Thanks for all the points of difference in the LA Magnum comparison and what to watch out for if I go junk yard dogging and pickup a magnum for my 70 Challenger. I have been running LA 318 for years with a Proform crosswind dual bolt pattern intake. I like the stud mounted rocker arms like sb chevy’s and there is the roller cam in the Magnum as well. The timing cover info was great, and the mechanical vs electric fuel pump too. Thanks for a great video.

Hey man great video! I have an 86 Ramcharger and the original la 360 is just tired. I've been on the fence with a bunch of swaps like hemi or cummins. This magnum swap just makes sense. I think I may be able to pull this off.

Nice Video and good info! I have a 5.9 magnum in a '89 B250 van, and I'm going to be putting a 5.9 magnum in a '80 truck. 318 mounts would work for the magnums or 360 LA if you use spacers to fill in the gap on the drivers side, and I've used nuts to fill the gap .. LOL. Another option for a cam would be a roller from a LA that has the long snout, and get it reground so you can use a mechanical fuel pump. I'm using a LA roller in the van magnum and one from Oregon Regrinders for the one going into the '80 truck.

Man I have been waiting for this video my friend. Thank you for sharing your experience and builds. Have you always been a Mopar or no car guy? I’ve been a Mopar fan from day one. All my friends were Chevy and Ford guys. I don’t like being like everyone else. I like the challenge of not putting an LS in everything because it’s easy. No originality there. Same as everybody else.

Thanks! Also, I saw your messages about the test light on the start up live feed. It broke that day so that’s why I was using the Power Probe.

@@TheGasTap I guessed so. The old test light trick from B+ to coil ground and crank is good on GM and Chrysler. You have Big Red and I have Gandolf the gray. 1985 d150

you forgot about the Indy 3M-I4 and Mopar M1 single plane intake for the magnum i have ran both on my 408 stroker magnum and they work great also the both have provisions for MPFI rails sweet turbo build

Difference between the heads getting oil from the magnum to the la, one get oil through the pushrods the other gets it from a port in the head

There are some very early magnums that can use LA heads but are rare. I dont remember what vehicles they came in (truck or van) but I did read up on that before

Get a stock late 70’s distributor(can’t remember the part number off the top of my head) a MSD 6al and an accel super stock coil (40825). Add in a 4secondsflat.com distributor limiter if you are adding a camshaft. Don’t use vacuum advance either.

They don’t make a performer intake for the magnum engine.

I have heard also to use what ever gasket that matches the valve covers being used. Magnum valve covers use magnum gaskets, LA valve covers use LA gaskets.

i have a 360 LA and a 727, im swaping the LA 360 for a magnum 360, the magnum flexplate is weighted and the tourqe converter is also has a single weight on it do i need to remove it ???

Thanks for the info but I do have one small question. I am thinking about putting a magnum in my 91 ram with ac. If I purchase the camshaft spacer and run the mechanical fuel pump, la timing cover and accessories including the la style air conditioning, can I use the cheaper Chinese intake or do I need to use the expensive intake. Thanks.

The Chinese manifold is more similar in o the LA intake. It should work fine.

If I put a magnum in my truck using the v belt system can I run my stock a/c compressor with the crosswind intake or will I be modifying brackets for the compressor as the thermostat housing is in the center

The crosswind should look extremely close to your stock manifold and fit like factory setup.

Nice vehicles dude my question is I have a 1989 dodge truck with a 3.9 v6 fuel injected engine but I would like to put a 2003 360 magnum from a r/t Durango and I want to put a carburetor on it and get rid of the fuel injection so what wiring issues ‘‘em I going to have and do I just have to put a fuel regulator on it to control my fuel pressure

Pressure regulator should be fine. You need to check the difference in the alternator output. You may need to upgrade the wiring. You will need a some kind of capacitive discharge ignition. (MSD etc ) for the distributor

Did you have to modify the engine mounts in the valiant? I have a 72 dart I been thinking of getting a used 318 out of a 2000 Dakota and use the wiring harness ecm. The dart is an original 318 car

Awesome truck! I'm building my first high school hot rod, 80 d150 short box, mild built 360 (400hp to flywheel) 727 automatic. Can you suggest a stall converter size and rear gears? Thanks!

