I always love to include this trivia for the non-Buick people out there. The SR-71 Blackbird, world's fastest plane, used twin Buick Nailhead V8s for its start cart, which fired up the Blackbirds engines. Very nice Riviera BTW.

OK people admit it. How many of you when you saw this beautiful Rivera instantly made the connection to Patrick-Swayze's character James Dalton's 1965 Buick Riviera in the movie Roadhouse? A VERY iconic automobile driven by an iconic actor. Man O man that IS one beautiful Buick.

This car's styling design was so far ahead of its time! I remember my father's attorney friend had a black one virtually identical to this, and when he gets would come to our house in it when I was a kid, I would go out to the driveway and walk around it and drool in admiration! I thought it looked so futuristic at the time! Especially compared to my dad's Oldsmobile Delta 88! So glad you reviewed this great automobile! The owner should be proud of it.

THE most be beautiful car of the 60’s. I was at a car auction in the early 70s and a gorgeous 64 came across the block. The bidding stalled at 3,500. I COULD BUY THIS CAR! Never in a million years did I think I could afford anything at this classic car auction. I left my little brother and hurried to register as a bidder. Filling out the form, my brother found me and told me the Riv sold for $4,000. I was crushed. A couple of years later, I bought a 71 Monte Carlo which from a 3/4 view from the rear resembled the first gen Rivieras. Through the years I owned the 71,72 and in the 90s a restored 70. My one regret was missing out on that Gran Sport.

Beautiful craftsmanship & styling that doesn't exist in the generic plastic vehicles that are built today.

The 1965 Riviera was an awesome car. My first one was 13 years old when I got it in 1978. I've owned a total of three in my lifetime. In my opinion the 1965 Buick Riviera is the epitome of luxury musclecars.

I had a 65 Riviera for several years in the 1970s. Wonderful car to drive. Had it up to 130 mph a few times. 15 to 16 mpg on the road. Drove it from Denver to Chicago in 12.5 hours. A real eye catcher.

Tri fives, chevelle, c10, nova, camaro, vette, all populate my favorite cars but a 65 riviera is probably the most gorgeous car ever to roll on the road. Its classy and aggressive in a perfectly balanced way

The cars back in those days were beautiful works of art, unlike today where the emphasis is on technology not style.

Some of my earliest memories of life include my dad's 65 Riviera Gran Sport, infact that car impacted my entire life, as it gave me this burning desire to work in the automotive industry... 6 decades later, now past ASE certified and retired.

Previously, Buick used the "Riviera" name to describe any Buick that was a full-size hardtop...regardless if it was a Special, Century, Super, or Roadmaster. Bill Mitchell told his designers working at General Motors that the Riviera should be a cross between a Ferrari and a Rolls Royce. The 1963 Riviera was the first production car without framed glass in the doors. The 1963 Riviera shared its drivetrain with other full-size Buicks...but the body, chassis, cowl, glass, etc. were all unique. In 1966, the GM E-body was used for both the new Toronado and the redesigned Riviera (with the major difference being the drivetrain...but other fixed costs in engineering could now be spread out over a greater number of vehicles).

I also love this car! I spent a lot of time riding in one when I was a youngster. My dad owned one, a beautiful 1965 Reviera Grand Sport black with tan interior. I remember my dad saying way back in the early seventies that this particular car was going to be a collector item. I wish this car was still in the family!

Buicks were cool during this time. I bought a used 70 Buick GS 350 and drove it as a family car for 10 years and absolutely loved it! I sure wish I could have restored that car like I wanted to. Hopefully someone else has.

I first saw the 63 Riviera at the London auto show while I was stationed in England in the US Air Force. When I got home, I made up my mind to buy one. Could not afford a new one, so in 65, the local Buick dealer had a 63 on the lot and I was able to get a loan to buy it. It had the 401 cubic inch engine, 325 hp. It also had a 4 note horn, which was really loud in the tunnels of the highway in Colorado, from Golden to Central City. People who were in front of me would speed up when I used the horn while in the tunnels.

I started joy riding in my father's '65 Riviera when I was a teenager. You put your foot in it and you could feel the rear end rise up a little as the tires squealed. That torque was unreal. He gave me the car several years later, but I just couldn't live with 8 mpg, so I gave it back to the old man after a couple of years. Love the way it rode though. Quick, powerful and comfortable.

