1965 Dodge Dart GT Budget Build, The Original Coyote Swap & Why I Chose a Y-Block for this A-Body

In this episode I explain why I'm leaning toward this swap over the leaning tower of power (225 slant six) that was in this 1965 Dodge Dart GT.
With all the High Pocket, BIG Budget LS, Coyote, & Hemi Swaps on the old internet I thought, "what could I do different?" In true to the word, real world Budget Friendly engine swaps that haven't been done before...... well how about the ORGINAL THROW AWAY ENGINE of the 1960!
Honestly my dad gives me SoooOoooo much grief over playing with these little oddity engines that most people have totally forgotten about. And the answer is simple..... all the ones I've gotten my hands on are the "Get it out of my Shop" price..... aka FREE!
Now, these engines had a BIG reputation for not lasting long, and today's aftermarket support for them in NON-Existent so I'm going to pull out all the tricks I learned from people like @HotRodReverend and ‪@mctim64‬ to get this little 1965 Dodge Dart GT to the #nonamenationals this coming September.

Your videos are awesome and informative. They not only keep me glued to the screen listening for the next lesson of learning...I find myself watching the hole video no matter how long they are. Good video brother 👍....I'll be watching for the next one.

Thanks Stephen! It's like History in Reverse if you think about it..... the Dodge Bros owned a 3rd of FoMoCo in the beginning. If you have a Model T Ford, it's all Dodge running gear. This one.... it's just backwards to that.... lol.

Yep, my 2008 Chevy Silverado 2500 is a farm truck with 68,000 miles. Not a daily driver. Also, I talked with my 87-year-old Dad this morning and he agreed all his Y blocks had problems. He loved his flathead Ford V8s. I have a 57 Ford P.U. straight axle waiting for a project. I want to watch how you use that Dodge axle first.

Thanks Cmint! Yeah.... trucks have sure come a long way since the days gone by. Now they squat if you put a gallon of milk in the back, but back then you could load a full ton on a half ton pick up and still make it to where you wanted to go.... lol. The reason I'm looking at that Dodge Straight Axle, is because the steering box is in front of the Axle instead of Behind it like all the others did. In this car, because the front axle (and fenders) is so far back, I don't have the room to put the steering box in the rear. So it has to go to the front in order to keep the drag link parrell to the steering arm to eliminate the dreaded "Bump Steer".

Very badass. I didn't understand until I popped the hood on the T bird. My first thought was "Damn, Brother Bare is clever." Fits better than the 318 would have, with all the extra points for style. Plus, it could be argued that the y block is one of the best SOUNDING engines ever made.

Thanks Ary! and man I couldn't agree with you more on that. There is just something about the mechanical rumble of a Y-Block.

Awsome vid! Up until 6 years ago I had all fords. Now I have all Mopars, just due to circumstances that have occured in the last few years. LOL. I've always gravitated to trucks, growing up my father always had ford trucks, (and used them as trucks.) So I have done the same. 🤣 It's great watching you plan and try to see if you can put things together that were never meant to be together, and make it work. This brings back memories of what was commonly done when I was a kid. Keep up the good work, and thanks for sharing your knowledge! 😁👍

ooOOoooo the MEL's I'd love to find one of them as well man! That's what the song "Hot Rod Lincoln" was written about.... lol.
@jdvintageauto2958
@jdvintageauto2958 Жыл бұрын
@@BareRoseGarage The 368 is more of a vertical port Y block. Not sure if anything is interchangeable. The MEL blocks weren't available until 1958 and look more like an FE except the combustion chamber is cut in the deck and piston instead of the head. Like a 348/409 or the Audi 2.0 they put in Mail jeeps and the Porsche 924.

@@BareRoseGarage the 430 MEL was a torque monster, factory rated at 490 lb.ft. I had to do a valve job on a 1960 Lincoln convertible. I was impressed with the umph factor.

Free HX Holset or 165 dollar Turbo Y block, my recommendation. Exhaust manifolds of early 272s were bat sheet crazy....Budget Blown F code Bait 🪤. As you said, Ford's problem....it's the inability to do cam swaps in them without a full tear down, and the oiling system not being as good as even an early non Fuel filtered 265 SBC. So you couldn't lean on em like the Hot One or Windsor built Mopar Small blocks.

I don’t know much about the y block but I remember that they had cam bearing issues cause of the wrong oil being used. Do you have a link your video on them ?
@BareRoseGarage
@BareRoseGarage Жыл бұрын
It's kind of that.... but the issue with them is really because it's a non-pressurized oiling system. They use the "pump and trickle" method that was closer to the old Flathead in design. I have another video coming on that, it's just stuck in my old Computer that finally died a horrible death..... lol.

hey man your videos are real cool. im hopefully getting a 65 dart also, im trading my 1969 tbird for her. the 65 dart has a slant 6 but i wanna swap it out, i was thinking about 340 but it was too expensive. Im leaning to get a 350 or some sorta Chevy small block to put in. i also heard them rear ends aren't very strong so i wanted to swap out the rear end and suspension. trying todo something different also i want this to be not only cheap but its own kinda thing man. any suggestions for swapping a small block chevy or any models of the small block i should use??