I run 3.55 gear in all three of my vehicles. As far as converter, you need to pic out your cam, gears and tire size. Also new to know the weight of the vehicle. Then call a converter company you like and they will use all that info plus more to get you the right converter.

Bolts right up. The external balance is different so get the right flex plate.

Question my man... On Big Red, I see an electric cooling fan on the radiator. What fan and controller did you end up using and have you had any cooling issues with them?

Cheepo eBay 16” fan hooked to key on power so it always runs. I haven’t had any issues with it getting hot.

Hey you really seem to know your stuff I am playing with the idea of changing my LA 318 to a magnum 318 in my 83 Chrysler Córdoba just because I want EFI and I was wondering how different is the wiring between the two and what year would be the best magnum to swap with any help would be great thanks

The Magnum EFI is easy to swap. What year all depends on if you want OBD1 or OBD2. I like the idea of an Edelbrock Air Gap intake and a Sniper EFI. More power and still easy to do.

Im in the process of swapping a magnum into my 78 aspen. I'm wanting to use as much LA parts of the old LA motor as I can. Will the the LA front pulley work or will i have to find an older magnum pulley?

LA pulley will work but you have to use a magnum balancer.

Advancing the cam will just change the operating range.

Going to swap la to magnum will stock magnum oil pan clear cross bar. I’ve been told I need to use my la oil pan and sump but I don’t see why. Thanks good videos btw!

What kind of vehicle are you swapping it into? If it's a truck, then use the truck magnum pan.

I've got an 89 ramcharger with a very tired 318. I'm looking at swapping in a 360 magnum engine and had a few questions. 1.) Will there be a significant power gain? 2.) Is there any specific year magnum engine to stay away from?

All the magnum engines are that same. The only thing different you will find is the early magnum 360 had a weighted torque converter and was later changed to a weighted flex plate, also the early model had a bolt on crank pulley, later models have the crank pulley joined to the balancer. I compared a stock 360 magnum to the 300 hp 360 create engine. everything seems the same. I'd est a 360 magnum with a carburetor makes close to 300 hp while an old stock 318 LA makes 175ish.

I getting ready to do a 5.9 mag swap in a 1973 Plymouth satellite factory ac, if I go with the v-belt and the cheaper intake manifold, will the factory ac pump still bolt up or be in the way of anything

Quick Question. You said with the Chinese intakes that you cannot have the AC. Does that also include the Dorman AC Bracket you have on Big Red?

The a/c delete was put on bc the a/c compressor wouldn’t fit when I had the Proform intake on Big Red. So, yes, the A/C delete pulley works on both.

I don’t have any experience with them but there will be a power loss when using any overdrive transmission.

If a person built a hot 5.9 Magnum for the strip it might need an approved flex plate. Is there such a piece on the market? You mentioned B&M quit making their balanced 5.9 magnum flex plate. Same for the dampener. Are there aftermarket approved pieces for racing?

Is it difficult to take out 1987 w150 power ram 318 LA engine assembly and put in 5.2 magnum engine with EFi and entire wiring harness ? 727 transmission.

Nah. You’ll probably need a tuner to tell the computer that the transmission is changed.

I’ve seen plenty of ppl use the stock wiring and computer when doing a magnum into an older vehicle. You should be fine.

You dont have to use an a/c delete pulley. I dont get why so many ppl think you do. Just get a belt for a 2nd gen ram that didnt have a/c option. Its shorter and you save $50. I have a 93 dakota and running 318 without an ac delete pulley. I think i bought a belt for a 96 or 98 ram 1500 with no a/c.

Have you seen the Hughes engines Intake manifold? You can use your stock ECU and not spend money on Hollley EFI.

@@TheGasTap hello. The reason I'm going with the holley is I live in Northern Alberta. Sending the ecm out to get programmed is or can be a process. We only get mail in and out usually once a week so sending it state side sucks. I have that intake already just going to fill the injector holes I was thinking. Just wanted to know if that other intake would work. Thanks again for the info. Your videos rock.

