This is video is part 13 in a restoration series about a 1966 Mustang Convertible named Vin. In this episode I begin to test fit the doors and fenders in order to accurately locate the firewall, cowl and fender aprons.

I bought my 66 when i was 15. I turn 61 this year. Plan on semi-retiring next year. My plan has always been to tackle getting my 66 done after I retire when i can dedicate more attention to it. Hat's off to you doing this while managing life's busy schedule. I hope your series continues and you get your car done to your satisfaction.

Thanks. Good luck on your car too. I'm neck deep with my buddy on his 66 VW Beetle, but I'll get back to the mustang sometime soon.

It's going to be very valuable to see how you fix the rear quarter to door gap. There are lots of banged up 1st gen Mustang restorations yet to go in the world, and many in very rough shape! As for the chit-chat, you are absolutely right about feeling like you might have disappointed your viewers by the ratio of talk to action. We are here for the knowledge, and are glad you are back. The work really is all that matters! And these videos are not time-sensitive, quite the opposite: they are a valuable record for future people to watch and use as a resource. If you do feel the need to give long pre-ambles etc, put chapter markers on the video timeline. This will also be of value to viewers after you and I are long gone. Cheers and good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. I like your perspective that we are creating a trove of historical knowledge. My next video is less talking and more demonstration. Thanks for watching.

I am doing a 66 also. I had to completely rebuild,the,front of the car. A new firewall, upper and lower vowel,new dash, a pullers, front frame rails, and fender sides. I used the center line of the car as a reference and mounted a one piece export brace to help position the shock towers relative to the center of the cowl. . Other than that I used measurements from another 66 to set the core support relative to the cowl, mount the frame rails etc. New floor supports and floor pans. The export brace set the shock towers, firewall, cowl and dash correctly to each other. Starting to mock up the fenders and hood and everything looks ok so far

Wow. Big project! I'm glad its looking good so far. As I document this, please feel free to share advice along the way. I'm 80% of the way through fitting the driver fender and filming that video. It's coming along, but the fender needs some hammer/dolly work and probably some welding work too.

It is a big project I never would have attempted it if I had not watched Jo Daddy build the 65 convertible. The only input I have after watching your video is concern that your firewall might be too high where it meets the front of the cowl. I think you probably had to modify it for use in a convertible. Jo Daddy had to for his convertible. Just a guess
@3rdstallgarage2 жыл бұрын
@@bustedknucklegarage-tommy1507 yes, Jo Daddy is so good at it. I’ll need to pay attention to the height of the firewall. I tried to model installation of it from his videos.

I just stumbled onto your videos yesterday and have gotten this far. I can totally relate. I have a 67 coupe that I’m converting to fastback. I have never built a car before. The car was in worse shape than what I thought at first. Found out after I started tearing into it I had to replace the firewall and cowl. Because of my inexperience I’m scared I’m going to make mistakes to. I do get to a point that it gets overwhelming and I’ll take a break but when I go back to it I’ll look at something else and work myself back into what I was originally doing. I’m only a little over a year into this build. So I have at least 5-8 years to go since I don’t get the time I would like to spend on it. Thank you for the videos and keep on you will get it done one day. You will(like me)make mistakes along the way but that’s how we are learning to do it!

As you know I am into year 2 on mine and I guestimate I still need 3 months to complete. I have been retired for a solid year so for the first year work and honey-do list got in the way. Like yourself the summer is very short up here so in the summer I prefer to enjoy the weather rather than sweating in the garage. 3 -4 years to restore one of these cars when it is not a priority make sense so you are probably on track. Motivation is tougher, I find that unless I can get a solid 3 or 4 hours per session it is almost not worth it as you just get going and times up. The car is looking good and your plan is solid , all the best and I look forward to your next posts. As you align the doors, I suggest you apply the seals with tape to understand how much space you need between the door and both A and B pillars

X2 on the seals. Too close and you won't Be able to close the door
@3rdstallgarage2 жыл бұрын
Good thought on the seals. I don't have them yet...I don't think. There's lots of boxes upstairs above the shop. I should dig through them. Otherwise I should probably order them.

@@3rdstallgarage My door fitment was a nightmare as I aligned the rear quarter to the door without the seal and now the seal is changing how the door fits and nothing I can do about quarters.

I think time away to do other endeavors is healthy. As long as you've got the space for it to sit awhile This is supposed to be your fun hobby remember. My issue (improving a mostly functioning classic car) is overestimating what I can do and buying too much at a time to "save" on shipping. Glad you're back at it. The plan of moving rear forward makes sense and at some point getting it the best you can assuming that even the best reproduction parts often need mods to work.
@3rdstallgarage2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dale! Now that I'm getting going again, the fun is building. I have to admit that I began to wonder if I ever wanted to get started on it again. I think taking the first step after 8 months off was the first big hurdle. The second hurdle was keeping at that first step until I saw progress. Then emotionally the project was off and running again. I'm excited to work on that 66 beetle with you!!

Im about to mock up my 66 and get my panels where they need to be and any work done before bodywork and paint. I've read and I don't know how true it is but have the full weight of the doors before aligning. Meaning the windows, roller mechanisms etc. It makes sense to me because that adds a decent amount of weight to the door and could change how it lines up after you put those items in. Also the bottom gap of the door along the rocker is larger than the gaps along the sides. That's just how it was from the factory. Why I don't know but it's always what I've seen.
@3rdstallgarage2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like good advice. Thanks for the suggestions.

From the videos I have watched, your top door gap is not an uncommon problem. Most of them do a relief cut and move the top of the fender forward. This is seems to be the most common thing to do. Another method is the weld down the edge of the door building up. Good luck with your choice.
@3rdstallgarage2 жыл бұрын
Are you referring to the gap between my door and the rear quarter or the gap between my door and front fender? I think I have the gap between my door and front fender pretty decent, but I'm a little uncertain about the top of the gap between my door and rear quarter.
@losttwo12 жыл бұрын
@@3rdstallgarage I should have said, Option 1 Do a relief cut down the B Pillar about a 1/8" - 1/4" back, then align it with the door. Patch/weld the relief cut closed. Second option Build up the rear edge of the door with several passes of weld, to fill the gap. I like option 1 better as your door will still have a nice clean straight edge. I hope that makes more sense.

@@losttwo1 that’s very helpful and exactly what I’ve been thinking. Thanks for clarifying.

Doug, Did you get the door seals mounted in the 66 mustang? Just wondering, if so, how it went? I have a problem with mine. The door fits fine without the seals. But with the seals installed it's hard to close. Stick out at the rear lower end.
