In this episode I try to re-cap on how I was able to pull the little Dual Cable Torqueflite 904 Automatic Transmission from this 1965 Dodge Dart GT. One cable operates the gear selector and the other operates the "Park" lever to put the transmission in "Park" mode. The Shift Cable isn't too bad to remove from the transmission, but the Park Cable is a NIGHT-Mare in the making. To get around all of this I left them all intact to keep them in adjustment and to prevent any damage on the rubber seals, gaskets, and spring tension.
This is an issue that you come across on many occasions but with a little patience you can do it this way without damaging any those rare, and overpriced pieces and parts you might need later, saving you time and money in the end that can be used to keep your Hot Rod or Classic Mopar on the road where it wants to be. And on a side note...... even if I don't use any of these rare and expensive OEM parts.... there are many people out there that are looking for these parts to restore their vehicles, and they are either willing to buy these or trade me stuff that I need to complete my projects. The more you save, the more resources you have at your disposal to get your project on the road where it wants to be...... and your wallet happy with the progress you're making.
Hope that helps some of you out there, and with a little luck this little 1965 Dodge Dart will make it to the #nonamenationals this September with the rest of the Mopar crew. In it's own..... NoCar kind of way.

I hear ya Matt my '63 440 had it as well, but sadly I had to sell that one to pay for the electricity to the shop (had a pole set and meter during COVID, and they bounced the bid - sold the car to settle the difference).

Awesome video and explanation of how those work! I scrapped several of those back in the day, I only like the newer one's with the rear slip yoke. Someone may be able to use it for a 100 percent restoration but it will only fit a slant six.

Man I hear ya, because I did as well. These things where "junk" back in the day. People now days think of modern automatics..... but these are NOTHING like the stuff from the 70's on up. We called these "Slush Boxes" for a reason... lol.

Very informative video there my brother! I've always had a love for the 904 (having one myself) and I learned a few things on this one. Great job, and thanks!

Thanks CulturedRedNeck! I can clearly see why people like them! That C6 Ford in the background..... that takes two guys to pick up and move around (dry), this thing... you can one hand it, full of fluid.... lol.

That transmission only fits 65 and older slant 6 engines. The torque convertor snout that fits in the back of the crankshaft is smaller. Snout wont go in. You can put a 64-65 273 trans in it for the shifter cables to work. To put a later engine with the early trans you need to make a spacer for the snout. Piece of turned pipe.

Thanks Kras and thanks for stopping in man! yeah, it's kind of a one off. A friend off the family has a lathe and he said he could turn me one down, but I think I'm going to go a completely different route on this build.... lol.

Good old vintage technology, if are going to stay with the 6 I would upgrade to the newer style 904.

I think he wants to.put a V8 in it. Personally, I would keep the 6, and put a 5 or 6 speed manual in it just for fun.

I hear ya Nathans..... and it did cross my mind indeed. The 318 I have is an option that's still on the table, but I don't have a tranny for it (it's in a granny 4 in a 2ton truck). If I go with a standard U-Joint newer 904, I have to figure out how to take that angle out of it all, and straighten it back up.... or use the "Ball & Trunion" style that's on this older one... but they are pretty weak for even a 318. Probably a big reason that they straightened that angle out in '66. I see why a lot of guys said, "Oooo an Early A-Body, good luck with that" lolololol.

If it was a '66+ that would definitely be something to think about. That's when they corrected that whacko engine to pinion angle and dropped the Ball & Trunnion u-joint. I"ll bet you could get one heck of a good "Mileage Rod" out of that combo..... a classic Mopar that gets 30 to 40mpg.... hmmmmm. You might be onto something there man.

@@BareRoseGarage If you where closer I would give you a core. I also have drive shafts with the correct slip joint but may they need to be shortened.