Magnum heads are the same for the 318 and 360. LA heads will not work.

Hello. Could I please have your help? I have a 1983 Ramcharger 4x4 318 with a 4 barrel Sniper installed. Jess has a part number 059 HP73 from ATK Engines. It states that this motor will fit 1981, 1982 and 1984 leaving the 1983 out. Any ideas? I have Air conditioning. The Jegs guy states that the engine is interchangeable and power steering, alternator, headers and ac will all hook up from the 318 to the 360 magnum. Can you help me with the easiest way to put this 360 long block in from Jegs? Running AC on VBelt.

You just use the timing cover and everything off the front of the 318. You need an externally balanced 360 flex plate and balancer.

I’m pretty sure but not 💯. It looks like the La intake more than a magnum intake. It’s like they made it for an La then drilled for the magnum bolt holes.

What alternator are you using? The magnum alternator puts out more amps than the old 87 ram alternator and will fry wires. You’ll need an external voltage regulator

@@TheGasTap Thanks for the tip. I looked at those but ended up with a 06-up pt cruiser fan for $40. It includes the hi and lo speed relays mounted on the fan. I looked up the schematic and found it uses a 40amp breaker so it should blow really well. I'll use the low speed relay with a thermal switch and the high speed relay control to a toggle back up.

@@TheGasTap I'm using LA timing cover and LA accessories but the alternator bracket doesn't seem to fit due to the bolt boss sticking out about a half inch on the cylinder head...

I’ve never run into that issue. I have used the chrome aftermarket alternator brackets with no problems.

My 360 is getting old I did the plenum fix it leaks oil rear main and timing chain cover.runs pretty strong for almost 200k turning 35 and dana 60 axles but my question is...buy a rebuilt 360 5.9 or find a 8 liter v10 they offered in the gen 2 trucks I have no ram friends come from chevy gear head family and will the computer work ? We have no emissions in north idaho gutted my cat when the plenum fouled it and went with flow mastercv40 series .how do you set timing without a fancy computer on these magnums

It’s easy. Depending on what you use the truck for, I would try to fix the fuel injection but that’s just me.

All 360 pans will work with all years to my knowledge.

360's only fit 360's. The radius is different on the rear, or front I forgot the end. 360's never came in 67's. Don't forget the oil pump pickup has to match the pan.

If you can, use magnum exhaust manifold with magnum heads. While the la manifold will bolt on, the center ports are miss matched and they are generally more restrictive than magnum manifolds.

If you can find 1992 through 1993 magnum manifolds, run them. The ports are 2.25 inches.

5.9L Magnum flex plate won't bolt up to 5.2L Magnum torque converter,at least it won't bolt up to a 42re/44re torque converter. 5.9L Magnum has 4 bolt torque converter for the 45re transmission. Can't use a 5.2L Magnum Flex plate on a 5.9L Magnum because the 5.2L is internally balanced and has no balancing weights on it. The 5.9L Magnum is externally balanced and it does have balancing weights on it. Engine will be out of balance if Flex plates are swapped and cause a nasty vibration.

I think unfortunately the magnum aftermarket is shrinking and getting replaced by the gen3 hemi swap market. I have a low compression 318 mag in my 98 van and when I researched the cost of a good 360 mag upgrade or 5.7 hemi swap, it was not much more for the hemi. Granted, if I can find a good used lower mile mag and luck out on heads it would be strait forward but finding the good parts is increasingly difficult.

Agreed. It’s sad. The Hemi has an oil issue with the cam and they eat cams. I like my Magnums.

i bought a 5.2 magnum for 50 bucks. cant get a new hemi for anything under 1500 bucks where i live, and most of them ate valves and cams.

@@frigglebiscuit7484 Very true. I think though that you'd want a new camshaft and valve train anyways but the costs add up. A local drag racer bought several 5.7s at the junk yard and pieced them together (Says he blew the first and had to make a second) and put it into his Duster. I should post a video of it running. The thing is wicked.
