While replacing the tail panel, I decided to finish the quarter panel first. here's how I did it.

Good job Jo. I did almost the same here on the quarter. I bought the hole quarter panel instead of a patch panel. I cut mine different that you did and used more of the quarter panel and also had a rust hole in the front side to repair as well, I also bought the outer wheel house for my patches as well. I'm not a good metal fab guy to make these pieces. One thing i did was to use a spot welder when i could to weld the piece's when acceptable. When i did the fitting of the quarter panel but well i found many pin holes in my butt weld after grinding down the butt weld. Shining a bright light on the butt weld showed me the holes and marked and re welding did the trick then i used fiberglass bondo over the butt weld. Love your explanation of what your doing and keep up the good work.

I watched Jo Daddy's Garage entire Mystique series, and would like to make a few comments. I'm so impressed with this gentleman and his video that I had to make a few comments. The Tail Light Panel that he's using that was produced utilizing the original Ford tooling is made by Scott Drake. You really have to did for it to find the part number! After watching this video, I really had to search for a panel and take chances that more expensive meant better fit! Goodmark makes two panels, and the first panel I purchased was their more expensive panel that is thicker. It did not fit! t was so far off, that it would have never looked right! Most of the time I'll go with Dynacorn sheet metal. I've used their radiator core support, front side aprons, and have really good luck with their parts! Dynacorn was out of the tail light panel at their Camarillo warehouse, so after some searching, I found their panel at Mustangs Unlimited in Georgia, and purchased this Dynacorn Panel from them. It does not fit either! Both of these panels have the problem of not fitting over the corner sections that this gentleman pointed out, and the shape at the bottom does NOT match the end pieces or shape of the quarter panels! This guy put a lot of work into the Mystique Project and really did a great job of showing us how he did it! Their is no ridiculous music blasting in the background, and he is calm and to the point of telling us how to do the things he accomplished on this project! I ordered the Scott Drake original tooling tail light panel and am waiting for it's arrival. I'd like to know what manufacturer's quarter panel skin he's used for the patch panel. This guy is fantastic, I only wish he mentioned the part numbers he used (That fit)! Perhaps it's out of being professional not to bad mouth someone's parts, or maybe youtube frowns on mentioning the bad and the good products! The other comment that I want to make, is that when he replaced the radiator core support, I couldn't figure out why he separated the new core support from the front cross member it came with. I figured that since it's a whole unit, why not cut the front cross member out and install the whole thing! So naturally, I cut the entire cross member out of my car and installed a Dynacorn core support complete with the cross member in it's place! What a big Friggin mistake! If your cross member is still straight and in good shape, do exactly what he's done! I can't even begin to tell you the amount of work required to get the cross member out, and get everything lined up for the absolutely massive amount of welding that is required to put everything back together!! It took days of work that weren't necessary and was a nightmare! Anyway! Jo Daddy's Garage, you have my respect and please continue making videos! My 1965 "A" Code Coupe is really turning out fantastic, and very much due to your great job of sharing your experience!

Great progress Joe. Just wanted to say thanks for these vids. We cut the quarter off of my friends 65 the other day and these videos come in very handy. Our wheel house needs the same patch and we have some rust in the inner structure at the deck filler where the convertible top attaches to. We also had some major collision damage repair to the b pillar to fix. Merry Christmas.

Fantastic work and great insight on the panel replacement. I believe (could be wrong) you could make the inner wheel well piece in one shot if you had a shrinker/stretcher set. Just looking at it, seems like it could be done... But what you did... EXACTLY how it has to be done. Making it work no matter what the tools are. Have a great Christmas brother.

Hey Jo Daddy,does the outer wheel house and the fender just get spot welded on the final , no seam sealer on that ? thanks
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. You could add some sealer afterward to the edge, and/or spray some on the inside from the trunk and quarter window opening.

Hi Barry I've been watching you and took a lesson on replacing a used quarter panel there's no full panel available for my 73 gran torino sport and the one I found needed a lot of work . l test fitted on so much I nic named it yoyo I'm doing old school on the panel with lead do you have any idea if I need to put some kind of glaze over or filler to finsh it off.
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 8 жыл бұрын
+Leonard Gilbreath As far as anything I've done, I use filler on top of lead, or to blend it into the panel.
@JoDaddysGarage

Depends on what's there. I haven't had any issues using either, but I also heavily score/scuff any remaining lead.

How big are the holes that you're drilling in these panels that you're going to weld through? !/4", 3/16?
@JoDaddysGarage

Typically about 5/16". It can depend on the location and if there is enough edge distance.

I have a quick question. Who's quarter panel did you use for the patch panel? I'd like to buy one to do the same patch as you did in this video. The reason it's important for me to know what works is the following: I'm on my 3rd tail light panel, The Goodmark did not fit (Summit Racing took it back, no problem, refunded my money). I bought a Dynacorn Tail Light Panel from Mustangs Unlimited, and to my surprise the Dynacorn Tail Light Panel did not fit (Bought from Mustangs Unlimited because they were the only place I could find it in stock) and they have no return policy, I'm eating $98 on a panel because UPS says will cost me $101 to send back!!). I'm ordering the Scott Drake original tooling tail light panel from Summit after I post this. I think it's important to include what manufacturer's part fit and who's don't. I figure that I took one for the team on the Dynacorn Tail Light Panel and buying from Mustangs Unlimited. I used Dynacorn Radiator Core Support and Front Passenger Side Apron and they fit flawlessly! I used the Dynacorn full rear Quarters on my 1970 GT500 Convertible as well as cowl panel, "A" Pillars, and Tail Light Panel, and they were spot one! That's why the Dynacorn tail light panel for 65-66 not working surprises me! I'm very surprised that Mustangs Unlimited doesn't help with the return shipping. This does affect my decision making on buying future parts from them. Summit Racing doesn't handle Dynacorn, but does sell all of the Scott Drake stuff, as well as Goodmark and all the others! The Free Shipping, No Tax in California drives me to call them first(On Orders over $99.00)! My normal 2nd choice is CJPony.

The patches are no good. I bought a "skin" as they are the correct shape and fit better. I cut out what I needed from that part #527846. The original tooling tail panel is part F1657. Both from Mustangs Unlimited.
