windows. Had a guy demand change a tire on his car while pumping the one gallon of gas. Multiple robbery attempts and all for $3.60/ hour. Ah, the good old days.

"The Man" got eight good years. Then came the Yom Kippur War and our portion of the blowback was the Arab Oil Embargo. Willing to do anything to cut prices, operators introduced Self Service and the traditional service station disappeared forever.

After the first "gas scare" of the early 1970s so-called service stations were going out of business left and right.

Can you imagine a company offering a responsibility like that to "a man in his early 20s" today? Interesting how things have changed. And $30,000 in the mid 60's would have been a fortune. LOL. My dad was making exceptional money in mining back then - $20,000/yr - and him and my uncle were accumulating rental properties. Couple of divorces wiped that out, but things were good for a while. My Father-in-Law ran a Texaco way back when. Gave out too much credit to businesses in the small town he grew up in. His friends and neighbors sunk him. Yes, young people, the world was A LOT better back in the old days.

My first "real job" in high school was a service station attendant ..wore that Standard uniform. After my time in the Army..it had turned into Amoco.

In Canada the gas station owners made more on the sale of chocolate bars then the gasoline. The margins were that slim.

In NY they were called American & later AMOCO because Esso & SOCONY Mobil were in NY Esso was Standard Oil of NJ & SOCONY Mobil was Standard Oil of NY so yet another Standard would be confusing

It surprised me, as I thought all full service gas stations where gone. But the State of New Jersey has them by law, as does some of Oregon. Those Atlas Bucron tires where a favorite of street racers of the time, as they were made of a softer stickier Butyl rubber and had better traction.

Big oils way to scam the little guy. These companies took these small businessmen to the cleaners and screwed them over every chance they could. My dad worked for Sinclair oil as VP of Sales and saw it first hand. He quit and worked for the Dept of Energy in the 1970's. The whole oil shortage was also made up by the oil companies and they kept tankers full of offshore and manipulated the price of oil.

37 cents a gallon for gas in 1965, what a rip off, back in 1969 I remember my dad paying 25 cent's a gallon for gas in Salem Oregon.
