My friends father had a 65 Rivera that was his fathers who bought it new. One day while he was at work we pulled it out of the garage and got it started and took it for a spin. The Buick Riviera of this period was one of the most beautiful big cars built anywhere. I loved it as a teen and I love it as an old guy. I love the proportions of the front, middle and rear, I love the vertical lights, I love the round gauges instead of strip. 55 years and it still looks good.

It's hard to comprehend how beautifully styled this car is 55+ years after it was designed. Hey Buick - you have the template for greatness, it is in your roots.
@mu99ins
@mu99ins 3 жыл бұрын
Very hard. If you scan down the page of replies, very little is said of the car. I remember back in '72 and one of the Vietnam veterans in my company re-upped to get a brand new Buick...forget, maybe a GS. I didn't think it was good looking. I didn't know anything about cars, but it was the styling i didn't like. And the Rivieras were all ugly to me, like they were designed for the trashy taste of Italian mobsters. But what I liked about them were listening to the people who liked them. By 1972, I was comparing body styles to the 50s and 60s, and saw them coming up short. With hindsight, I was missing a lot, but those were the days of zero information, as opposed to nowadays of the internet. My tastes have changed for the worse, and now my favorite cars are from the late 40s and early 50s. I think there is an emotional element to people's tastes in cars, and so it's usually mysterious and a head scratcher.

I really love jay's usual show format -- this is clearly either a homage to Jerry's show or he directly had someone editing this video that was trying really hard to copy the show format. I bet you realize that you misspoke about the engine. The '65 Rivera Gran Sport has a 425 c.i. dual quad nailhead V8 engine with 360 hp. The 401 was never produced by the factory with two 4 bbl carbs. I love your pandemic shows, they really show what a great fellow you truly are. Thanks for letting us into your world.
@peteshea8010
@peteshea8010 3 жыл бұрын
That's correct. This engine was called the "Super Wildcat" by Buick during the period. It was the same engine as the "Wildcat 465," but topped with 2 four barrel carbs. The "465" represented peak gross torque output and not engine horsepower or cubic inches. Similarly, the "Wildcat 445" was the 401 CID engine. It was rated at 325 Gross HP. All of this is still a source of confusion, even at high end auctions such as Barrett-Jackson. One of the on air personalities for the.Mecum auctions actually stated on air that the 401 Buick made "445 Horsepower" and replied in anger when I corrected him by e-mail.

My Great grandmother had a 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix... beautiful car, 400 under the hood but also classy to look at and drive. Had a 28 gallon fuel tank to fill behind the rear license plate that would flip down and rear windows that would roll down as well! Cool to see these classic cars with attachments to our memories!

In the early `70s, I had a `65 Grand Sport, black on black, straight-up Gangstermobile. Along with two friends, drove it from NJ down to Mardi Gras, then to Key West, up to Daytona, and back to Jersey, without a hiccup. GREAT car, I never should have let it go.

I was actually fortunate enough to drive and briefly own one of these '65 Rivieras. My father bought it from an old lady in the early 1970's and he drove it like an old lady, too, probably because it only got about 8 mpg. He gave it to me around 1981. I kept it for about a year and before giving it back to him. That Wildcat V-8 was a screamer, but not the best for reliability. Best memory was driving to AZ from CA and needing a jump start at a rest stop from a guy on a large bike. When I see stuff like this, I sorta wish I still had it. But at least I had one - for a while.

5:39 Showing MSRP back then is a common mistake. Considering $5,000 is equivalent to $41,350 today, it's not even worth twice as much. That's a terrible return on investment over 55+ years...and that's not to mention the investment it would take over those years to keep it in top shape.

The GS had the 425 with 2-4bbls. It put out 360hp/465ft-lbs of torque. I had the '65 regular Riv with the 401, which had a single Carter 500CFM and put out 325hp. The rust monster got her, unfortunately. The 2-4bbl configuration had two spreadbore four barrels. The linkage was set up so the smaller primaries of each carb opened first, then the larger secondaries kicked in if you stomped on it. You could literally see the gas gauge inch downward as you accelerated!
