This is a very cool vintage chainsaw. I almost missed out on it, and I'm kicking myself. This saw was a total mess and sat on Craigslist for quite some time, no takers. I finally ran up to get it just before it was heading to the dump, and I'm glad I did. It cleaned up nice. It's in a lot better shape than I thought it would be based on the pictures that were posted.
A very brief history of vintage Remington Chainsaws. The Remington Arms Company acquired Mall Tool Co. in 1956. Mall Tool Co. manufactured chainsaws and many other types of power tools. Remington renamed the company Remington Power Tool Division and continued to manufacture many power tools, including chainsaws. Their chainsaws sold well, but Remington was in dire straits financially in 1969. The Remington power tools division was sold off in parts and production of the Remington chainsaw came to an end in the mid 1970's. New Remington chainsaws are being sold today as part of the MTD Product line of tools and power equipment.
I hope you enjoy the overview of the PL4. I plan on getting it running and in the wood soon. Thanks for watching!

Very impressive saw! You're accumulating quite the collection. Would be great to see a restoration video or at least before/after showing the condition when you first got these saws.

Thanks! I have 30+ saws in my collection, hard to believe. That's a good idea. I may start showing a before and after clip. They're pretty beat up when I get them.

The old Remington cleaned up, nice. I always considered the greasy grime a protective coating. The paint is usually pretty nice after you clean them up. not faded.

It did, I was surprised. You know, I'm beginning to think you may be right. The greasier they are, the more they're protected from the elements.

Remington saws are a nice addition to ones collection. The saws were originally MALL branded, and after purchased by Remington they were sold as Remington-Mall, and the MALL name was eventually phased out. Interesting enough roller nose bars were patented by Remington. I have a PL-4 also, but it has an unusual feature, it has a roundtuit on it, which means I will get( around to it )someday. Another good video!

Thanks! I was pleasantly surprised at the condition and quality of the saw once cleaned up. I did read up briefly on Mall/Remington chainsaw history but was unaware that the roller nose bars were patented by Remington. Now that you mention it, I do see that the patent is stamped on the bar. Thanks for pointing that out. The roundtuit feature, ha ha, I like that! I have that feature on a lot of my saws as well, I just didn't know it. Thanks again for pointing that out, ha ha!

Remington made some excellent saws over the years but never had a real large presence in the market. Roundtoits are spread all over my shop too !@@EightWheelsRollin

The Lombard Comango was also a close copy of the XL-12/SXL, also several Pioneer were close enough to use the piston and cylinders

Good score! I also have several "copied" Homelite xl 12 saws. I have a 261 poland. a couple lombards. a 1200 pioneer. a 3.7 craftsman and a JM5753 Remington. Its been stated that the XL 12 was the most copied chainsaw ever?

The XL-12 is a solid saw. I can see why others copied it.
