Can You Guess What This Engine Is? If so, leave a comment and let's see if you get it right? I'll give you a hint, Robert Mitchum drove one in the best Car Movie of all time! and the revenuers couldn't catch him no matter how hard they tried......
With all the High Pocket, BIG Budget LS, Coyote, & Hemi Swaps on the old internet I thought, "what could I do different?" In true to the word, real world Budget Friendly engine swaps that haven't been done before...... well how about the ORGINAL THROW AWAY ENGINE of the 1960!
Honestly my dad gives me SoooOoooo much grief over playing with these little oddity engines that most people have totally forgotten about. And the answer is simple..... all the ones I've gotten my hands on are the "Get it out of my Shop" price..... aka FREE!
Now, these engines had a BIG reputation for not lasting long, and today's aftermarket support for them in NON-Existent so I'm going to pull out all the tricks I learned from people like @HotRodReverend and ‪@mctim64‬ to get this little 1965 Dodge Dart GT to the #nonamenationals this coming September.

No truer words can be said..... for sure Raycr! (and I know for sure, NASA had a lot of "hot rodders" on that team that got us to the moon, maybe that's why we didn't go back, they didn't let Shepard do a burn out in that Moon Buggy....lol)

YGTA! This is the kind of project that makes me think a C 4 transmission would be good, does it interchange? No but after a look there are conversion bell housings. I doubt you want to get spendy with this but I think this is great for the spirit of hot rodding! The slant six torsion bars are used for drag racing too.

Oh man.... when it comes to FoMoCo & Bell Housings..... yeah.... break out the wallet lolololol and as for the transmission.... she's going with the clutch. I have quite a few of those 3 speed transmissions and they are all really compact..... and the CR (close ratio) Kits for them are still Really Cheap compared to the Muncie and others. Other than that, Spot On Man and thanks a million man!

I had a 292 in a 60 Ford station wagon back in the day. It had the external oil lines to the top end valve train. It always ran good but I'm a Mopar guy so I sold the wagon and bought a 61 Dodge Polara 2 door hardtop. That Y block otta make the old Dart get up and sing!
@BareRoseGarage

Yeah in the final years of them dealers were scrambling to come up with fixes for that until they finally phased them out of production.... and the biggest fix that became popular was to just pull them and drop an FE or Windsor in there when they would die. The old Flatheads actually share a lot of the oiling design (and other things) but they lasted longer because the valve train on them is inside all that, riding directly on the cam, so it got oiled from there a whole lot better. That and..... well honestly.... the Flatheads only made about half the power as these.... lol. They didn't have the power to hurt themselves.

I had a 292 and a 54 pick up it fly . Blew the 3 speed all over the ground! Got right after that. 56 New Yorker 354 hemi & 1960 cast iron case Push button torqueflite. Zoom ooo ! I was 21 in 1981 . At that time was amazing that so many people didn't have a clue what the engine was. Pisses me off they call this new junk Hemis, my ass !

I don't know which Y block that is but my Brother in Law had a 57 Ford pickup with a 292 back in the late '70s. He found an aftermarket 4-barrel manifold for it. That truck was fun.

This one happens to be my 312 MEL, but its just the mock-up one so I don't scratch up the painted up one I'm actually putting in here. I've had it laying around for some time now, waiting for a "Light Car Build" to put it in, so I said "what the heck"..... lol Let's do a period correct "Coyote Swap" lolololol. In the coming video's I'll go into all that, because I have all three of them -239, 272 & 312 here in the shop. Along with where the nickname "Coyote" came from on these things.

292 or 312? Ain't nothing wrong with that, there's been worse than that done before but ain't nothing wrong with either one of those Y blocks, their both are strong running engines. Part of the reason why the revenuers couldn't catch Robert Mitchum in that movie. Good deal bud!

@@BareRoseGarage - Cool buddy, I like your way of thinking, although you might pee off some Mopar boys, hahaha, oh well, let them get their own channel and stuff, right? Anyways, heck guys have put smallblock Chevys in fox body mustangs, among other things, so what's the biggie, is what I say. The way I look at it, is your still putting a old Mopar back on the road, what's the difference what kind of drivetrain is in it. Haha, it's still gonna be COOL! Rock on 🤘 buddy!
@NathansMoparGarage
@NathansMoparGarage Жыл бұрын
Y is right. Is that the same width as a Mopar small block?
@BareRoseGarage
@BareRoseGarage Жыл бұрын
It's actually only about an inch wider than a 302 Ford and about 2 inches narrower than the LA (that's almost the same as a sbc). The advantage of this one though, is the deep skirted block (like an LS) that gave it the nickname, Y-Block and the "up flowing" exhaust.

I was wondering when this video was gonna drop. It's hard to believe that the Y block is that light!? Either that or the slant is that heavy...?
@BareRoseGarage
@BareRoseGarage Жыл бұрын
Hey there Oly, DANG good to see you man! That 312 Y-Block is actually about the same weight as that Slant, but because it doesn't hang over the front axle it's taking that weight and transferring it to the rear now. Now it's setting lower in the rear, but the front is sitting on the bump stops... lol.
@OlysGarage
@OlysGarage Жыл бұрын
@@BareRoseGarage one would have thought the Y-block would be much heavier. Interesting.....
@BareRoseGarage
@BareRoseGarage Жыл бұрын
@@OlysGarage One of these days I need to invest in a "hanger scale" for the cherry picker because when you look up these weights on the inner net... they are ALL OVER the place. That picker grunted pretty good getting that Slant out of there, about as much as it did lifting that 460. It would be cool as all get out to find out just how much these things actually do weigh. (and yup... on looking through Amazon right now trying to figure out what in the hell those scales are actually called so I can order one... lololololol)
@OlysGarage

@@BareRoseGarage oh man thats a great idea! Yeah because you never know the true weight..?! Is it with or without accessories, and which accessories, etc...