To me, this car is one of the 2 greatest designs of the era 1963- 1970, Jaguar XKE, Buick Riviera.

My Dad and Mom ordered a '65 Riviera GS in black with every available option. It's still my favorite car. I should have bought it from Dad when he offered it to me. fuel mileage was acceptable, if I could keep my foot out of the dual quads. Man would it run!

Brings back great memories my friend had a 65 Riviera GS with the dual quads it was a beautiful car until his girlfriend threw brake fluid all over the hood but it was still a beautiful car my other friend had a 1970 GSX in. Growing up in Flint, Mi my dad worked at the Fisher Body #1 plant on S. Saginaw St. Dad worked on the large Buick line. La Sabre, Wildcat, Electra 225, and Rivera. He torch soldered the rear deck plate at the bottom of the rear window after it was welded into place. Dad worked there from 1925 to 1967 when he retired.

Great pick to showcase. A truly beautiful, timeless design and 65 was the best of the three years with the clamshell headlights. This and the 66 Lincoln 4 door convertible are true icons.

FYI: You could get the dual quad option in '65, on the Riviera - without ordering the Gran Sport package. The engine itself is called the "Super Wildcat," and was also available in '64 and '66. You could even get the "Super Wildcat" on the Electra 225, in '64, and in the "Wildcat" line from '64-'66. Now you know.

Had to sell mine 9 years ago. Had extra option then this one, auto headlight dimmer on the dash, reverb for the back speaker, stock air cleaner and trumpet horns. Love this car. Tattoed it coming out of my arm.

My ultimate car. I once owned a 425 with the finned aluminum valve covers and the dual quad intake. I sold the engine and installed a 67 430 in my 65 skylark, topped with an Offenhauser dual quad manifold.

You really have had some great videos. Most impressive. This is when Riviera was a "Riviera" outside of the 1979-1985 model. This was a legendary personal luxury car that was in production for decades. They tried to recapture this car's essence in the 1995-1999 Riviera. They did not quite get there. very nice Riviera. This owner really has taken care of the car and invested in the car.

This is easily one of the prettiest post-war American car, scratch that one the prettiest post war cars in general built. They never did truly surpass it in my opinion the 63-65 was perfection, it's almost sinister, but extremely elegant.

i deff want this car in my collection. Me and my Brother are in a postion in life where we have a abilitiy to buy a handful of cars. Nothing but V8++, Diesel+ and up tho. We lovingly call it our (Last resort FOREST collection.) Currently in our roaster we Have a 2002 AWD Escalade 6.0, A 2016 Viper GTS And a overland 4x4 van project, but yes this Riviera is on our list mostly would be a "leasure vehicle" for sure until its time to upgrade to end times spec

Styling tour de force, and IMOP probably the best year and best model of Riviera ever - values seem to support that. Interestingly there's a camp that says the 66-67 were even better, but to me this is more pure sport, while the next gen was more swoop. Design language changed. A much better performer than same year T-bird, and I'm a T-bird fan. The bird did have dics, though (weighed 400 pounds more though too).

I have a 1962 Cadillac Coupe de Ville all original. Interior, paint and mechanicals and best of all it is totally rust free!. I am the second owner bought by me 21 yrs ago from the man who special ordered it from Lou Ehlers Cadillac on Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles. I have all service records from the original owner. Interesting subject?

Had a 73 Riv GS boat tail. Loved that car! My 1967 Sport Wagon has the same aluminum brake drums (in the back... has disc brakes in the front}. Some Buick fun facts - Buick engines were the only GM motors with the oil pump outside the oil pan (they were located on the front of the motor on the passenger side) - Buick is the number one selling car right now in China. Probably is why they're still around today. Happy Thanksgiving Jay!

Recently bought a standard model 65 Rivi for restoration, just finished trans rebuild, now the motor, this is my favorite year of the first generation ✌🏽

1st car was a Impala super sport. 327 engine was still a dud. Looking for a new car i saw a 63. Fell in love & wanted it no matter what. Had more, but still consider that the best car i ever had. Cousin rebuilding & can't wait to see it on the road again.

This car was the king of Ascot Park Figure 8 racing. Saw one race where the Buick flipped on its top upside down, when righted they restarted the race and the Buick which had flipped won the race.

Buicks 2 and 3-speed automatics were "Super Turbine" 300 or 400. In other brands of GM vehicles, the ST 300 was known as the Turbo HydraMatic 300 or Olds Jetaway. In other GM brands the ST400 was known as the TH400. What makes the Buick automatic transmissions "Super Turbine"? A Buick exclusive "variable pitch" stator in the torque converters. Electrically operated, the transmissions had a 2nd solenoid in the transmission in addition to the kickdown(passing gear) solenoid. There was a 3 position switch located above the gas pedal or in the throttle linkage. At idle, the stator switch was on, at part throttle and cruising, both switches were off. Under full throttle(floored), the stator and kick-down swit5ches were on. The "Super Turbine" transmissions were a Buick exclusive and not available in other GM vehicles. The "Super Turbine" 400 automatics came in Buicks from 1964-1967 and the S.T. 300 in Buicks through 1969 and the TH300 in Pontiac and olds from 1964-1969. Buick introduced the variable pitch stators with their Dynaflow automatics in the 1950's. The last generation of Dynaflow with a variable stator was the " Flight Pitch" Dynaflow, which incorporated 3 stators in the torque converters, each staged to operate at certain speeds. Chevrolet had a similar automatic they called the TurboGlide, an aluminum-cased automatic which externally looked the the aluminum-cased PowerGlide. PowerGlides thru 1961 were cast iron cased. Toyota copied the cast-iron PowerGlide, but made their ToyoGide smaller with an aluminum case. Buick DynaFlows and Chevy pre-1953 PowerGlides and 1957-61 TurboGlides didn't automatically shift gears but did have 2 speeds forward. The "L"(low) or GR(grade retard) were mainly for engine braking but could also be used for a quicker take-off.

Love the exhaust note. The rear door latch handles were a neat feature, but if you had a Bart Simpson in the back seat, they might have thought it would be fun to trip the latch while Mom or Dad was driving down the Interstate at 70mph. 😧 American cars were really hot in the 60's, Rivieras, Lincolns, GTOs, Road Runners, Cadillacs, Chargers, Mustangs, Camaros, Grand Prix, and even those Studebaker GT Hawks you mentioned.

As far as I can recall Saturn cars had bolt on door skins also have worked on VW Passats with bolt on panels . I would guess there were others who did this also not a bad idea in my book .I also had a 64 and it was hard to leave a stop sign without spinning the tires . Super nice car cheers .

Jay I saw on another channel that the door skin bolts on like that because during manufacturing they could adjust the door class and hinges easier and then the skin simply bolted on, these were the days before side impact beams

I drive a 1977 Buick LeSabre Sport Coupe, and it was inspired by the Riv Gran Sport. Even the body looks like a downsized Rivieria coupe from the 60s.. mine has a Rocket 350 which was stock but only offered for the Sport Coupe in 1977, mine is rebuilt with no emissions. It’s also a landau edition which was even rarer for the already rare 77 Sport Coupe. 1977 is also the only year in which they had improved performance suspension/handling and fast ratio steering. It’s also one of Bill Mitchell’s very last cars he designed.

The Riviera 65-70 are my favorite years. About the same for the Toronado.

It is such a majestic sculptured car. The only thing I did not like, for such a luxury car as it was I wish the instrumentation included an oil pressure, amp meter, and a coolant temperature gauge. The tach was a nice touch. I bet it was a real hoot to drive! I would not think the car was a uni-body car but a body on frame, which is always my preference. Super presentation! You dont miss a thing!

I miss mine I didn't sell it it's just sitting rotten in the garage I'm not going to sell it either I'll fix it up or I don't. This car is part of my personality.

These are proper cars, what we see on the roads today are just....vehicles, soulless such! I'm a huge MOPAR fan, but I've come to love all those old school Ford and GM as well! Born in '69, which was a good year, wouldn't mind mind garage full cars from that year, Charger, Super Bee, GTX, Camaro, Mustang.....might swap the '69 Charger for a '68, I like that one better and....Bullitt!
